Chapter 9 - Chapter 9

Mateo's P.o.v

Sam is my top enforcer, a ruthless and efficient guy who had a talent for getting things done. I knew that I could count on Sam to take care of Guzman's threat, no matter what it took.

I had summoned for Sam to meet me at my mansion, and I had met him waiting on my arrival, but my main reason for that was far more than the deal. He was a friend to my father's enemy and now he just had to make it worse by proving smart. Proving smart than you are is something I've always liked, by the way I see it as a challenge and now Guzman has challenged me.

"We have a problem, Sam," I said as I pace to and fro in my living room. "Guzman is planning to hit on us and I need you to take care of it."

Sam's response was immediate. "Consider it done, boss. I'll take Guzman and his crew."

I nodded, a cold smile spreading across my face. I know that with Sam on the job, the Sinaloa threat would soon be neutralized. "You may leave Sam."

After I'm done with Guzman today, I'll head back to Mexico tomorrow and finish with my plans with Jasmine. She and Guzman has always been my number one enemy following the event that took my father's life.

I sat in the dimly lit study in my mansion surrounded by the shadows of my family's past. I was just fifteen when the news of my father's assassination spread like wild fire. I stared blankly at the old newspaper chipping in my hands, the headline screaming out at me like a ghost from my childhood.

"Mafia boss, Morales Escobar, gunned down in brutal assassination."

My eyes drifted closed, and I was transported back to that faithful day when I was just a teenager. I remembered the sound of my mother's screams, the feel of my father's warm blood on my hands as I cradled his lifeless body.

My father Morales Escobar, had been a powerful mafia boss, respected and feared by all who knew him. He had built his empire through blood, sweat and tears and had become one of the most influential men in the city.

But on that day, he had been gunned down in a brutal assassination, leaving our family in shambles. The police had never caught the killer, and the case has gone cold. Evidences through an Intel pointed to Salvatore and I just couldn't believe that a human would stoop so low to end his fellow human's life just because of some money. Salvatore had stolen some money from my father and when he got caught, he vowed to get his revenge. My road to revenge on Salvatore was cut short following a car accident that claimed his life, but the flames ignited when I saw his name appear on that my screen that auction night.

My eyes snapped open, and gazed around my study, taking in the familiar surroundings. I had built my own empire, one that rivaled my fathers in power and influence. I had become one of the most feared and respected Mafia bosses in the city and I had never forgotten the lessons my father had taught me.

I thought about my mother, who had been devastated by my father's death. She had never been the same, always looking over her shoulder, waiting for the other shoe to drop. I had vowed to protect her, to make sure she never had to suffer like that again.

And then there was my sister, Stella. She had been just a little girl when our father was killed, but the trauma had stayed with her. She had grown up to be a beautiful and intelligent woman, but I knew that she still carried scars of that day with her.

My thought were interrupted by a knock at the door, it was my consigliere, Pablo. "You've got news Mateo," Pablo said, his voice low and urgent.

My eyes narrowed. "What is it?"

"Octavio," Pablo handed the phone he was holding and I sat behind my desk, my eyes scanning the room as I place the phone close to my ears.

"Did you take care of it?" I asked Octavio in a low and even voice. I had sent them to gather information about Jasmine.

"Yes, boss. We took care of it."

I furrowed my brow. "And the girl? Did you make sure she understood the message?"

I could imagine a sly grin spreading across Octavio's face. "Oh, yeah. We paid her a little visit at the store where she works. It clears that she would be laying her death bed if she ever tries to act too smart. But..."

But what Octavio?

Honestly, boss I don't think the girl is fully aware of her father's past or his connection in your father's assassination. She looks pretty naïve, lost and completely taken aback by our statement and action, about her father being a murderer.

"Well then, I shall make sure to see that on my arrival in Mexico. Her father was the guilty one but unfortunately she'll just have to pay for that. Gather every information you can, find out about her including her family, friends, everything. Hopefully, I'm able to deal with Guzman here and be home soon," I told Octavio. "Good job, fella. You have done well job. We have other business to attend to."

I disconnected the call and gave the phone back to Pablo. "Any news from Sam yet?"

"He is recruiting and setting his team up. Would take a strategic plan to bring down a man like Guzman," Pablo retorted.

Then I guess our mission here is accomplished, for now at least.
