## **Chapter Eight: Thrones in Shadow, Blood in Stone**

> *Location: The Cavern of Mirrors – beneath the old financial district, hidden in time and mind.*

They met once every century.

But tonight, they broke the cycle.

Bai Lu and Rin didn't *sneak* into the summit—no one could. They were *invited*.

A blank card had arrived three days ago, black ink on white vellum:

> *"To the Reawakened Flame and her Jester: Attend. Or be Hunted."*

### **The Hidden Houses**

The elevator down didn't run on power. It ran on *oaths*. It screamed once—something old, something dead—before stopping in an impossible cavern: a palace carved into the bones of the world.

At its heart: the Circle of Thirteen.

Thirteen families. Each older than war. Each inhuman.

They weren't all demons. Not exactly.

But none were mortal.

Some had skin. Some had *pretended* to be human for centuries. One wore the body of a child with shark eyes. Another shimmered like a mirage in perfume and snake venom. One was just… teeth.

Rin whispered, "If any of them offers me tea, shoot me."

Bai Lu didn't answer. Her eyes were locked on the figure at the head of the table.

---

### **The One Who Called Her**

She wore white.

Not fabric—bones. Threads of ancient spines, carved and polished. Her veil was crow feathers. Her voice was a lullaby spoken by knives.

"Erisyn," she said.

Bai Lu tensed.

"I go by Bai Lu now."

The woman smiled. "Names are like cages. We all wear them. You, most of all."

"Why call me here?"

Another spoke—male, made of smoke and glass. "Because the balance is tipping."

"Because *you* woke up," said the child-thing. "And your dreams will kill us all."

"Because," said the voice of teeth, "we remember what you were."

Bai Lu said nothing.

But Rin stepped forward, grinning.

"So you brought her here for tea and vague threats. Very cult-core of you."

Some in the circle hissed. One laughed.

"She still travels with the jester."

"He *amuses* her," said the veiled woman. "I find that more terrifying than his stolen knowledge."

---

### **The Pact of the Broken Star**

The Circle called themselves the **Families of the Hidden Root**. A pact older than recorded magic. When the gods fell silent, when the demons were chained, when the monsters were sealed—they remained. By compromise.

Each family had dominion:

* One ruled dreams.

* One ruled bones.

* One ruled hunger.

* And one… ruled *names*.

They had agreed to never awaken the Abyss again.

But now, rumors spread:

* A temple was found bleeding under a school in Kyoto.

* An archangel's corpse stirred in its prison.

* A *Prince of the Old Night* had spoken Bai Lu's real name aloud.

Something was breaking.

And they were scared.

So they offered a bargain.

---

### **The Bargain of Shadows**

"We will not kill you," said the woman in bones.

"Yet," muttered Rin.

"If," she continued, "you agree to stay asleep. Remain sealed. Do not seek your true self."

Bai Lu stared at her. "Why?"

"Because the last time you woke… we lost half our world."

"She doesn't even remember that!" Rin barked.

"Exactly," said a whisper from the dark. "Imagine what she'll do once she *does*."

Bai Lu finally spoke.

"You're afraid."

"Yes," said the woman. "And we don't enjoy fear."

---

### **Her Refusal**

She looked at each of them. Slowly. Coldly.

"You want me silent. Controlled. Small."

"Yes."

"Then you've misread me."

She turned to leave.

The veil-woman's voice followed.

"If you rise, so will they."

Bai Lu paused. "Let them."

"They will not *follow*. They will not *ally*. They will *hunt*."

"Then I'll remind them," she said, "what I am."

She walked out.

Rin followed, whispering, "Do I get to say something cool too, or—"

"No."

"Okay. Just checking."

### **Somewhere Else – A Rebirth in Ash**

In a desert older than time, a stone cracked.

From within, something blinked.

It smelled her name.

And began to dig.

---

> *The ancient houses rule in shadow. But shadows grow when light rises.*

> *And Bai Lu was never meant to be contained.*

> *Not by blood. Not by fear. Not by them.*

>

> *The Families have declared silent war.*

> *And Erisyn walks closer to waking.*
