Chapter 17 - Inside their world

The door shut behind me with a soft click.

Like it had been waiting for me to finally walk through.

Inside, the building was nothing like I expected. No labs. No cages. Just white walls, soft lighting, and the quiet hum of something running beneath the floor.

The man walked ahead without looking back.

"Welcome," he said simply. "You're further along than most realize at your stage."

I didn't answer.

My heart was pounding, but my head felt strangely calm — like this place was designed to make me feel like I belonged here.

We passed a few people in the halls. None of them looked surprised to see me.

One even nodded like we'd met before.

Had we?

I couldn't remember.

We stopped in front of a room marked only by a number.

The man turned to me. "You've seen things, haven't you? Things that haven't happened yet. But also… things that might happen."

I swallowed hard. "How do you know that?"

He smiled again. "Because we helped you see them."

I froze.

His smile softened. "Not directly. Not always. But we've been guiding your ability since it started. Planting choices. Showing you paths. Making sure you stayed on course."

I took a step back. "What are you talking about?"

He opened the door.

Inside, there was a desk. A chair. And a screen showing something that made my blood run cold.

A video feed.

Of me.

Sitting in a room just like this one.

Talking to someone I didn't remember.

And saying things I'd never said out loud.

"I told you," the man said gently. "You already know how this ends."

But the truth was starting to sink in.

I didn't remember any of this.

And that scared me more than anything.
