"I saw her, Angela," Alex said in a low tone. He tried to step closer, but she stopped him by holding her palms out.
"There is no way Grace would come… whoever you saw was not my mother, Alex," she said, her face tightening as doubt began to creep in. She wondered if this was some kind of joke, but Alex was not the type to joke about something so sensitive. "Please tell me it's not true."
"Can you calm down and listen to me?" he asked, glancing around as though he didn't want anyone else to see or hear them. He came closer, took her hands, and led her back inside.
