c101: Obito Was Stunned
"Hiss... if that thing lands in the village…"
Sarutobi Hiruzen drew a sharp breath. His heart pounded, but he quickly steadied himself. He had once been called "The Professor" for a reason—he was the Third Hokage, battle-hardened through decades of war.
"Everyone, drive the Nine-Tails out of the village perimeter!"
As he gave the order, Hiruzen bit his thumb, swiftly weaved hand signs, and slammed his palm to the ground.
"Kuchiyose no Jutsu!"
With a puff of smoke, the Monkey King: Enma appeared.
Despite his size, Enma was a high-ranking summon, stronger than larger beasts like Manda or Gamabunta in terms of raw close-combat ability. He could transform into the Adamantine Staff (Kongō Nyoi Bō) a nigh-indestructible, shape-shifting weapon.
Many Konoha shinobi who had frozen in shock at the earlier Bijūdama attack snapped back into action. Ninjutsu poured out like a multicolored monsoon—Suiton, Katon, Doton, Raiton all slamming into the Nine-Tails' frame, agitating it into a feral rage.
Hiruzen seized the opportunity. Wielding the Adamantine Staff, which extended with brutal force, he aimed directly at the Kyūbi's abdomen.
"Enma, full force!"
"Got it!"
With a mighty roar, the staff expanded like a steel spear, slamming into the beast. Even the Kyūbi, in its full form, was momentarily forced back, sliding across the ground in a controlled push. The path Hiruzen chose led across the Naka River flat, unobstructed terrain ideal for isolating the beast.
But it wasn't enough.
Despite being forced back, the Nine-Tails' monstrous weight and chakra density stabilized it quickly. In just moments, it stood at the outskirts of Konoha, its paw one step away from the village walls.
With a furious growl, it swatted the golden staff aside. The blow sent Hiruzen flying like a leaf in a storm.
Nearby ANBU moved to intercept. Six of them leapt up, but five were immediately blasted back by the force of the impact. One finally managed to catch the Hokage mid-air.
ROAR!
Kyūbi, enraged, inhaled sharply. Yin and Yang chakra spiraled in its maw. A massive Bijūdama formed far larger than the mini-versions launched earlier.
This time, there was no one close enough to stop it.
The Konoha ninja watching from a distance were overwhelmed with dread. Many froze. This was not just an attack—it was a death sentence.
But instead of targeting the shinobi...
BOOM, the Bijūdama launched straight toward Hokage Rock.
It was a calculated blow psychological warfare. The destruction of Konoha's proud symbol would devastate morale, both within the village and across the Shinobi world.
A village that couldn't even protect the stone faces of its past leaders? That would be an international embarrassment.
As the deadly sphere neared its mark
Flash.
A streak of yellow light appeared atop Hokage Rock. Namikaze Minato, the Fourth Hokage, stood ready. His fingers blurred through seals.
Fūinjutsu: Shikokumujin Barrier Seal! (Four-Corner Sealing Barrier)
From his hands, a web of black sealing script spread through the air like threads of ink. The Bijūdama didn't explode on impact instead, it was drawn in like a stone swallowed by a swamp.
In the distance, a muffled boom and flash lit the sky as the deflected Bijūdama detonated harmlessly in the forest far outside the village's range.
Konoha was safe—for now.
Just then, a spatial ripple twisted into existence behind Minato. Obito, masked and cloaked, emerged silently to attack.
But Minato had already sensed the space-time distortion using his keen perception honed through years with the Flying Thunder God technique.
He stabbed backward with a marked kunai.
Obito phased his head using Kamui, the kunai harmlessly passing through. But he immediately grabbed Minato's arm, initiating a vortex to drag him into the Kamui dimension.
Minato acted instantly triggering Flying Thunder God to teleport out of the grip just as space began to distort.
"Got away again…" Obito muttered, narrowing his eyes and locking on to the Flying Thunder God's lingering spatial trace.
He vanished in a swirl of space.
---
Meanwhile, the moment of delay had opened an opportunity.
Konoha's forces launched a full-scale assault on the Nine-Tails, driving it further away from the village. Though the Bijūdama was devastating, it had a cooldown period—Kyūbi couldn't launch them in rapid succession without recharging chakra.
---
Elsewhere, in a secluded cabin near the village edge, Minato and Obito clashed again.
This fight was not like the one shown in the manga. Minato, thanks to prior intel gathered from the attack on Kushina and his study of space-time jutsu, knew Obito's abilities in advance.
There was no time wasted.
Obito phased into the battlefield, only to be immediately intercepted by Minato's Flying Thunder God Level Two: Hiraishin Giri—a teleport-enhanced lunge paired with the Odama Rasengan.
BAM!
The massive spiraling sphere exploded on impact, hurling Obito into a nearby hill, reducing it to rubble.
Obito lay stunned.
What...? Already?
How did he see through it? Wasn't my Kamui timing perfect?
He stared blankly at the cracked sky above, a mix of shock and disbelief filling his chest.
Was all my training… meaningless?
His thoughts spiraled. Doubt took root.
After a few moments, he forced himself to move. Through the pain, he clumsily weaved the Mao, Hai, and I seals. White fluid from the Zetsu prosthetics oozed from his shattered arm.
Smoke still hung in the air as Obito emerged from the dust, landing on a grass-covered boulder. His left arm was limp, braced against his right for support.
Minato watched silently.
That Rasengan would have broken steel. Yet he survived...
Wood Release healing? Enhanced body regeneration?
Minato recalled rumors of experiments combining Senju DNA with Uchiha survivors. It clicked.
Hashirama's cells…? Wood Release…? So he's connected to Madara.
While he never underestimated an opponent, Minato now confirmed the immense vitality behind the mask.
Then he acted.
In a flash of yellow light, Minato reappeared behind Obito, having tagged him with a Flying Thunder God formula earlier in their scuffle.
With one hand, he seized Obito by the neck, crushing his windpipe. His other hand pressed a binding seal directly onto Obito's back.
Choking, Obito realized his intangibility couldn't activate while physically restrained. His Kamui was sealed. Panic surged through him—not for death, but for exposure.
He's going to unmask me… No, not like this!
But Minato had no intention of learning his identity. He intended to finish the job.
In a flash, a chakra-coated kunai stabbed straight through Obito's mask, lodging into the skull beneath.
Yet
Pop.
Obito vanished like a bubble bursting.
From a tree branch above, the real Obito materialized, gasping for breath. He'd used Kamui to warp away just in time, leaving behind a shadow clone imbued with mass.
"I was almost…"
Obito didn't finish the sentence. The swirling vortex of Kamui activated again, consuming him.
He vanished from sight.
---
Minato stood still, kunai at the ready.
A long silence passed before he exhaled.
He escaped… and I couldn't finish him. Not this time.
An enemy with intangibility, rapid spatial movement, and enhanced healing was a nightmare. More importantly, he retreated decisively when pressed.
Minato's thoughts darkened.
Who was that man?
Uchiha Madara? Impossible. He's been dead for decades.
But then… could it be a survivor? A disciple? Someone who inherited his will?
And then there was the most terrifying question of all:
What kind of jutsu lets a dead man live again?
