"I really don't know why I agreed to your request. I must be insane." Charlize sat in the passenger seat, looking at the costume she was wearing with a helpless expression.
Ever since Alex received the Halloween party invitation from the "Growing Pains" crew, everyone had been eagerly preparing for the event. Originally, Joseph didn't really want to go, but under Hugo's persistent persuasion, he eventually agreed. As for Charlize, she had firmly refused from the very beginning. However, Hugo and the others still went ahead and bought her costume, which made Charlize curse fiercely, but in the end, she still went along with them.
It was clear that although Charlize was complaining, the faint glimmer of excitement in her eyes revealed her hidden anticipation. Whether she liked it or not, attending a party she had never experienced before naturally brought a sense of curiosity and thrill, and Charlize was no exception. This was precisely why Hugo insisted on buying the costume even though he knew Charlize would refuse.
"Hugo, say it again—this wasn't your idea." Charlize glared fiercely at Hugo, who was sitting in the middle of the back seat, almost gnashing her teeth. "I want my Wonder Woman!"
Hugo shrugged. "Technically speaking, it was the store clerk's idea. You know, there weren't many costumes left in the store. It wasn't easy to find a suitable one." But judging from the way Alex's face was on the verge of bursting into laughter, things weren't as simple as Hugo made them seem.
Charlize was currently wearing a proper nun costume, styled exactly after this May's hit film "Sister Act." This loose outfit not only completely concealed her curvy figure, but the oversized headpiece kept sliding down and blocking her eyes. Going to a party dressed like this clearly made her the person everyone would steer clear of.
"Hey, don't be too upset. At least you have a beautiful pair of high heels," Hugo leaned forward, resting his hands on the shoulders of the two front seats and pointing at Charlize's orange pointed high heels. As soon as the words came out of his mouth, Charlize rolled her eyes at him.
"Wanna try them?" Charlize said darkly. These shoes were far from high-end and extremely uncomfortable, making it difficult even for her battle-tested feet to walk properly.
Hugo quickly waved his hands. "No, no thanks. I'm quite satisfied with my sneakers. Very satisfied." Hugo hurriedly leaned back against the backseat cushion, acting like he dared not provoke Charlize again. On both sides, Alex and Kal were struggling hard to hold back their laughter.
Joseph soon drove through the gates of Burbank High School. The entrance was surrounded by pumpkin lanterns, all sorts of spooky sculptures, spider webs, and more. Not to mention the costumed crowd filling every corner of sight.
After searching for fifteen minutes without finding a parking spot, Joseph had to park the car in a narrow passageway, which was nearly full as well. Clearly, the place was exceptionally crowded tonight. Only then did Hugo and the others get out of the car, taking in the noisy and festive scene with a slight feeling of "Where should I even start?"
To prepare for tonight's party, the five of them had put in a lot of effort. Besides Alex dressed as Spider-Man and Charlize as a nun, Joseph as Batman and Kal as Iron Man were quite on point. Only Hugo's costume puzzled the others he had actually chosen The Flash. Compared to the other superheroes, while The Flash was indeed one of DC's most frequently appearing heroes after Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman, his fanbase wasn't as massive.
Looking at Hugo now in a scarlet foam muscle suit with yellow shoe covers, a red helmet on his head, and two cheap yellow lightning bolts that looked more like angel wings than anything else it was just ridiculous. Compared to Alex's red bodysuit, Hugo looked like he was wearing some low-quality armor, clumsy and silly. Plus, Hugo had covered a third of his face, making it hard for anyone to recognize him. But to be fair, the comedic effect was top-notch. One glance, and you'd laugh every time.
Sure enough, Charlize, despite being annoyed, couldn't help laughing again when she looked back at Hugo. "Hugo, are you sure that chest muscle is doing anything for you?" The foam muscles in Hugo's suit were basically just air. A light push would sink your whole hand into it without any resistance.
Hearing this, Alex immediately played along, raising his hand toward Hugo's chest but then suddenly slipped, acting like he lost balance and was about to fall mocking how fake Hugo's "muscles" were. His exaggerated motion even made passersby burst out laughing.
Hugo didn't mind at all and even struck a running pose like The Flash, saying seriously, "You'll never catch me!" The Flash's biggest superpower was super speed. After saying that, Hugo dashed off into the crowd.
Of course, Hugo wouldn't tell them that he chose The Flash because he remembered watching "The Big Bang Theory" in the 21st century, where the four male leads all dressed as The Flash for a costume party. Seeing four red Flashes standing together was hilariously over the top. So when Hugo saw the costume, he decided without hesitation.
To Hugo, people who went to costume parties dressed as "princes" or "princesses" were absolute narcissists. Who goes to a costume party thinking they're a super handsome royal or an incredibly gorgeous queen, then naturally becoming the king or queen of the ball? That only happens in fairy tale movies. If you're going to a costume party, you've got to go all in otherwise, what's the point of dressing up?
So Hugo was very pleased with his Flash outfit especially when the laughter of his friends confirmed his success.
"Let me introduce you all Ashley Johnson," Alex excitedly introduced Hugo and the others. "She's the one who invited me. That's how we got to attend tonight's event. Man, this is such a big family. If you miss it, you'll miss out on a ton of fun."
"Hey, mind if I call you Christine?" Hugo smiled. Ashley had been playing the grown-up youngest daughter Christine in "Growing Pains" since 1990. He didn't expect that Alex's friend from auditions was not just a minor character but part of the main cast. Hugo then extended his right hand. "If you don't mind, of course."
"Of course, getting a hug from The Flash—many people would be jealous of me." Ashley shook Hugo's hand, then gave him a big hug. Since Hugo's face was mostly covered by his mask and the costume was so exaggerated, she had no idea he was actually the recent trending personality. In fact, most people there didn't recognize him either. "Compared to you guys, I'm really not committed enough today. So disappointing." Ashley pointed at her fairy costume and frowned. "Isn't this a little too lazy?"
"Oh, I wouldn't call it lazy just terrifying," said Alex. With how much he cared about Halloween, Ashley's effort truly let him down.
But Hugo laughed heartily. "If you want to turn as many heads as we do, then yeah, you're gonna need to try a bit harder." Then he turned toward his friends, "You've probably already seen our group Batman, Iron Man, and... Sister Dolores!" Hugo's introduction made Ashley turn her attention. Joseph and Kal were still a bit stiff—not because of Ashley but because their suits restricted their movement, so they just waved briefly. Charlize, on the other hand, despite her earlier complaints, was now the most into the spirit.
Charlize lifted her nun robe and deliberately struck a seductive yet absurdly exaggerated pose, then lowered her voice to imitate Whoopi Goldberg's raspy tone and said, "Hey, young lady." Her tone even carried a playful inflection.
The comedic effect was astonishing it left everyone dumbfounded.
"Hey, Sister Delores, you're just… so sexy," Ashley said, admiring Charlize's long, slender legs in amazement.
Charlize calmly let her nun robe fall back down and winked at Ashley. "I did my homework today." As if hinting at all the fussy prep work she had done shaving, moisturizing, and so on. This witty comeback earned a round of applause.
"Leo, Jerry, come over I want to introduce you to some new friends," Ashley called out to two young men walking by.
The two young men turned around with beaming smiles. The one on the left was dressed in a Three Musketeers costume, while the one on the right wore a full suit of samurai armor. Ashley smiled and introduced them, "These are some friends I just met. This is Jeremy Miller, and this is Leonardo DiCaprio."
Jeremy played the youngest son, Benjamin, in the show, and Leonardo played the adopted son, Luke both were regular cast members on the show.
After everyone exchanged greetings, Leonardo said cheerfully, "Superheroes, that's really such a great idea! But why no Wonder Woman or Spider-Man?"
"Hey, I'm right here," Alex said sadly, raising his hand. "I'm Peter Parker." Even though he held a white, detachable bug-catching web, no one recognized him as Spider-Man. It was incredibly frustrating.
"Are you serious? I thought you were, like, the Human Torch or something," Leonardo exclaimed in amazement, while Jeremy burst out laughing beside him.
Just then, Hugo jumped in and teased cheerfully, "Then what are you supposed to be one of King Arthur's knights? I don't think taping a cardboard box to yourself makes it armor." That instantly sent everyone into a fit of laughter including Jeremy, who laughed so hard that the feather on his Musketeer hat fell off, and the cheap feather split into shreds on the spot.
