Chapter 5 - The Cup Clash

Chapter 5: The Cup Clash

Saturday, November 7, 2009

The autumn weather had turned cold at the training ground. Milan's voice could be heard across the pitch as he shouted instructions while the players worked through their drills.

The FA Cup First Round was coming up, and everyone knew it was an important game.

This wasn't just another League Two match. The FA Cup gave smaller clubs a chance to face bigger teams and create a special moment for themselves.

Niels had noticed a change in the squad over the past week.

After winning their last two games, the players seemed more confident. They weren't getting carried away, but they believed in themselves a little more.

As the players came onto the pitch, they were joking and talking with each other.

Niels watched them and felt that familiar excitement he used to get before matches as a player.

But this time was different.

He wasn't the one stepping onto the pitch.

He was the one making the decisions.

And he knew that his choices could have a big effect on what happened next.

Milan walked over and looked across the squad.

"You ready for this, Niels?"

Niels smiled, although he was clearly nervous.

"Yeah. But the FA Cup is different. One bad mistake and we're out."

Milan nodded.

"Exactly. That's why I'm taking charge today. But I still want you involved. Keep an eye on the game, help with substitutions, and speak up if you see something that needs changing. You're getting better at this, so trust yourself."

Niels appreciated the confidence Milan was showing in him.

"Alright," he said, nodding. "I'll be watching."

Milan gave him a quick pat on the shoulder.

"Good. Let's make it count."

The players gathered in a circle near the middle of the pitch. They were already sweating, and their breath showed in the cold air.

Milan stepped forward.

"Alright, lads, listen up. This is the FA Cup. It's not just another game. It's a chance to show what Crawley can do. So let's make it count."

Niels stood beside him and watched the players. He could see the change in their faces. They were focused now.

Niels leaned toward Milan.

"Let's start strong. We need to show them we're not afraid."

Milan nodded.

"Agreed. We'll use a 4-3-3. McCulloch and Thompson stay at the back. Jamal sits in midfield, and Luka gets the freedom to attack. We need him at his best today."

The players nodded and started getting into position.

Niels looked over at Luka Radev. The 17-year-old was casually juggling the ball, looking completely focused.

Luka had plenty of talent, but Niels knew the FA Cup could be tough. The game would be more physical, and Luka would need to be ready for that.

Nearby, Jamal Osei listened carefully. He was one of the most reliable players in midfield and always stayed calm under pressure.

"Dev Patel and Dwyer will play on the wings," Milan continued. "Simons will start up front. He might not do much outside the box, but give him the right passes and he'll put the ball away."

Niels looked at the formation and added, "Darby and Haines stay at full-back. Let them get forward when they can. It'll give their defense more to worry about."

The players split into groups and started working on the tactics. Their voices carried across the foggy pitch as they called to each other and encouraged their teammates.

Liam McCulloch, the captain, took charge of the defense. He kept shouting instructions and making sure everyone knew where to be.

Kieron Marsh, one of the younger academy players, was full of energy. He chased after every ball and never seemed to slow down.

Later that evening, Niels was sitting in his small office watching footage of Hereford United.

Milan knocked on the door before walking in.

"This is your chance too, Niels," he said. "I'll make the big decisions, but I want you involved. Help with the substitutions and tell me what you're seeing during the game. Trust your instincts."

Niels leaned back in his chair and gave a nervous laugh.

"So I'm your right-hand man now?"

Milan gave him a small smirk. It was unusual to see him smile like that.

"Don't get too confident, kid."

The day of the match finally came.

Crawley were playing Hereford United in the FA Cup. Hereford had caused a few surprises in the competition before, so nobody was taking them lightly.

The team bus arrived at Edgar Street. A group of Crawley fans were already waiting and cheering from outside. There weren't many of them, but they were loud.

In the dressing room, the players changed into their kits. Their shirts were lined up along the wall, and the room smelled of liniment and grass.

Niels stood near the touchline with Milan as the players finished warming up. He could hear the crowd getting louder by the minute.

He felt nervous, but also excited.

Then the referee blew the whistle, and the match began.

Kickoff:

The first few minutes were difficult. Hereford started the game with a lot of pressure and kept pushing Crawley back. Crawley's defenders had to clear the ball several times.

Osei kept shouting instructions to the defence, while McCulloch and Thompson dealt with the crosses coming into the box. The crowd was loud, cheering whenever Hereford attacked and reacting to every tackle.

"Hereford have started well," the commentator said. "Crawley are struggling to get out of their own half."

After a while, Crawley began to settle down. Jamal helped them control the midfield, winning tackles and keeping the ball moving.

Luka was starting to cause problems too. He got past a couple of defenders and played the ball to Simons. Simons turned away from his marker and took a shot, but the goalkeeper saved it easily.

The Crawley fans cheered anyway. Some waved their scarves, while a young fan near the front held up a sign that read, Crawley to Glory!

Niels was thinking about what to do next. Hereford had been pressing hard for most of the game, and their players were beginning to look tired. Reece Darby and Haines were struggling to keep up with the wingers.

Niels looked over at Milan. Milan gave him a small nod.

"Tom Whitehall, get ready!" Niels shouted. "Robbie Sharpe too!"

The substitutes quickly started warming up. A few minutes later, they came on and gave Crawley some fresh energy.

There were only three minutes left when Dev got the ball on the right. He sent a cross into the box.

Max Simons jumped for it and connected with the ball perfectly. His header flew past the goalkeeper and into the net.

"GOAL! Max Simons with the header! Crawley are in front!"

1-0

The Crawley fans went crazy after the goal. Niels jumped up from the touchline, both fists clenched.

"Yes!" he shouted, almost losing his voice in the noise.

He turned toward the bench, laughing as he raised his arms. The players on the pitch were celebrating too, and Niels couldn't stop himself from smiling. He had been nervous throughout the match, but all of that disappeared in that moment.

The final whistle came a few minutes later.

Full-time: Crawley 1-0 Hereford.

The players were celebrating in the dressing room. Some were laughing and joking, while others were congratulating each other. Everyone was tired and covered in sweat, but nobody seemed to care.

Niels walked over to Milan and gave him a pat on the shoulder.

"You were right to give me the chance," he said, still smiling. "It felt good to be out there."

Milan gave him a small smile.

For the first time, Niels felt like he was more than just an assistant. He was becoming part of the team.

And this was only the first step.
