Chapter 24 - The Blood Wave Begins

Midnight arrived with a deafening thunderclap as the red sky tore open across the northern horizon.

"Here they come... full swarm inbound from the northern valley!" the shield guardian shouted, bracing her stance against the reinforced parapet.

"Maintain your firing discipline and wait for the kill zone!"

Massive swarms of winged gargoyles, horned hellhounds, and skeletal bone warriors surged through the dimensional rift in a terrifying horde.

More than two thousand monstrous beasts flooded across the shattered boulevard, their glowing eyes fixed on the illuminated school walls.

"Hold your fire until the lead packs cross the twenty-yard marker," the First Player commanded, his voice cutting through the rising wind like a whip.

"Make every single bullet count!"

"The hellhounds are leading the charge across the open grass," the frost mage reported, tracking the front pack with her glowing staff.

"They are moving at forty miles per hour!"

"Archers, rifle squads... open fire!" Nox yelled, sweeping his arm toward the charging vanguard.

"Sweep the outer approach lanes!"

A concentrated volley of twenty automatic rifles and mana-infused arrows ripped into the charging vanguard of the monster army.

The lead hellhounds were shredded by concentrated lead and radiant energy, their dark blood staining the frozen outer trench.

"They are trying to leap over the spiked ditch!" Vasa called out, slamming the butt of her focus staff against the stone walkway.

"Frostbite Blizzard... freeze the approach!"

A massive tempest of swirling ice crystals engulfed the front ranks, flash-freezing dozens of charging beasts into brittle statues.

The monsters behind them tripped over the frozen obstacles, piling up into dense clusters in the center of the killing field.

"Emilia, trigger the root traps right now!" Yeda yelled, pointing her cutter toward the tangled earth below the ramparts.

"Drag them down!"

"Predatory Bloom... feast on their blood!" the botanical specialist cried, extending both glowing hands over the parapet.

Thick, thorny vines erupted from the soil, wrapping around the limbs of the trapped bone warriors and pulling them beneath the ground.

The garden soil absorbed the monstrous vital energy, blooming with vibrant green mana that pulsed beneath the defensive line.

"Our left barricade is taking intense pressure from the second wave of bone warriors!" Kendra shouted, bracing her stone shield against a furious rush of skeletal beasts.

"They are trying to climb over the fallen carcasses to breach the gateway!"

"Hold that gate, Kendra!" the First Player called down from the upper walkway.

"I am dropping support on your position right now!"

The youth leaned over the parapet and unleashed two rapid void arcs into the cluster below, bisecting five skeletal warriors in a shower of splintered bone.

"The gate holds firm, Commander!" the shield guardian roared back, bashing a charging hellhound with the rim of her stone slab.

"Not a single beast steps past this threshold while I am breathing!"

"Watch the right flank by the sports sheds!" an archer called out from the eastern tower.

"A pack of horned prowlers is trying to scale the perimeter fence!"

"Vasa, drop a frost wall along that perimeter line!" Nox commanded, tracking the secondary cluster with his tactical display.

"Do not let them gain a foothold on our storage buildings!"

"Freezing the fence line now!" the frost mage shouted, thrusting her staff toward the eastern sheds as a wall of jagged ice erupted along the chain links.

The climbing beasts shrieked in agony as the sudden frost shattered their claws, sending them crashing into the spiked moat below.

High above the ramparts, a flock of fifty winged gargoyles dove toward the central courtyard, their stone talons poised to slaughter the defenders.

"Yeda, take the left flank of the flock with me!" he shouted, vaulting off the clocktower catwalk with `[Shadow Stride]`.

"Shatter their wings before they reach the courtyard!"

"I have the lead flyers dialed in!" the striker called out, leaping alongside him with her tungsten cutter humming with frost mana.

She spun through the air in a breathtaking aerial arc, severing the wing membranes of three diving gargoyles in a single pass.

The crippled beasts shrieked as they plummeted into the spiked moat below, impaling themselves on the frozen lances.

The First Player met the center of the flock in mid-air, cloaking his weapon in absolute spatial severance.

"Void Cleave... scatter the sky!"

A massive crescent wave of pure spatial energy sliced through the flock, bifurcating twelve flying gargoyles in an instantaneous flash of dark light.

The youth reloaded his service pistol from the reserve pouch, chambering a fresh round before tracking the surviving pack leaders.

He fired three rapid, precision shots into the skulls of three diving alpha gargoyles, dropping them instantly onto the perimeter fence.

The youth landed gracefully on the outer wall, spinning to execute two horned hellhounds that scaled the stone barricade.

Beside him, the striker carved through a cluster of bone warriors with fluid, lethal combinations, her silver ring flashing with blue frost.

"The ground forces are regrouping for another charge along the eastern trench!" the frost mage warned, unleashing another wave of crystalline shards across the grass.

"We have thirty more beasts pushing through the frozen gap!"

"Vasa, concentrate your frost on their back line while our riflemen clean up the front!" Yeda yelled, driving her dagger through a hellhound skull.

"Do not let them form a cohesive wedge!"

"Freezing the eastern lane right now!" the frost mage replied, sending a rolling wave of sub-zero mist crashing into the charging pack.

The sudden frost locked the beasts' paws to the frozen turf, leaving them completely vulnerable to the archers on the ramparts.

The defenders maintained their steady rhythm, combining elemental magic, concentrated gunfire, and lethal melee strikes to dismantle the swarm piece by piece.

Within twenty minutes of brutal combat, the ferocious roar of the monster horde dwindled to scattered dying howls across the blood-soaked field.

"The monster vanguard is breaking... we cleared the outer perimeter!" the frost mage cheered, blasting the remaining stragglers with ice lances.

"Every single beast in the initial wave is down!"

"Inspect your weapons and reload all magazines immediately," the First Player ordered, wiping black monster ichor from his void blade.

"We survived the first surge, but our radars are picking up massive ground vibrations from the southern roadway."

"Are there more monsters coming from the southern rift?" Emilia asked, catching her breath as she retracted her vines.

"Those are not monsters," Nox answered coldly, gesturing toward the rising dust cloud down the avenue.

"Those are human scavengers coming to steal what we just protected."

"They waited until we exhausted our mana against the swarm before making their move," Yeda snarled, cleaning her daggers with a swift flick of her wrist.

"Typical corporate vultures."

Suddenly, the deep rumble of diesel combustion engines echoed from the southern approach, followed by the blinding glare of high-intensity floodlights.

Ten armored combat vehicles and a massive siege tank rolled out from the ruined commercial boulevard, cutting off the school's rear exit.

Over one hundred armed awakened soldiers in gold-trimmed uniforms fanned out behind the armored carriers, leveling automatic assault rifles at the citadel walls.

Standing atop the turret of the massive siege vehicle was a colossal man encased in glowing magma armor, holding an enormous battleaxe.

"Did you really think you could humiliate my emissary and keep this fortress, little sovereign?" the warlord boomed through an external loudspeaker, his voice dripping with sadistic arrogance.

"You fought off the beast wave just to deliver your Citadel straight into my hands!"

"Drake brought his entire mechanized battalion to backstab us while we were fighting the rift horde," Kendra growled, planting her shield against the rear parapet.

"That coward waited until our defenders expended their ammunition before showing his face."

"He thinks forty exhausted fighters cannot stop an armored siege tank," Yeda said, wiping black beast blood from her blade with a cold, mocking smirk.

"He has no idea what he just walked into."

"He believes his siege artillery gives him the right to demand our lives," Nox said, stepping to the edge of the southern balcony.

"Let's show this corporate warlord what happens to invaders who threaten the First Citadel."

"Commander, give the word and our snipers will take out their floodlight operators," Vasa said, frost gathering tightly around her staff.

"We can blind their drivers before they coordinate their firing lines."

"Hold your fire for now," the youth instructed, his eyes locking onto the magma titan atop the tank.

"Drake wants a personal demonstration of sovereign power."

"I will go down there and deliver it myself."

"Take his head, Commander!" Kendra shouted from the ramparts, raising her clenched fist into the air.

"Show these corporate vultures that the First Citadel never bows to anyone!"

"Let him feel what real sovereign authority looks like," the striker whispered, standing beside him at the parapet edge.

"I will cover your retreat path if their riflemen try to swarm."

High atop the siege tank, Drake raised his glowing molten axe toward the main entrance, laughing maniacally as the twin cannon barrels locked onto the gate.

"Open fire with the high-explosive shells!" the titan guildmaster roared to his gunners.

"Blow their gates to dust and leave no survivors alive!"
