[The Barren Lands]
Sunny, completely unaware of what's happening in the real world, slowly opened his eyes, staring at the red sky. The crimson expanse above looked less like a morning dawn and more like an open wound, bleeding light onto the desolate landscape.
He turned his head to the east side of the hill top, staring at the rising Sun. It was a sluggish, heavy thing in this realm, dragging itself over the horizon to burn away the night's chill.
"Here we go." He helped himself up, his muscles screaming in protest. He stood at the edge of the plateau, watching the creatures below rushing away. The horde of black spiders scuttled like a retreating tide, desperate to escape the searing touch of the light.
He stared at the ones hiding in the hill's elongated shadow, and a frown appeared on his face. The angle of the sun meant the west side of the hill—his direct path—was cast in a long, triangular darkness, teeming with chittering horrors waiting for a mistake.
