Chapter 4 - Shadows unbound

The moon hung low, a pale sickle slicing through the heavy clouds that clung to the Hogwarts sky. Seraphine moved silently along the castle's ancient battlements, the wind tugging at her robes, carrying whispers of the night's chill.

She felt the Veil Key pressing close to her heart—its warmth a slow burn beneath her skin. It thrummed with urgency, a pulse that echoed the beat of her own blood. Tonight, she would push further.

Her footsteps were cautious but determined, navigating the labyrinthine stone paths leading to the highest turret. It was there she sensed the strongest pull—a thin thread of magic tugging at the edges of her mind.

Her fingers brushed the cool metal of her wand.

She was no longer the girl who arrived at Hogwarts barely able to speak Parseltongue without trembling. Tonight, the forbidden knowledge she had buried herself in had begun to take root, blooming in shadows that curled around her like smoke.

Mastery in the Dark

Seraphine raised her wand, murmuring in a sibilant Parseltongue chant. The words slithered from her tongue like venom, curling through the night air.

"Umbra vincula solvo…"

Chains of shadow erupted from the stone beneath her feet, writhing like serpents and coiling toward the battlement's edge. The magic felt alive, responding not just to her will but to her essence—a dark tether binding her to the Veil Key, to the secrets she had unearthed.

She extended her palm, and the shadows obeyed, weaving into a living cloak that wrapped around her like liquid night.

This was power forbidden.

Power dangerous.

Power intoxicating.

She closed her eyes, feeling it pulse, the cold thrill of the shadows whispering promises only she could hear.

Suddenly, a noise—a sharp crack from behind.

She whirled.

Confrontation

Standing there, framed by the cold light of the torches lining the battlements, was Harry Potter.

His wand was drawn, pale fingers steady but his face tight with surprise—and something sharper. Suspicion.

"Seraphine," he said, voice low and clipped. "What are you doing out here?"

Her cloak of shadows rippled with her movement, dark tendrils curling into the air like smoke from a dying fire.

"Exploring," she replied smoothly. "Or would you prefer I wait for your permission?"

Harry's jaw tightened, eyes flicking between her wand and the swirling shadows.

"Exploring? You've been sneaking off for weeks, tampering with magic you don't understand."

"Is that so different from you?" Her voice was cold. "Running headfirst into danger, chasing secrets you're not ready for?"

Harry stepped forward, voice hard.

"This isn't the same."

She smiled—a slow, dark smile that didn't reach her eyes.

"Isn't it? You broke into the Department of Mysteries, saw the Veil. I'm just doing what you can't."

"You're playing with forces you can't control. You could hurt yourself—or worse, someone else."

She took a step closer.

"Maybe that's the point."

Harry's wand was up before she finished.

"Expelliarmus!"

The spell shot toward her like a silver bolt.

Seraphine twisted, casting her own spell.

"Tenebris vinculum!"

Chains of living shadow erupted, twisting and weaving like serpents.

Harry dodged, narrowly avoiding the grasping darkness.

He fired back, curses ripping from his lips.

"Stupefy!" —a jet of red light that exploded against her cloak, sending shadows scattering.

Seraphine hissed, drawing on the Veil Key's power.

"Umbra nox!"

The night thickened around them, swallowing the battlements in a void of darkness.

Harry's wand glowed faintly, struggling to pierce the black.

"Lumos!" he commanded, but the light was dim, fading.

"Can't hide in the dark forever, Seraphine."

She stepped from shadow to shadow, a phantom among phantoms.

Her voice dropped low, almost a whisper.

"Vipera evanescens!"

A serpent formed of pure shadow darted toward Harry's throat.

He spun, slicing the air with his wand.

"Finite Incantatem!"

The serpent vanished.

Harry charged, wand slashing.

Seraphine dove back, countering.

"Serpensortia!"

Black snakes erupted from the stones, weaving between Harry's legs.

He jumped, firing a blast that shattered the stone beneath her.

She landed, breathing hard.

"You're reckless."

"Not more than you."

Their duel grew more violent, spells and curses flashing through the air in deadly bursts.

Suddenly, Harry sent a bolt of green fire that scorched her side.

Pain flared.

She roared, and the shadows surged like a tidal wave, pushing him back hard against the wall.

He gasped, struggling to stand.

Seraphine pressed forward, wand aimed at his chest.

"Stay down."

Harry met her eyes, fierce.

"I'm not giving up on you."

"Then you don't understand what I've become."

The tension snapped.

A crack in the battlement stones glowed—a dark pulse rippling through the magic.

Harry's eyes widened.

"Seraphine, this isn't you."

Her voice trembled, caught between fury and something else.

"Maybe it is."

She unleashed a final spell—an explosion of darkness that hurled Harry across the stones.

He hit the ground hard but scrambled up, breath ragged.

Before either could act again, a sharp voice cut through the chaos.

"Enough!"

Professor Snape emerged from the shadows, eyes flashing.

The duel halted.

Seraphine's cloak of shadows dissolved reluctantly.

Harry lowered his wand, breathing heavily.

Snape's gaze pierced them both.

"Your powers are growing," he said to Seraphine, "but raw strength is not mastery."

She met his eyes steadily.

"I'm learning control."

Snape's lips twitched.

"Power without discipline is a curse."

He turned to Harry.

"And you, Potter, must learn that not all battles are fought with spells."

Seraphine and Harry exchanged a final look—equal parts challenge and understanding.

The night had changed them both.
