Chapter 8 - Chapter 8

RAY'S POV

I drove out of the underground parking lot. My choice of car was clearly for the speed, and the Audi being my favourite meets the requirement; not just because I want to be quick so I can meet up the business meeting with Miss Lewis, but for the love of speed and the thrill that comes with it.

The only time I ever stopped on the way was for the red light. I hate the red light the most of all the things that could cause traffic. I hate waiting, I hate having to stay back while the car in front of me gets to make it across because it was two seconds early enough to cross before the red light appeared. But rules are rules. Breaking them will result to consequences. And one of those consequences would be drawing attention to myself. I wouldn't want that for my sanity. And my family would not want that for their reputation.

It took me 20 minutes to get to Avalon. I started having mixed feelings knowing that I would soon get to George's apartment building. So much has happened, my once favourite cousin is now someone I am not so comfortable being around with. Perhaps his mother is the reason. Or maybe so many piled up events led to this withdrawal from my end. Funny how my withdrawal did not stir up any worries from his end. But it's all good, we all have our lives to live.

A wave of relief swept across my mind as the red light turned green. This is the last traffic light before I get to George's. It's right after Avalon building. With a swing, I drove past the truck in front of me. My eyes dashed to my wrist watch for a second. I was wearing one of Patek Phillippe collection. It used to be my dad's. Well, until he passed on. My phone started ringing and I was glad it was connected to Bluetooth. I immediately answered knowing it's the old man.

"I asked you to bring George to the mansion," I got pissed over his statement, but there was nothing I could do. I just had to calm myself down before responding to him. It's called paying respect.

"I'm on my way," I said to him. Then without waiting for him to say anything else, I plucked out the airpod from my ear and dropped it on the seat. The airpod had barely landed when I noticed a figure right in front of me. I tried to advert, but I was driving on high speed. I felt anxious, and in less than a second I was already sweating having lost control.

"Bang! Thud!"

And that was it. The car finally stopped, but so did my heart. I stayed inside the car unwilling to step out. My thoughts was already in so many places, hoping and praying I didn't hit the girl. But so many people already gathered around and someone was bashing my car window.

I was terrified and all I could think was that I had killed someone. I was shaken in a manner I've never been before. Or perhaps, I have felt this way once, the day my father died.

I forced myself out of the car and walked towards the front to see a lady lying on the ground lifeless. She was covered in blood and I was covered in fear.

"Didn't you see her crossing?" someone yelled at me. I felt someone throw something at me. It felt lighter than my heart at that moment. I knelt down beside the lady to check if she was breathing, but I could barely feel her heartbeat. My hands were shaky and I felt my legs going weak as memories started to haunt me; my father's lifeless body being carried into an ambulance while I stood there crying with blood all over me.

"Miss!" I called out but got no response.

The ambulance was quick. It seems someone by the side already called the emergency line. I felt intoxicated being tossed aside as the paramedics arrived. They placed the lady on the stretcher and carried her into the ambulance. My reflex had me jumping inside the ambulance. Even though I felt confused, I wanted to take responsibility for my actions. If I had not looked away for a brief moment, this accident would not have happened.

I had my phone in my pocket so I immediately texted Carlo to get my car, even if he has tow it down to my penthouse. I felt fortunate that I always leave my phone in my pocket and that I could be sane enough to remember I left my car out on the road.

"Hold!" one of the paramedics said to me as he placed both my hand on her chest.

"Put in enough pressure, we need to keep her alive." he said to me. I was not used to all these, but I watched him give her a shot. It made me wonder if that too is his job. But we soon arrived the hospital and there was already some stand-by nurses waiting outside for the ambulance to arrive. They transferred the lady to another stretcher and rushed her inside. I ran after them because I needed to be sure that she would be alright. Since the paramedic team said we needed to keep her alive, it only means that there's hope that she would survive this. But if I had not catches a glimpse of her in my distraction, how bad would this accident have been? I doubt she would still be alive.

I spent over 30 minutes in front of the theater watching the doctors and nurses run around with no feedback. I noticed a random lady run towards me, then past me. It didn't take long for her to come back and then she patted me on the back.

"I saw what happened. Even if everyone blames you, I know it was not your fault,"

She handed me a purse and an android phone.

"It belongs to the lady she said. I think you should find a way to reach someone close to her,"

With a reassuring smile on her lips, she went to sit down. She felt like an angel to me. She was here to support me through a tough time in my life, and I felt indebted to her already. I checked the phone she gave me and saw that I would need password to access it. But luckily, she had set up her emergency contact. But there was only one emergency contact. I immediately put the emergency contact on dial. I didn't give the person a chance to talk before asking the individual to come to the hospital because the owner of the phone was involved in an accident. I heard deafness and then a crashing sound. That was all until 15 minutes after when I saw George in the hospital. He was running after a lady who looked scattered.

"George!" I called out to him. He turned to see me and was surprised. Anyone would be surprised to see me in such state. I was covered in blood.

"It was you! It was you!" the lady George was running after charged at me after having an interaction with a nurse.
