c107: Promotion
The two Uchiha moved swiftly leaping across rooftops, racing along eaves, high walls, and tree branches. Their feet skimmed the surface of narrow streams and ponds, chakra flowing precisely into their soles. Their movements were fluid, precise, and fast textbook execution of the Body Flicker Technique combined with chakra-enhanced movement.
"Captain," said Shu, glancing sideways. "I was ignorant before and misunderstood you. I was out of line. Please accept my apology."
Gen replied calmly, "It's nothing. A minor misunderstanding. Don't dwell on it."
Among the Uchiha, strength always commanded respect. Disagreements faded quickly in the face of overwhelming ability and results. And if the one demonstrating that strength was from the clan itself, the respect deepened.
"Fill me in on the structure of the Police Force's divisions. I've only held this title in name so far and didn't make time to really understand how it all works."
"Yes, Captain."
"The Police Force has nine main divisions," Shu explained. "The First through Fourth Divisions are responsible for patrolling the four cardinal sectors of Konoha East, West, South, and North."
"The Fifth through Eighth Divisions handle the four diagonals Southeast, Southwest, Northeast, and Northwest."
"Our Ninth Division, the one you now lead, is assigned to patrol outside the village perimeter. We operate in the forests, rivers, cliffs, and open plains beyond the outer walls."
"Each three-man cell is assigned a sector to cover."
"The regions outside Konoha are divided into four: southeast, southwest, northeast, and northwest. Each region requires one team. That's four three-man units."
"In addition to you, Captain, we currently have four more operatives. The other four rotate as reinforcement or mobile reserves. You're the command authority when present. In your absence, Deputy Captain Chen assumes command."
Gen nodded. "How do you rotate duty shifts?"
Shu chuckled lightly. "Captain, the Ninth Division doesn't run in shifts like the others. We don't do overnight posts under normal circumstances."
"In spring and summer, we finish our patrols by 8 p.m. In autumn and winter, we usually wrap up by 7 p.m. We retreat when daylight fades."
"That's because our patrol routes are the most dangerous wild animals, rogue shinobi, and the occasional rogue summon. Not to mention we cover the largest patrol radius."
Gen nodded again. It made sense. If the unit was full of slackers, they'd vanish into the woods and fish all day. But Shu's attitude was steady and his chakra signature strong. The others seemed to be similarly diligent.
Still, the risks were real. Outside the village walls, there were venomous insects, wolves, bears, missing-nin, and spies from other villages who might exploit the chaos of the Nine-Tails' recent rampage.
"Once this emergency lockdown ends, I want to reorganize the squad into eight two-man teams," Gen said. "One team per patrol zone. Two mobile units. Two teams resting. That way, each shinobi gets better rest without weakening our coverage."
Shu grinned. "You're a real captain, Captain. Everyone's going to like that."
Though the Uchiha were as disciplined as any Konoha ninja, they weren't zealots. A rotation plan with proper rest would certainly be welcomed.
"Introduce me to the team members."
"Yes, Captain."
"Our deputy captain is Uchiha Chen. He's…"
Introductions continued as they moved deeper into the forest. They soon crossed the village border and entered a dense woodland with towering trees, thick underbrush, and scattered traps.
The wind was sharp tonight, whistling through the leaves and branches above. In the distance, the howls of nocturnal predators echoed. Insects buzzed, and frogs croaked near unseen creeks.
But these sounds didn't frighten seasoned shinobi.
Fear, for ninja, didn't stem from the natural world it came from chakra signatures that didn't belong.
After arriving at a designated contact point marked by a hidden seal array on a tree trunk, Shu performed a quick hand sign and sent out a silent flare via a coded chakra pulse.
A moment later, a figure emerged from the shadows, eyes gleaming red.
"Deputy Captain," Shu said, "our new captain has officially taken command."
The man nodded, sharingan spinning briefly. "So you're Gen. If it were anyone else, I might challenge them for leadership."
He was in his mid-twenties, tall and lean with sharp facial features and a long scar over his left eyebrow. He wore the slim black combat gear standard for the Police Force's outdoor units.
"But after last night the way you handled Root and the Third Hokage — I'm convinced."
Gen gave a slight bow. "Thanks for your support."
Chen smirked. "That's not flattery. The strength, insight, and decisiveness you showed during the Nine-Tails incident... that's leadership."
"Enough formalities," Gen said. "We're all Uchiha here."
Chen nodded. "I've sent the other teams to set traps in the east, west, and south sectors."
"Good," Gen said. "The denser the trap array, the harder it'll be for intruders to slip past."
They avoided deploying heavily around the northern mountain sector — still technically under surveillance by the Root faction. Better to avoid unnecessary friction for now.
Because not all shinobi could use sensory ninjutsu, the Ninth Division set physical, chakra-based, and seal-based traps in the outer zones. They couldn't guard the entire perimeter, but they acted as the final line of defense — the net that caught anything that slipped through the cracks.
If foreign spies tried to smuggle information out of the village, they would first need to bypass the sensor network maintained by the Yamanaka and Hyuuga clans and then escape through the terrain patrolled by the Ninth Division.
"Well done," Gen said. "Let's begin the sweep. I'll use soul perception."
Chen's eyebrows rose. "Soul perception? Impressive. That means no rat will escape."
"Hopefully," Gen said. "There are strange jutsu out there. Nothing is guaranteed."
He activated his Sharingan. Three tomoe spun in each eye. Shu and Chen did the same.
Under the pale moonlight, the glow from three pairs of crimson eyes shimmered coldly. Compared to the wild beasts of the forest, their presence was far more intimidating.
Gen's soul-sensing technique extended in a cone-shaped wave across the patrol zones. If he had a person's soul aura on record, he could recognize them from great distances even while at home.
He scanned all four sectors east, west, south, and north and while nothing suspicious was detected, he committed every teammate's soul aura to memory.
If an unknown chakra signature entered his range, they'd have no place to hide unless they used a highly specialized jutsu capable of masking their soul completely.
Such jutsu were exceedingly rare. Even Zetsu's "Spore Technique" and "Mayfly" might not fully conceal a soul. After all, Zetsu could be used as a sacrifice for Edo Tensei and was affected by the Reaper Death Seal — both of which interact directly with souls.
Gen was confident: unless the infiltrator had a soul-blocking barrier like the Uzumaki's Adamantine Sealing Chains or was a being like Black Zetsu, few could escape his notice.
The first half of the night passed quietly.
But around 3 a.m., while resting on a branch thick enough to let a horse gallop across, Gen suddenly opened his eyes.
"Follow me."
Chen and Shu rose wordlessly and followed. Within minutes, the three reached the forested northwest sector.
Gen raised a hand. The group dispersed Chen melted into the shadows, Shu concealed himself behind a thick tree trunk.
Gen cloaked his chakra and concealed himself using low-level genjutsu suppressing both sound and movement.
Half a minute later, a figure emerged slowly from the earth.
It was a spy no headband, dark clothes, cautious movements. He scanned the area, checked for traps, and then leapt out.
Only to be greeted by a pair of glowing red eyes.
He spun and darted left more Sharingan.
He panicked and fled in a third direction another pair.
And then he realized: he wasn't running in circles. He was caught in a genjutsu — a Gen-style Sharingan illusion that manipulated the very perception of space.
He tried to form the Genjutsu Release hand seal, but his chakra wouldn't respond.
In reality, the man had collapsed, slumped in place, caught fully in the illusion.
By the time he regained clarity, his arms were bound and Uchiha Shu was finishing a precise knot with ninja wire.
"Another one caught in the net," Shu said calmly.
Gen knelt beside the spy, inspecting his gear, forehead, and chakra flow.
No headband. No village insignia.
He wasn't just a rogue he was a ghost. The kind sent to vanish if caught.
And now, he'd be interrogated.
Alive.
