Chapter 209 - The Rhythm of Practice

Scene One

City School Grounds – Early Morning Energy

Ten days passed quietly after the picnic, but City School did not stay calm for long. One morning, the notice board outside both the senior and junior sections carried a bold announcement:

"Annual Sports Festival – Practice Sessions Begin Today."

By the next day, the school grounds transformed completely.

The air was filled with whistles, bouncing balls, running footsteps, and excited voices. Cones were placed neatly on the ground, nets were tightened, wickets were set, and tracks were freshly marked with white lines. Teachers in sports uniforms moved around with clipboards, calling out names and giving instructions.

For the students, it felt like the beginning of something important—something bigger than routine classes.

Scene Two

Badminton Court – Ubaid's Focus

On the senior section side, the badminton court echoed with the sharp sound of shuttlecocks hitting rackets.

Ubaid stood near the baseline, gripping his racket firmly. Sweat had already formed on his forehead, but his eyes were sharp and focused.

"Ready, Ubaid?" the sports teacher asked.

"Yes, sir," he replied, adjusting his stance.

The shuttle came flying toward him.

Thwak.

Ubaid returned it with precision.

"Good control," the teacher said. "But bend your knees more."

Ubaid nodded and tried again. His movements were quick, disciplined, and determined. He remembered how Haroon had once told him, "Sports build patience and character, not just strength."

Between breaks, Ubaid sat with his friends, sipping water.

"You're improving fast," one of them said.

Ubaid smiled slightly. "I want to do my best. Not just for winning, but for myself."

Scene Three

Cricket Nets – Irfan's Spin Dream

A little farther away, the cricket nets buzzed with excitement. Batsmen took turns facing bowlers while classmates watched eagerly.

Irfan stood at the bowling mark, holding the ball confidently in his fingers. He took a deep breath and ran in.

The ball spun beautifully off the pitch.

"Nice turn!" a classmate shouted.

The coach clapped. "That's a proper spin, Irfan. Keep your wrist relaxed."

Irfan grinned. Cricket had always been his passion. He bowled again and again, sometimes missing his line, sometimes getting it perfect.

During a short break, he sat on the grass with his teammates.

"If I get selected in the final team," Irfan said, "I want Abbu and Ammi to watch me play."

"They will," his friend replied confidently. "You're already our best spinner."

Irfan looked toward the nets again, heart racing—not with fear, but with excitement.

Scene Four

Junior Section Track – Fatima's Tiny Determination

On the junior section side, the atmosphere was no less energetic.

Small cones marked the running track, and tiny shoes thudded against the ground as children practiced. Fatima stood among her classmates, her hair tied neatly, eyes bright with excitement.

"Ready, children?" Mrs. Uzma Shah announced gently.

Fatima bent slightly forward, copying what she had seen older runners do.

"Go!"

Fatima ran with all her strength. Her small arms moved awkwardly, but her determination was clear. She reached the finish line, breathing heavily, then turned back with a proud smile.

Mrs. Uzma crouched beside her. "Very good, Fatima. Just keep your eyes forward."

Fatima nodded seriously. "Yes, teacher."

In her little mind, she imagined her family watching her run. That thought alone made her stand taller.

Scene Five

Different Grounds – A Festival of Games

Across the school, practice sessions continued for every sport imaginable.

On the football field, boys passed the ball quickly, shouting instructions.

"Pass here!" "Defend, defend!"

Nearby, hockey players practiced dribbling, their sticks tapping rhythmically against the ball.

On the basketball court, the sound of bouncing balls echoed as students practiced shooting hoops.

At another corner, students trained for kabaddi, chanting loudly as they practiced raids.

Even cycling races had begun, with helmets strapped tightly and cycles lined up carefully.

Teachers moved from one area to another, encouraging discipline and teamwork.

"This is not just about winning," one teacher said loudly. "It's about effort and sportsmanship."

Scene Six

Evening Conversations – Homes Filled with Practice Talk

That evening, at Maryam's home, the dining table conversation revolved entirely around sports.

"I think my smash is improving," Ubaid said while eating.

"And my spin is getting better," Irfan added proudly.

Haroon listened attentively. "Hard work always shows results," he said calmly.

Maryam smiled. "Just don't forget your studies along with practice."

At the same time, in Rimsha's home, Fatima excitedly ran toward her mother.

"Ammi, I ran very fast today!" she said.

Rimsha laughed softly. "I know you did. Just remember to listen to your teacher."

Kulsoom aunty gently placed her hand on Fatima's head. "Mehnat karo, beta. Allah mehnat ka phal deta hai."

Fatima nodded solemnly, as if she fully understood the weight of those words.

Scene Seven

School Grounds – Days of Sweat and Smiles

As days passed, the practice sessions grew more intense. Muscles ached, shoes wore out, and water bottles emptied quickly—but no one complained.

Ubaid learned to control his nerves.

Irfan learned patience with every delivery.

Fatima learned balance, rhythm, and confidence.

Laughter mixed with exhaustion. Friendships deepened. Rivalries stayed healthy.

The school no longer felt like just a place of classrooms—it felt alive.

The sports festival had not yet begun, but in every drop of sweat and every determined step, the spirit of competition was already winning hearts.
