Chapter 3 - Chapter 2 : Masks and Secrets

The morning light filtered softly through the sheer curtains of Aria's apartment, casting a gentle glow over the scattered pages of her notebook. The city hummed below, but inside, silence reigned. Aria sat curled on the edge of her worn leather couch, her hands wrapped tightly around a steaming mug of coffee. The events of last night replayed in her mind like a haunting melody she couldn't shake.

Jace Walker.

The name alone stirred a complicated mix of emotions — curiosity, bitterness, and something dangerously close to fascination. She'd met him at the gala, the man who was whispered about in every corner of the city — a billionaire playboy with a reputation that made headlines and shattered hearts.

Aria took a slow sip, her fingers trembling slightly. This wasn't just a chance encounter for her. It was the opening move in a carefully planned game — one she'd rehearsed countless times in her mind. Tonight, she would learn everything she could about him. She had to.

Her phone buzzed on the coffee table, snapping her from her thoughts. The screen lit up with a message from Emma.

"Be careful. He's not what he seems."

Aria's lips pressed into a thin line. Emma's words were meant to warn, but also to remind her why she was doing this. Because Jace wasn't just a man she wanted to expose — he was the reason her life had fallen apart.

Her jaw clenched. She swallowed the bitter taste of old memories and forced herself up. No more hesitation.

At the café downtown, Aria sat at a corner table, laptop open and fingers poised over the keyboard. The chatter of morning customers blurred into background noise as she focused on her research. Every detail about Jace's businesses, his social circles, and his past relationships was potential ammunition.

Her phone vibrated again — a text from an unknown number.

"You don't know what you're getting into."

Aria's pulse quickened. She stared at the message, the warning sending a shiver down her spine. But instead of fear, it stoked the fire in her belly. She had a purpose. A reckoning to face.

Her phone rang suddenly, startling her. The caller ID was blocked.

"Hello?"

A low voice answered, "Aria Blake. I know who you are."

Her heart pounded, but she kept her voice steady. "Who is this?"

"There are things you don't understand. Be careful who you trust."

The line went dead.

Aria blinked, shaken but resolute. Whoever this was, they knew something. But she wasn't about to back down.

Across town, Jace Walker lounged in his office overlooking the city skyline, swirling whiskey in a glass that caught the late afternoon sun. His phone lay on the desk, the screen showing a missed call — from his cousin Noah.

He pressed the call button.

"Noah, I want a full report on Aria Blake," Jace said without preamble. "Everything. Social media, past, connections — I need to know who she really is."

Noah's voice was cautious. "You sure, Jace? She's not just some fan or socialite. She's complicated."

"Exactly," Jace said. "And I don't like complications."

Noah agreed to dig deeper, promising discretion.

Jace leaned back, a strange tension knotting his chest. There was something about Aria — her confidence, the way she looked at him like she saw through his façade — that unsettled him. He hated feeling vulnerable.

Later that evening, Aria stood before her bedroom mirror, adjusting the neckline of her dress. She was preparing for another gala, another chance to get closer to Jace. But this time, the stakes felt higher. She had uncovered fragments of his past — whispered scandals, broken promises, and secrets that could shatter his empire.

Yet, as she studied her reflection, a question gnawed at her: Was she chasing revenge, or something else?

Her phone buzzed with a new message — a photo. Jace, arms wrapped tightly around a woman Aria didn't recognize, their smiles too intimate to be innocent.

A sharp pang of jealousy twisted inside her, but she swallowed it down.

This was war.

When she arrived at the gala, the atmosphere buzzed with power and privilege. Jace was already there, effortlessly commanding the room. Their eyes met across the crowded floor, and he gave her a slow, knowing smile.

"You're persistent," he said when they finally spoke.

Aria's reply was cool but honest. "I don't give up easily."

Jace's gaze softened for a moment before a mischievous spark returned. "Maybe you're not what I expected."

Neither of them knew it yet, but the game had only just begun. In the tangled web of secrets and lies, trust would be the hardest thing to find — and love the most unexpected twist
