Chapter 2 - Chapter 1: Children of the Moon

I guess this is the part where I introduce myself, huh?

Well, my full name is Iván Alejandro Vasilios, a 14 years old Hispanic kid.

My hobbies? Playing video games, mostly. Oh, and soccer. That's my favorite sport.

"Iván, hurry up your talking forever!"

And that would be my 10-year-old sister, Sofía. She's a bit cranky in the mornings… and, well, with the whole moving got her in a bitter mood.

Sure, I was a bit upset as well—but knowing the sacrifices my mom made for me, I'm not about to complain.

Afterall she put her life in delay.

But now?

She got her dream job.

A solid offer to teach finance and Spanish at Beacon Hills High School—she couldn't turn it down.

And my dad?

He went missing…

A DEA officer, investigating drug activity in Tijuana 5 years ago when the federal government marked him as missing.

Yeah, drugs were involved, of course—but something about it felt off.

It wasn't just him.

A lot of people disappeared around the same time… and none of them left a trace.

"Iván!"

"Yeah… yeah, I'm coming! No need to yell."

With one last look at his old room, he turned away and stepped out of the house.

He glanced back one more time—so many memories made there, some good… and some he'd rather forget.

"¡Mijo, vámonos! The movers already left—we need to get there before they do!" his mother shouted.

With a small cardboard box in his hands, he smiled.

"Just giving it one last look," he said softly.

He glanced down at the contents inside—the only thing that truly mattered to him (besides his family, of course): his Xbox.

I'm 100 percent playing Call of Duty—

Wait… shit. No Wi-Fi.

It'll be like a week before they install it… so much for my weekend plans.

With a defeated sigh, he walked toward the SUV and climbed in, placing the box between his feet like it was precious cargo.

And then they were off.

His sister immediately fell asleep in the back seat, while he and his mom shared a nice conversation—at least until they hit the highway.

Eventually, he plugged in his earbuds, leaned against the window, and watched the world slip by, cars and scenery blurring together.

This was something he always did on long drives: listening to music and getting lost in his thoughts.

This time, he daydreamed about the future.

Four more years, and he'd be out of school.

College? Maybe. He wasn't sure yet.

Before long, they left the freeway and turned onto a narrow two-lane road.

Trees…

Iván let out a heavy sigh, watching them blur past from the passenger seat.

But then, something strange caught his eye—

Movement in the woods.

For a split second, he thought he saw glowing blue eyes staring back at him.

He blinked hard, took off his glasses, and rubbed his eyes…

But whatever it was—it was gone.

Shit, I'm going crazy.

"Is everything okay?" his mom asked.

"Yeah… thought I saw something in the woods."

"Maybe it was a bear?"

Yeah, maybe," he said, but deep down, he knew it wasn't a bear.

Just thinking about it gave him goosebumps.

Not long after, they zoomed past a sign that read: Welcome to Beacon Hills, officially arriving in town.

Their new home stood in a quiet, well-kept neighborhood—a beautiful two-story house with a clean yard and wide driveway.

He nodded to himself.

A place like this would cost double in a major city.

Iván quickly helped the movers carry the furniture into the house.

By the time everything was inside, the sun was beginning to set.

As for setting up the beds?

Yeah… that can wait until tomorrow.

His mom's bed came first, then his sister's.

His? Dead last.

For now, he'd be sleeping on just a mattress tonight.

Looking around his new room, he started imagining a nice desk with a desktop setup—but that would be a bit costly.

It'd drain his savings, and honestly, buying a car was way more important than a gaming setup right now.

Across the hall, he could see into his sister's room. She was sitting on the floor, happily stuffing her face with pizza.

The way she ate, you'd expect her to be chubby—

But lucky her, she had a fast metabolism.

Heading back downstairs, Iván saw his mom busy on her laptop.

As expected, his mom was working—

It kept her distracted from thinking about Dad.

Iván sighed and left her to it, heading back upstairs to his room. He closed the door behind him.

There were no lights set up yet, but the room was softly lit by the glow of the full moon shining through the window.

Something about it… pulled at him.

Slowly, he walked over, gazing out at its glowing, beautiful display.

Even when he was little, he loved looking at the moon.

It was like taking a bath under the sun—

but gentler.

Cooler.

With the moon instead.

"The Children of the Moon… a tale passed from father to son."

He remembered his father looking at him seriously, his voice low.

There was once a man who fought against the cold and the darkness… until fate decided otherwise. The ground gave way, and the freezing waters pulled him under—beneath a full moon, just like this one.

And what happened to him?

His dad's words came back clearly:

"He struggled—refused to die. He fought against death itself, but it was in vain. He grew cold… and the last thing he saw was the moonlight reaching out to him."

Silents…

"Then, like a sudden burst of energy, his strength returned. Pulling himself out—reborn a child of the moon."

It might not have been the kind of story you'd typically tell a kid, but it definitely sparked his curiosity.

That tale got him into all sorts of things—creepypastas, ghost videos, and anything that looked even remotely supernatural.

With a yawn, Iván stretched.

Well, time to hit the sack.

Not far, deep within the woods, a pair of glowing red eyes watched silently.

A young teenage boy running through the woods, clutching his side—bitten.

But then the wind shifted, carrying a new scent to the creature's nose. Causing it to turn its head sharply.

one thought came to mind:

Vampire.

Then, just as quickly as they had appeared, the red eyes vanished into the darkness of the trees.
