They all stood frozen, staring down at Elena's lifeless body at the bottom of the ravine. The shock of what had just happened filled the air, making it difficult to breathe.
"No," a voice whispered, breaking the silence. It was Daniel, Elena's brother and the other tracker on the team. "No, no, no!"
He rushed toward the edge, preparing to climb down the treacherous slope, when suddenly he stopped, his body going rigid. "Wait. I hear something. A heartbeat!"
"No, don't!" Adrien called, moving quickly to grab him by the arm.
Lucien joined in, trying to restrain the desperate man. "It's too dangerous! The rocks are unstable!"
But Daniel fought against them with surprising strength. "Let me go! She's alive! I can hear her heartbeat!"
"Daniel, please," Nessa said softly, approaching him slowly with her hands raised in a calming gesture. "Listen again. Really listen carefully."
