Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: With good fate comes bad fate

"......."

Seeing the white fox greeted him, Chen Fengshui's face froze, and he immediately turned around without delay, quickly sprinting away.

Actually, the first person Ansheng met when he arrived in Changxi Town was not Yu Xueqing, but Chen Fengshui.

Back then, after leaving the mountain, Ansheng chose to take a green train south to come to Changxi Town for a free meal.

Because there was Taoist culture here, along with the tales of the Fox Immortal and the pun story of "Master Fox."

To the fox Ansheng, Changxi Town was a very livable city.

However, when Ansheng transferred to a tricycle and arrived in Changxi Town, he happened to encounter Chen Fengshui, who immediately spotted Ansheng lying on the fruit basket in the tricycle.

Then, Chen Fengshui informed the Forestry Bureau to come and have Ansheng captured and taken away.

There are no farms near Changxi Town, just a few tea mountains, some farmland, ponds, and fish hatcheries.

Since there were no farms, Chen Fengshui felt that the fox must be a wild animal.

One should know, the legend of Master Fox made foxes locally rank among the immortals, as the saying goes, it's easy to invite a goddess, but hard to send one away.

Ordinary families wouldn't and dared not keep a fox as a pet at home.

Letting a mysterious wild animal into the village, who knows if it carries viruses or might damage villagers' property?

So, Chen Fengshui decisively reported it, saying there's a wild animal intrusion in the village, and asked for the comrades to come over.

Ansheng came by train and then left Changxi Town sitting in a pickup, grasping the iron cage with both hands.

The Forestry Bureau captured Ansheng, and in a routine inspection, surprisingly found that Ansheng was not an artificially raised Arctic Fox but a bona fide albino Xiabei Red Fox.

The Xiabei Red Fox is only distributed in the Jingji area, not in other parts of Xia Country.

As soon as the inspection results came out, the Forestry Bureau was flabbergasted and hastily called the Security Bureau, saying that smuggling or poaching might be involved.

The Security Bureau also pulled relevant surveillance footage to trace Ansheng's whereabouts.

Subsequently, the uncles at the Security Bureau were also flabbergasted.

The albino red fox had traveled alone in a green train to Xia Dong Region at night.

After a meeting and discussion, it was unanimously decided to send the albino red fox back to the Xiabei Region and let the zoo over there decide how to handle it.

In Xia Dong District, there are also Xia Dong subspecies red foxes.

Plus, the budget is really limited, and they can't afford to take care of their brothers' fox cubs.

For Chen Fengshui, Ansheng's arrival was actually just a little side episode apart from the daily routine.

Until a week later, old Chen saw Ansheng riding a large boat from the coast into the river, riding the waves back to Changxi Town, and old Chen fell silent.

Old Chen, that night, took stewed lion's head goose, pickles, and roasted chicken to apologize.

Otherwise, old Chen really couldn't explain why there was an authentic national second-class animal imprisoned in his home.

He couldn't just tell the security officer that the fox had become an elf, could he?

Even until now, when Chen Fengshui remembers the second meeting with that fox, he still feels a lingering fear.

"Sigh— the country is really getting better, with green mountains and clean waters developing, even foxes have become elven, knowing they are national protected animals, coming to the village to blackmail, it's really ridiculously absurd..."

"What the hell did I see? I saw a fox squatting on a stool fixing the door lock!"

"That bottle of pickles, I couldn't bring myself to drink...."

After leaving Yu Xueqing's house, Chen Fengshui looked back and couldn't help but shake his head,

Wanting to complain about being bullied by a fox in the village, but not knowing where to start, and feeling too strange to complain about such a bizarre event......

Old Chen even worried his wife would send him to a mental hospital.

Can you say, a Xiabei fox traveled thousands of miles to Changxi Town to bully you?

You must have been drinking fake wine mixed with industrial alcohol to have such a dream!

Bullied by a fox, yet afraid to speak up about it.

Old Chen felt extremely aggrieved, having roamed the mountains and fields for fifty years, there wasn't a wild animal he hadn't encountered.

But a wild one like Ansheng was the first in Old Chen's life to see.

He even had to use a bottle of twelve-year-aged pickles for this.

After all, foxes hold grudges, and if this wasn't handled properly, Old Chen worried the fox might assassinate him.

A national second-class!

Times have changed, technology has progressed, and protection laws that didn't exist before were now complete.

In short, Old Chen felt timid, aggrieved, wanting revenge but fearing imprisonment.

......

"Old Chen, why are you running faster the more I call! I even wanted to borrow a bottle of W40 lubricant."

Watching the distant Chen Fengshui, Ansheng couldn't help but scratch his fox triangular ears, sighing.

Throughout the small town, besides Yu Xueqing, only old Chen knew he had become elven.

However, previously, it seemed like he frightened old Chen; he would now take a detour whenever seeing him....

When he returned to Changxi Town again, Ansheng actually didn't do much, just lay stiffly on the ground, pulling at old Chen's trouser legs, with his long tongue hanging from his muzzle, as if ready to perish.

Then, he followed old Chen home, hoping to crash a meal there.

Old Chen knew he was national second-class and had become elven, where else could he go for a feast if not at his house?

Unfortunately, old Chen wasn't very loyal, after one meal, there was no second meal.

It caused him to have to catch pheasants in the village to eat and bring himself into conflict with the local tyrant king cobra because of it.

"If there's no W40, pencil lead can also be used in a pinch."

Ansheng yawned with a long whine and turned around, with a running start, he leaped onto the courtyard wall's top.

Foxes, also known as elves of the forest, some tough foxes with strong climbing skills can even build their nests on trees seven or eight meters high.

A modest two-plus-meter wall was no obstacle to Ansheng at all.

He walked along the wall to the neighbor's house opposite and looked at their courtyard.

In the courtyard were some scattered farm tools and a few motorcycles stained with yellow mud, along with a slender Labrador. It lay motionless on the ground, emitting a gloomy aura all over.

Gas-canister-sized Labradors are common, but one as skinny as a dry stick is rare.

"Woof——"

Ansheng lay atop the wall, suddenly barking like a dog to greet the skinny Labrador.

"Woof..."

A Labrador named Lai Foo, lying in the shade of the canopy, slightly raised his head to look at the white fox greeting him, responding half-heartedly with a long sigh.

Lai Foo lay back on the ground, lifeless, with dog food in the stainless steel bowl beside him untouched.

"Don't be sad; it's just losing a couple of dog balls, out with the old and in with the new!"

Ansheng leaped across the alley separating the two houses, landing in the neighbor's yard, reaching out full of sympathy to pat Lai Foo's skinny Labrador head, revealing the rebellious back skull.

Lai Foo wasn't lacking food or drink; Lai Foo's grandmother even often fed him snacks.

The reason he was skinny as a lightning bolt was all because of two weeks ago.

The wall at Lai Foo's house wasn't very high, just barely enough, leading to him often jumping over it to hunt, gaining weight from all the extra meals he had.

However, one can't always expect to walk by the river without getting wet.

Two weeks ago, Lai Foo went out for food; Ansheng had just recently arrived at Yu Xueqing's house.

Ansheng watched as Lai Foo ran and made a high jump to go home, but perhaps he was too full, or maybe his foot slipped, his upper body got inside, but his two meat bells were stuck in the door gap.

The Labrador, weighing at least eighty pounds, was supported solely by his two bells, hanging on the door.

Ansheng watched, his eyelid twitching; Lai Foo's miserable whimpers echoed throughout the town.

At the time, the whole family of the homeowner came running out; Yu Xueqing also ran over to help.

But unfortunately, the two bells couldn't bear the eighty pounds, shattering on the spot.

After returning from the pet hospital, Lai Foo seemed to know he'd lost the right to mate and had been melancholy ever since.

"Sigh, Brother Lai, don't be sad. Take a bite to eat; I just came to borrow some lubricant...."

Ansheng barked twice, then turned to search Lai Foo's house for something lubricating.

Fixing door locks and plugging dog holes, he wasn't finished even after two hours, making Ansheng slightly worried about Yu Xueqing checking in on him.

If he'd known Chen would pass by before, Ansheng should have been sitting at the door watching videos, catching Chen to help.

"Sigh...."

Ansheng sighed deeply, such is fate, heaven isn't on my side!
