Chapter 172 - Chapter 173: Peace and the Journey Back

Not forgetting Obi-Wan and the others, Amir first returned to the outside of Big Yellow's original lair.

They still had not left. Under everyone's gaze, Amir rode the greater krayt dragon back to a stop in front of them.

With the first shock already behind them, people were calmer this time, but the Tusken Raiders still could not help feeling afraid.

The chieftain took the initiative and walked up to Amir. Chaihoun stepped forward to translate.

[Will the greater krayt dragon still be a threat to us? If it can truly stop attacking our tribe, then even if we did not kill it with our own hands, we are still willing to make peace with your town.]

Amir could tell they were still worried. It was not they who had subdued Big Yellow, so they did not know how controllable it truly was. The Tusken Raiders could not completely trust that this gigantic beast, which had fought with them for generations, would truly remain at peace from now on.

"It won't attack you anymore," Amir said.

Then he handed the dragon pearl in his arms to the chieftain.

The Tusken chieftain stared at the pearl in Amir's hand. Even with his face wrapped in black cloth, his delight was obvious.

Forcing himself to look away, the chieftain asked, [Where did you get this dragon pearl?]

"Far west of here, a long way away. There was another krayt dragon there. We killed it, and this dropped from it."

The eyes of the chieftain and the surrounding Tusken Raiders changed at once.

[We once roamed that far. That dragon was even more savage than the one here. Greedier. More relentless.]

[You're really giving us this dragon pearl?]

"Of course. You helped a great deal this time. Consider it compensation. The corpse of the other krayt dragon is still there. If you want it, you can go take it too," Amir said.

As Chaihoun translated Amir's words, the surrounding Tusken Raiders broke into cheers around their chieftain and the raised dragon pearl.

And with that, the cooperation came to an end.

A long peace formally began.

The Tusken Raiders were savage and brutal, but they had strong honor.

Once they had agreed to something, Amir could trust it completely.

Wove stepped forward and thanked Amir. At last, he now had a quiet place where he could focus on developing his farm.

With neither the krayt dragon nor the Tusken Raiders threatening the town anymore, the people of Mos Pelgo would be much safer in both rest and travel, and their property would no longer be taken without warning.

With everything finished, all that remained was to part ways.

When they had arrived, everyone had ridden the Tusken tribe's Banthas. For the return trip, those were no longer necessary.

After the journey and the battle, Big Yellow was no longer as violent as before.

Now Amir was constantly using the Force to condition it, pouring ideas of peace, friendliness, and harmony between people and nature into its mind.

The way Big Yellow looked at people had already changed. It no longer held hostility. Instead, it had become almost affectionate.

That kind of influence secretly left even Amir shaken.

Put aside questions of morality and alignment, once someone's mastery of the Force reached a certain level, they could do almost anything in the galaxy. As power grew, the ways the Force could be used multiplied endlessly. Without limits, without restraint, it was easy for the hidden desires in a person's heart to awaken.

That was why the Jedi had such strict teachings.

There is no emotion, there is peace.

There is no ignorance, there is knowledge.

There is no passion, there is serenity.

There is no chaos, there is harmony.

There is no death, there is the Force.

Casting aside distracting thoughts was the most obvious way to resist outside temptation.

Only then could one focus on perceiving and learning the Force.

The Sith Code, by contrast, began by telling people that peace was a lie—there was only passion.

By indulging emotion and desire, they sought power and dominion.

As Amir was now, if he wished, he could prepare properly, take Big Yellow with him, and roam the desert hunting krayt dragons, gaining enormous numbers of valuable dragon pearls. With Big Yellow's terrifying presence, he could even control the trade routes of Tatooine. Nothing moving across the ground would be safe from a sudden ambush by Big Yellow.

That would earn him immense wealth and power.

But Amir did not think that way.

He could think of it, but he rejected it immediately.

This was not the right path.

If Big Yellow truly remained obedient, then Amir would rather have it protect the people here—at the very least, live in harmony with them—instead of using its strength to seize benefits for himself.

He lifted the others onto Big Yellow's back, and once more they rode out against the wind and through the waves.

The wind they met was dry, distorted heat.

The waves they broke were bright, burning dunes of sand.

Mos Pelgo

This day felt different to the people of the town.

The newly arrived Devaronian and old Chaihoun, who spent every day soaking himself in drink and talking nonsense, had suddenly left with a blond boy, saying they were going to deal with the Tusken Raiders and the krayt dragon.

How was that even possible?

The Tusken Raiders were irrational, bloodthirsty maniacs.

The only way to deal with them was to kill them all.

And as for the krayt dragon, that was even less imaginable.

If Mos Pelgo had not been built on a hard stone foundation, that monstrous beast would already have swallowed every house and every person whole.

The only thing the townspeople could do was keep their livestock in safe places, and whenever they left town, make sure to choose the right time.

If they ran into trouble anyway, then all they could do was pray.

Even so, with nothing better to do, people gradually came out to stand by their doors, chatting and glancing now and then toward the desert.

Wove was a good man. When the Tusken Raiders had attacked, his accurate shooting had saved many people in the town.

And Chaihoun... well, it would be best if he did not die either. They had lived together for so many years. Of course people had feelings for him.

By noon, a child pointed toward the desert in terror and shouted, "It's the krayt dragon! It's back!"

At that, everyone in town looked where the child was pointing.

It really was the krayt dragon.

What rotten luck.

In the next instant, everyone bolted for their homes.

There was no telling whether the beast might climb up over the town's stone foundation and attack them. Better not to take the risk. Hiding in the house was safest.

Or at least, it felt safest.

One particularly brave young man climbed onto the highest point of one of the houses with a pair of binoculars he had painstakingly bargained from passing Jawas and looked toward the krayt dragon.

He had been observing this creature for a long time, and this time he noticed something different about the way it was coming.

Normally the dragon moved underground. That was faster, and it kept the sun from baking it, preserving moisture.

But this time...

He kept adjusting the focus until the view became clear.

And then he saw familiar figures on top of the krayt dragon's head.

The young man's jaw dropped.

"It's... it's Wove and Chaihoun!" he shouted.

From a window on a nearby house, another young man poked his head out.

"Get your ass back inside, Hans, or you really are gonna go see all three of them!"

"No! It's true! They came back with the krayt dragon—they're riding on its head!"

"Riding a dragon? Don't be ridiculous. That only happens in Tatooine fairy tales. You'd have an easier time convincing people they came back riding a Hutt."

Hans stopped arguing, jumped down from the house, and sprinted toward the edge of town.
