Chapter 118 - Chapter 118: Prank

Leonardo and Hugo squeezed through the crowded hall, walking while searching for Jeremy's figure. But there were people everywhere within sight, and finding one specific person wasn't that easy. In the end, Leonardo had no choice but to give up and followed Hugo to the restroom. Sure enough, right in the corner by the bathroom door, there was a box filled to the brim with toilet paper rolls.

In Halloween pranks, toilet paper is an absolute must-have. The party organizers had prepared it early on.

This was Hugo's first time taking part in a Halloween toilet paper prank. He wasn't sure how many rolls would be appropriate to take, or whether he should consider the size of the tree in front of the house. But he didn't hesitate for long. Excited, he picked up two bags of toilet paper twenty rolls in total—surely enough to cause some real chaos.

Leonardo, standing beside him, was clearly a veteran. He glanced at Hugo and said with a chuckle, "Someone's in trouble tonight." Then Leonardo also grabbed two bags of toilet paper and immediately prepared to head outside. But just as he was about to take his first step, Hugo yanked him back, causing Leonardo to stumble twice and crash into the wall. He blurted out, "What the hell are you doing?"

Hugo, however, wasn't in a rush at all. He peeked outside. "You're planning to just walk out like that and tell everyone you're going to cause trouble?" Clearly, pranks like this weren't meant to be done in front of crowds. On the contrary, the more people who saw, the easier it was to give the game away. Especially today, with a lot of parents around it wasn't wise to be so blatant.

Leonardo realized his recklessness, straightened up awkwardly, and said, "I only remembered to stay alert while making a getaway, but forgot that a good start is just as important." He walked up beside Hugo and also peered outside. Right away, he spotted Alan Thicke, who played the father Jason in the show. Leonardo quickly pulled his head back. "Looks like you know what you're doing too."

Although Hugo had never participated in Halloween pranks before, that didn't mean he was clueless. Hugo chuckled twice. "I'm not familiar with the roads around here. Do you know any back doors?" Being directionally challenged, Hugo was self-aware enough not to try leading the way.

"Of course. Follow me." Leonardo's bright blue eyes looked at Hugo, gleaming with excitement and joy.

The Leonardo in front of him was completely different from the brooding "Leo" of the post-21st century. His eyes brimmed with youthful energy and playful light, no gloom, sorrow, or inner conflict. There were no deepening forehead lines or that characteristic frown. A fresh and youthful spirit danced lightly at the corners of his mouth.

Hugo followed Leonardo as he opened the side door of the hall and quietly slipped away from the noisy crowd in front. Each of them dragged two large bags of toilet paper, stepping on the damp grass as they left Burbank High School. Looking back, in the pitch-dark night, the cluster of noise and vibrant lights formed an oval-shaped glow, like something out of a sci-fi novel a surreal world full of unspeakable serenity and calm.

Just one block away, the residential area decorated with jack-o'-lanterns came into view. But there was no one on the street at this hour, which made Hugo frown. "No one out asking for candy?" Logically, the street should be bustling with kids going door to door, dressed as little ghosts floating in the pumpkin-lit night. That was the Halloween Hugo had pictured.

Leonardo couldn't help but laugh. "You don't know what time it is? The kids should be home by now." He pointed to a house's porch nearby. "See? You can still spot scattered candy over there."

Hugo paused, trying to recall how long he had been at the party. It was already past eleven, maybe even later so what Leonardo said made sense. Most kids had gone home. The few still out were probably plotting their own pranks.

"Which house should we pick?" Leonardo pointed at the rows of houses ahead and let Hugo decide.

Hugo didn't think too much. "Where are we standing now?" After all, pranks are meant to be random. If you start carefully picking targets, it loses the spirit of the game.

Leonardo looked at the lawn beneath their feet. Behind them stood a tall sycamore tree. He and Hugo exchanged a glance and then grinned. "Bad luck," he said, referring to the unfortunate homeowners.

Hugo shrugged. "You never know what'll happen on Halloween." Then, without further ado, he opened both bags and dumped out all the rolls of toilet paper.

Leonardo followed suit, while Hugo scanned the surroundings and whispered, "If we let our guard down now, we're screwed." No one likes waking up to find their lawn trashed with toilet paper. These pranks weren't exactly welcome.

Hearing this, Leonardo instinctively looked around too, but his hands didn't slow down. "Then we better move faster." The longer they took, the more likely they'd be caught.

Soon, the entire lawn was littered with toilet paper. The black-green grass contrasted sharply with the white paper. Just imagining the prank about to unfold made Hugo weirdly excited. He grabbed a roll, tore open the end, and threw it toward the tree branches. Unsurprisingly, it didn't catch and simply fell straight down. The long tail of paper soaked in the humid air and drew a gentle arc as it landed.

Seeing Hugo's clumsy attempt, Leonardo nearly burst out laughing but quickly covered his mouth to avoid alerting the house's residents. "Hugo! Of course it won't work like that." His voice was low, but filled with amusement that was impossible to hide.

Hugo was clearly inexperienced. So he turned to watch Leonardo. Leonardo tore open a roll, inserted his left index and middle fingers into the tube, and used his right hand to pull out a long stretch of paper over ten feet long.

Leonardo showed it to Hugo, then tossed the roll upward. The unrolled paper trailed behind like a comet's tail, rising slowly. When the roll passed over the branch and started falling, the paper tail caught on the branch, creating a cascading curtain of white.

So that's how it worked. If the tail wasn't long enough, even if the roll passed over a branch, it wouldn't catch and stay up there.

This time, Hugo made sure to pull out a tail over twenty feet long, fearing it wouldn't stick again. Then he tossed the roll upward. But it got stuck between the branches and didn't fall just hung there. Hugo's expectant expression instantly froze.

Seeing this, Leonardo finally couldn't help it and burst out laughing, though he remembered to be quiet. His laughter echoed muffled in his chest, sounding both ridiculous and funny. "At least... at least it stuck," Leonardo tried to comfort Hugo. But the moment he said it, he found it even funnier.

Hugo's mouth twitched, and he picked up another roll of paper, repeating his previous actions. But before tossing it this time, he took two steps forward and looked around carefully, choosing a branch with fewer twigs. Then he weighed the roll in his hand and threw it upward with force. The toilet paper, trailing its white tail, traced an arc in the darkness, beautifully cleared the branch, and then gracefully descended, its long tail fluttering. The roll, pulled by gravity, landed heavily on the lawn.

"Yeah!" Hugo jumped up like a child, as if he had just accomplished something incredible, causing Leonardo beside him to laugh heartily and even clap twice in celebration.

But the loud sound immediately echoed through the empty street, emphasizing how quiet the area really was. The echo startled both Hugo and Leonardo, and they quickly covered their mouths, fearing they had alerted the homeowner. Fortunately, after scanning the surroundings, they confirmed there was no movement. Their eyes met, and they burst into stifled laughter.

The two didn't hesitate any longer and got to work, hanging roll after roll of paper on the branches. Soon, a lush sycamore tree had been transformed into a curtain of toilet paper, with white tails fluttering gently in the breeze, creating quite the spectacular scene.

"Didn't think pranking could be so tiring," Hugo said with a low chuckle as he continued to toss rolls upward. His right arm was already sore. Though he said that, his hands didn't slow down and he quickly threw up the last two rolls. Now skilled, Hugo could handle two rolls at once with no problem.

After they had tossed all the rolls up, they looked at the massive white sycamore, and a sense of accomplishment welled up inside them. Just as Hugo and Leonardo were about to leave, they heard rustling footsteps coming from the street corner not far away. The two instinctively wanted to hide inside their "paper curtain cave."

But then Hugo saw who was approaching three young people, each carrying two bags of toilet paper. Apparently, they were fellow pranksters. Hugo immediately grabbed Leonardo and smiled at the three newcomers. Both sides saw each other and even nodded in mutual acknowledgment. Then the three continued on, while Hugo and Leonardo tiptoed off toward Burbank High School.

Once they were farther away, Hugo turned back for another look at the masterpiece he and Leonardo had created. The beautiful paper curtain swayed gently in the wind, a breathtaking sight. One could imagine that when morning came, this place would be transformed into a "forest of white willows"!

Hugo beamed with a wide smile, then suddenly started jogging, leaving Leonardo behind. Leonardo called out after him, "Hey, Hugo, hey…" But Hugo didn't stop. He turned around with a big grin and waved for Leonardo to catch up.

However, Leonardo's voice floated over faintly, "You're going the wrong way…" The "Flash" in front instantly froze in place.
