Morkai's chambers were quiet and eerily so. The salt wind from the open windows stirred the silk curtains, and the sea's hush lulled the air with a lullaby older than time. I sat alone at the edge of his bed, fingers curled around the sapphire-blue sheets, still warm with his presence. He had gone to the war room hours ago. Tharion had come for him with news from the trench scouts Lysander had dispatched, and I had offered to stay behind. Not out of reluctance. I needed a moment to breathe and think.
