Chapter 2 - The Tests

A few hours later, after a battery of tests and emergency preparations, I was taken to the hospital's underground level, accompanied by my parents and a team of specialists. We descended in a high-security elevator with thick steel walls and magnetic locks that sounded like vaults being sealed.

Dr. Meryl led us to a wide area, surrounded by reinforced containment panels, thermal sensors, and multiple cameras. On the ceiling were artificial sunlight projectors — simulators used to energize heroes with solar or photosensitive quirks. There were also metal targets, reinforced concrete blocks, and data panels displaying real-time readings.

"Welcome to the Solaris Room," said the doctor with a slight smile. "Designed to test high-energy quirks. And today… it's all yours, Revan."

I was wearing a suit made specifically to withstand my thermal emission. It was black, tight-fitting, with silver circuits that gathered data and monitored my energy levels. Even so, my body throbbed — as if the heat was always on the surface, waiting for a chance to escape.

My parents watched from a reinforced glass room nearby, along with doctors and technicians, eyes locked on every number appearing on the screens.

"Alright, Revan," came the doctor's voice over the intercom. "Let's start with something simple. Try lifting that concrete block."

I looked at the block, the size of a small car. Took a deep breath… and walked up to it. I placed my hands under the base and pushed.

Crack.

The sound didn't come from my body, but the ground. The block rose like it was made of paper… and part of the floor shattered along with it. The slab of concrete was hurled upward before I could control the motion, slamming into the ceiling with a loud crash, cracking the upper structure.

"This is harder to control than it looks," I thought, frustrated.

"Okay! Strength confirmed! Strength is… uh… well above average," said the doctor, trying to keep calm.

My face burned with embarrassment. Literally. The temperature around me rose so much the nearest panel started to sizzle.

"Revan, now try to activate your thermal vision toward the metal target on your left," she instructed.

I closed my eyes. Focused. Tried to remember the sensation from when it all began in the garden… the pressure behind my eyes, the heat…

ZWWWWOOOOOSH!

Two blazing heat beams shot from my eyes at full power. They hit the metal target, slicing through it like hot butter. The problem was—I couldn't stop. The heat kept pouring out — hitting the walls behind.

Siren.

Red lights began flashing.

"Containment ! Plasma shield !" shouted a technician.

Energy barriers rose, protecting the vulnerable areas as I desperately tried to shut my eyes. The panel monitoring my energy output collapsed. The wall behind the target was melting.

It was my father who spoke over the intercom, his tone firm but calm:

"Revan ! Son, listen to my voice. Breathe. Remember what your mom always says: you don't have to be stronger. You just need to be in control."

I squeezed my eyes shut, panting. I remembered the garden. The smell of flowers. The sound of my mom laughing. And slowly… the beams ceased.

Silence.

When I opened my eyes, the panel was black, steaming. The room… partially destroyed. The floor cracked, one wall melted, and three surveillance drones down on the ground.

The security door opened, and Dr. Meryl rushed in with two doctors. My mother and father followed close behind, relieved to see me standing — not collapsed.

"That was… intense," said the doctor, nervously smiling.

"That was a disaster…" I murmured, lowering my head.

My father placed a hand on my shoulder, still wide-eyed at the destruction around us.

"Son, you lifted a three-ton block with one hand and melted steel with your eyes. That's not a disaster. It's just… a little hard to control. But we'll help you."

My mother knelt in front of me, touching my face gently.

"One step at a time, Revan. You're strong. But this" — she touched my chest — "isn't about strength. It's about who you choose to be with that power."

At that moment, even in the middle of the chaos and destruction I caused, I realized something important.

I wasn't alone in this.

And if I had this power inside me… then I was going to learn how to control it.

The days in the hospital became a strange routine: wake up early, have a reinforced breakfast with my mom — even though she didn't need to eat — go through a flood of quick tests, and then… head down to the testing zone.

Dr. Meryl was usually already there with a tablet in hand and the tense look of someone used to working with emergencies.

"Good morning, Mr. Tanaka, Mrs. Tanaka, Revan. How are you feeling today ?"

"A little electric," I muttered, stretching. "Like my whole body is… charged."

My father laughed.

"That's because you spent yesterday absorbing artificial sunlight. You're like a little walking nuclear bomb."

My mother patted my shoulder.

"Today will be better, Revan. We're here with you."

"Let's take it slow," added Dr. Meryl. "And remember the priority is control, not strength."

1. Strength Tests

We began with strength tests. A 20-ton steel block was placed in the center of the room.

"Revan, try lifting this block with both hands. No throwing it today, please," she said, half laughing, half serious.

I approached, took a deep breath, and placed my hands under the block. I was trying to be gentle.

"Slowly…" murmured my dad from behind the glass.

"Here we go…" I whispered.

The block began to rise, creaking under the strain. But my body felt no weight at all. Then, accidentally, I took a step back — CLANG — and the block fell with a crash that shook the floor. One of the ceiling lights fell.

"Wow…" I heard one of the techs say.

"Yeah… something like that," I said, scratching my head.

"Let's reinforce the ceiling again," sighed the doctor.

2. Heat Vision

Later, I was positioned facing a titanium panel with colored targets.

"Focus on the red targets, Revan. And try… not to aim at the walls."

"I'm trying, but it's hard to think about stopping when your eyes are heating up from the inside."

"Just like in the breathing exercise. Inhale… hold… now release and aim."

ZWWOOOOSH!

Beams shot from my eyes like wild lasers. They hit the target, yes… but also pierced the panel, the containment system, and struck the back wall. An alarm went off.

"Turn it off ! Turn it off !" I yelled, squeezing my eyes shut.

It took a few seconds, but the beams stopped.

My mother was talking to me through the communicator, trying to calm me down.

"You're doing well, sweetheart. Really. Better than yesterday."

"Better than yesterday is not blowing up a wall," I muttered, sighing.

"That's progress," said my dad, laughing.

3. Super Hearing

This one was… the strangest.

They placed me in an acoustic room with sound sensors. I was supposed to try to hear what one of the technicians was saying behind several soundproofed walls.

"Revan, focus on your breathing. The hearing will try to overwhelm you, but you need to choose what you want to hear," explained the doctor.

I closed my eyes. Heard my breathing. Then… voices. Lots of voices. Hearts beating. People walking in the hallway. A nurse humming softly. The whole city seemed to pulse inside my head.

"They… they're talking about me at the front desk," I murmured.

"What ?" said my mom, surprised.

"A doctor is saying he's never seen a genetic code like mine. That it seems 'extraterrestrial'."

My dad raised his eyebrows.

"And is he wrong ?"

"Quiet. Wait…" I continued, turning my head.

"He's eating chips while saying that. I can hear the salt crunching in his teeth."

"Okay! That's enough for today," laughed Dr. Meryl. "Let's rest that head before you go crazy."

4. First Manifestation of the Freezing Breath

Two days later, it happened by accident.

During another stress test, I was carrying a massive iron cylinder that was starting to catch fire from the friction I was generating.

"Drop it ! Let it go !" shouted my dad.

"I can't ! My hand is stuck !"

It was instinctive. I tried to blow on it, desperate to cool it down.

FFFFWWWWWSSSSHHH!

Suddenly, a blast of freezing air came from my mouth. The cylinder was instantly covered in ice. The floor around it turned white. A technician slipped and fell.

"…What was that ?!" I shouted, eyes wide.

Dr. Meryl looked at her tablet, astonished.

"Freezing breath. It's the first recorded manifestation we've had. Incredible… he controlled temperature through the pulmonary system."

My mom's jaw dropped.

"You didn't know you could do that ?"

"I didn't even know that was possible !"

"Congrats, son. You just discovered another superpower with a sneeze," my dad said, laughing.

5. Discovering X-Ray Vision

The next day, a new discovery.

I was trying to practice visual focus when I commented to the doctor:

"Strange… I can see the circuits inside that panel."

"Is it broken ?"

"No… I see through it. I… I can see the wires inside."

The room went silent.

"You… can see through the panel ?" my mom asked, stunned.

"Uh… yeah ? And also…" I looked at the security wall, "I can see two guards on the other side of the room. One of them is eating a donut."

My dad let out a quiet laugh.

"Oh, don't start," I grumbled.

Dr. Meryl just shook her head, nervously scribbling on her tablet.

"He's a prodigy. But still unstable. Each power is like a volcano ready to erupt… And we need to teach him to be a lighthouse, not an explosion."

She looked at me.

"Revan… you're not just strong. You're something the world doesn't understand yet. But I know you'll learn to guide this. One step at a time."

I looked at my parents, both smiling at me.

"One step at a time," I repeated.

Even among the rubble and constant alarms, I was starting to understand:

This power was mine.

And I was going to master it.
