Kiah and Naya finished packing the little they'd brought by early morning.
When they descended the stairs, Anwyll was already waiting with the Dai family at the bottom. He had an indifferent expression, while Mr. and Mrs. Dai looked weighed down with sadness.
Mrs. Dai stepped forward first, holding out a small bag to Anwyll.
"Something for the road, since you're not staying for breakfast."
Kiah's brow shot up in surprise. "We are not staying for breakfast?" she blurted before she could stop herself.
Anwyll cut her a sideways glance. "We need to catch the first bus out."
"But—"
"That's not negotiable," he said firmly.
Kiah bit her lips, swallowing the urge to snap at him. Of course he wouldn't understand how vital a proper breakfast was, especially when the base served nothing but slop. Easy for him to dismiss when his meals were always better than theirs.
She huffed quietly, then turned to Mrs. Dai instead.
"Thank you for accommodating us. I really enjoyed your cooking."
