Chapter 2 - Glitched System, Crimson Vortex Sutra

Gasp!

Robert jolted awake, sweating profusely. His breathing was uneven, looking as though he had just woken up from a nightmare.

As he finally relaxed, he began looking around, totally confused. Why did things suddenly change? He remembered, he was inside his apartment, playing a virtual reality game. It was a new horror game that had just been released, and it was ultra realistic.

He was trying it for the first time, and just a few moments ago, he had experienced something that terrified him. It was as if he was experiencing everything first-hand, instead of a game.

But now, having woken up, he could not see the virtual reality goggles that he was previously wearing. Additionally, his surroundings had changed completely.

He was currently seated on a bed that had a mattress that was already worn out. Inside the room that he was in, there was nothing other than the bed, a small table, and a cooking place together with a small cupboard.

It felt uncomfortable sitting, so, Bob stood up. But as he did so, he felt that he was extremely weak at this moment.

He could not help but frown slightly. He was wondering, what was happening? He thought that he had exited the game after being terrified by what had happened to him in the game. But why did it look like he was still in the game?

He began thinking about exiting the game, but no matter how much he thought about it, he could not exit the game at all. Nothing around him changed!

Suddenly, an overwhelming headache hit him. Since he had not moved far from the bed, he collapsed onto the bed, clutching his head. He was trying as much as possible not to scream, for the pain that he was experiencing at that moment was very intense.

At the same time as he was experiencing the headache, he realized that some fragments of memories began appearing in his mind. This went on for more than 10 minutes, before finally the headache disappeared.

Drenched in sweat, Bob continuously gulped in air, as if he had been suffocated by the previous experience. Finally, a few seconds later, he began processing the memories that had appeared in his mind.

And as the memories settled in, he could not help but get shocked. He had actually been transmigrated! And to make matters worse, he had been transmigrated into a world that was demon infested. This world was already on the brink of collapsing!

Bob immediately exclaimed in his mind. 'What is this? What kind of joke is this? I want to go back home! Developers! I want to go back home! If you don't take me back to my apartment right now, I'm going to sue you!'

No way! Bob could not accept this reality. On Earth, he had been living a good life. He had a good job, and had a small company that he had just started. He was only 25 years old, and his future was going to be bright. But now, he had been dumped into this world, where he could die at any moment.

How could he accept such a drastic change? From living a carefree life, to suddenly living a life that was full of worries? It was impossible for him to accept it.

But despite how many times he shouted in his mind, nothing changed. His surroundings remained the same, as if telling him that he had been transmigrated, and he had to get used to It.

Bob wanted to continue complaining when suddenly, a translucent holographic screen suddenly popped up in front of him. The moment that it appeared, he could not help but feel slightly relieved.

It seemed that the developers had suddenly come back to their senses. This kind of prank was something that he did not want to experience anymore.

But his expression shifted completely when the content of the holographic screen revealed itself.

[System binding…. System binding completed. System activating…. System activated.]

[Welcome to the Infinite Skill Upgrade System.]

[With the assistance of the system, all the skills can be upgraded to the highest level possible. There is no limit.]

And apart from the prompts that appeared in front of him, information was directly injected into his mind about this system.

He immediately understood what this system was, and what functions it possessed. Literally, it only had a single function, which was to upgrade skills and techniques. Well, a technique was just a skill, just that it was of a different version.

As the information about the system sunk in, Bob finally began accepting the reality. He had read several web novels, and he understood that there was transmigration, and there was also the concept of the system. It was just that he had never anticipated that he was going to experience this, something that only happened in web novels.

After taking a deep breath, Bob realized that there was no way out. No, there was a way out, and the only way out was to get as strong as possible. As long as he was strong, he would be able to survive. Being strong would allow him to be able to find a way of going back home.

Thinking about this, Bob thought about the system panel. And in the next moment, the content of the holographic screen in front of him shifted.

[Name: Robert Milton

Age: 20

Power level: (mortal)

Techniques: Crimson Vortex Sutra (Common)

Skills:

Divine skills/abilities:

Current skill points: ∞]

Going through the information displayed in front of him, Bob finally understood something. It seemed that he had already awakened.

Every human belonging to this world would awaken at the age of 20. The moment that they awakened, they would receive a technique that would enable them to be able to absorb the energy that could be found within this world.

By absorbing that energy, they would be able to get stronger. But of course, they could also use other resources in order to be able to develop faster.

But that was not the point. The point was that, it seemed that the system was actually glitched. The current number of skill points was actually infinite!

The information about the system had already been injected in his mind, and so, he already understood the system. According to the information, he was supposed to get the skill points by killing demons. Then, the skill points would be used to upgrade the skills and techniques that he had.

But now, the number of skill points that he possessed was actually infinite! Did that imply that he could upgrade his skills without end?

Just thinking about this possibility, Bob could not help but get excited. If that was the case, did that not imply that he would be able to go back home sooner than expected?

He understood the power structure within this world. Currently, he was a mortal. That was because he had not yet used the technique that he possessed in order to absorb the energy in the air.

Regardless, if he did that, he would be able to be upgraded to a level 1 soldier. The soldier realm had 9 levels, and after the 9th level, it would be the captain realm. Then there was the Commander, Master, Grandmaster, Lord, and then Overlord.

This was the information that was gained, possibly from the previous owner of this body. And coincidentally, this person was actually called Robert Milton as well.

Currently, he was inside a stronghold that was constructed by humans. This was stronghold number seven, and it was in a domain called Durnvale.

The memories that he had, did not possess that much information about Durnvale, but there was one thing that he was clear about, there were several strongholds under the control of Durnvale.

But there was one thing that he noted, that was that occasionally, there would be demon tides. Demons would attack the stronghold occasionally, and if a demon managed to get into the city, they would slaughter any human that they encountered.

It was a good thing that the stronghold defenses had never been breached, at least not totally. While some demons managed to sneak into the stronghold occasionally, they would be taken care of as soon as possible.

But the problem was that, in the short time that would be taken by the enforcers to eliminate the demon, there would be casualties, and that was something that Bob feared.

Back to the main point. Currently, the technique that he possessed was only of a common level. And techniques and skills were categorized from Common, Uncommon, Rare and finally Epic.

The technique that a person got after awakening could not be changed or upgraded. This could basically be said that it was the determining factor of the future limit of a person.

That implied that with a common technique that he currently possessed, it would be impossible for him to possess the strength that would allow him to be able to leave this world. But with the system, could he actually upgrade it?

As he thought about that, Bob focused on the holographic screen, before focusing on the point on the technique. In front of the technique, there was a plus sign.

Bob only had to think about it, and the holographic screen changed. What was displayed in front of him was as follows.

[Upgrade Crimson Vortex Sutra? To upgrade to Uncommon tier, the required number of skill points is 10. Current skill point balance: ∞]

Bob blinked his eyes at the prompt that he received. While feeling slightly anxious, Bob accepted, and in the next moment, the text on the holographic screen changed.
