Chapter 79: Second or Nothing
Sunday, May 2, 2010
Crawley Town's flame flickered but refused to go out after a dramatic 2–2 draw with Northampton Town.
Max Simons struck twice, leading from the front, but a crushing 92nd-minute equalizer robbed them of the win.
Still, they stood on 88 points, clinging to 2nd place in League Two.
Notts County, already crowned champions with 93 points, loomed ahead the final match of the season set for May 6 at Meadow Lane.
Just behind, Bournemouth sat 3rd on 87, still within striking distance. Crawley's promotion was secure.
But pride wasn't.
Momentum wasn't.
And the FA Cup final against Chelsea waited just beyond the horizon.
Now, it was about finishing strong.
Holding onto 2nd.
Carrying fire into Wembley.
The morning broke bright over Crawley.
The sting of Northampton's late goal still lingered, but it was dulled by sunlight and belief.
