Chapter 10 - The black girl on the dance floor

Friday night finally arrived, and Linda was beyond excited to attend the party she had been looking forward to all week. She had spent hours getting ready, carefully putting on her outfit, doing her makeup, and styling her hair in loose. She slipped on her heels, grabbed her clutch, and double-checked herself in the mirror. She took a deep breath and waited for Alex and Sophia to arrive.

As she waited, she heard the sound of a car outside. She glanced out the window and saw a sleek, silver Honda Civic parked outside her apartment. She grabbed her bag, locked her apartment, and headed out to meet her friends. Alex and Sophia were waiting for her in the car, already grinning from ear to ear.

"Hey, Linda! You look stunning!" Alex exclaimed, opening the door for her. Sophia nodded in agreement, "Yeah, you're going to turn heads tonight!" Linda smiled, feeling a bit self-conscious but happy about the compliment. She slid into the backseat, and they set off towards the party venue.

As they drove, they chatted about everything from music to their plans for the night. The car ride was filled with laughter and conversation, and before she knew it, they arrived at the venue.

When they got to the party, the music was pumping. The Deejay was playing, getting everyone in the mood. The place was crowded and lively, with some people dancing and others chatting over drinks. As they emerged from the car, Linda felt a bit nervous, her stomach fluttering with butterflies. Sophia noticed her unease and took her hand, saying reassuringly, "Everything's alright, just have fun." Linda smiled, feeling a bit better, and the three of them made their way into the party.

As they entered, the loud music and laughter enveloped them. Alex immediately started dancing, drawing Sophia onto the dance floor. Sofia gestured for Linda to join them, but she playfully laughed it off, shaking her head with a smile.

Linda headed to the table to grab a drink, leaving Sophia and Alex to dance to the loud music. As she served herself a drink, a familiar guy walked up to the table and served himself as well. When he turned around, their eyes met, and Linda's eyes widened in surprise.

"Julian?!" she asked, hardly believing her eyes. Julian's face lit up with recognition, and he smiled. "Aren't you Linda?" he asked. Linda nodded.

Julian's gaze swept over her, taking in her stunning dress. "You look beautiful, Linda. That dress really suited you," he said. Linda smiled, feeling a flutter in her chest. "Thanks, Julian. You look handsome too," she replied, noticing how dashing he looked in his sleek black tuxedo with a crisp white shirt and a bow tie.

As they stood there, exchanging pleasantries, the music changed to a slower song. Julian glanced at the dance floor and then back at Linda. "Would you like to dance?" he asked. Linda hesitated for a moment, unsure if she should leave her friends. But Sophia and Alex seemed to be having a great time, and Julian's charming smile was hard to resist.

Before she could respond, Julian added, "Just one dance? I promise I'll make it worth your while." Linda's smile grew, and she nodded, feeling a sense of excitement. Julian took her hand, and they made their way to the dance floor.

As Julian and Linda danced, their synchronized movements captivated the crowd. Some onlookers were shocked by Linda's impressive dance skills, with a few whispering in amazement, "I didn't know a black girl could dance like that." Others nodded in agreement, impressed by her poise and rhythm. The crowd's surprise slowly gave way to admiration, with some even pulling out their phones to record the pair.

Sofia and Alex, who had been watching from the sidelines, exchanged impressed glances. "Wow, Linda's got moves!" Alex exclaimed. Sofia nodded in agreement. "I know, right? She's a great dancer!" Alex wispered smiling, "You're made of wonders, Linda!."

As Linda finally noticed the crowd's attention, she felt a surge of embarrassment. She abruptly stopped dancing, said "Excuse me," and quickly made her way off the dance floor, leaving Julian looking slightly bewildered.

As Linda rushed off the dance floor, Julian quickly followed her. "Linda, wait!" he called out, catching up to her near the refreshments. Linda turned to him, still feeling a bit flustered. "Hey, are you okay?" Julian asked, concern etched on his face. "Yeah, I'm fine," Linda replied, trying to brush it off.

Julian smiled and took a step closer. "You were amazing out there. I had a great time dancing with you." Linda smiled back, feeling a bit more at ease. "Thanks, I had fun too." Julian's eyes sparkled with interest as he asked, "Would you like to grab coffee sometime and get to know each other better? I really like you" Linda hesitated, feeling a bit taken aback. She didn't expect Julian to fall for her so easily.

"Julian, you're really sweet, and I've enjoyed getting to know you tonight," Linda began, trying to be kind but clear. "But I have to be honest, I just see you as a friend. I hope you understand." Julian's face fell, but he nodded graciously. "Yeah, I understand. You're an amazing person, Linda. I'm just glad we got to dance together."

Linda smiled, relieved that Julian wasn't too upset. "I'm glad too. You're a great dancer." They chatted for a bit longer. As they talked, Sofia and Alex approached them. "Linda, you were incredible!" Sofia exclaimed. Alex added, "Told ya. Heads did turn. "

Linda laughed and Julian smiled too, seeming to shake off his disappointment. The group chatted and laughed together, enjoying the rest of the party.

After a while, Sofia and Alex said goodbye to Julian and Linda. "We'll be waiting outside," Alex said, smiling and nodding at Linda before heading off with Sofia. Julian watched them leave, then turned back to Linda.

As Linda and Julian discussed happily, Ava, Julian's sister, approached them with a big smile. "Linda, it's great to see you again!" Ava chimed in, "At the mall, right?. You and my brother bumped into each other. I was there, remember?."

Linda smiled and said. "That's right. It's nice to see you both again." The three of them chatted for a bit, catching up and sharing laughs.

As they talked, Julian listened in, seeming to enjoy the conversation despite his earlier disappointment. The evening drew to a close, and Linda said her goodbyes.

After the biding Ava and Julian goodbye, Linda approached her friend. She got into Alex's car, where Sofia and Alex were waiting. "So, what happened with Julian?" Sofia asked with curiosity etched on her face. Linda filled them in on the conversation, including Julian's confession and her friendly rejection.

Alex and Sofia exchanged surprised glances. "You're kidding, right?" Alex said. "Julian's one of the most popular guys in school!" Linda playfully rolled her eyes. "I know, but I'm just not interested in him romantically."

Sofia and Alex looked at each other, still seeming shocked. "Linda, you're passing up a great opportunity!" Sofia exclaimed. Linda smiled patiently. "You guys are supposed to be supporting my decisions, not questioning them."

Alex and Sofia exchanged glances again and then turned back to Linda "Okay, okay. We respect your decision. You must have your reasons," Alex said. Linda smiled, feeling appreciated. "Thanks, guys. That means a lot to me."

With that, Alex drove them to their homes, chatting about other topics along the way. After dropping Sofia off, Alex took Linda home, and then headed back to his own place.
