Chapter 1 - The Void Break

Three years ago something amazing, and terrifying, happened. In the beginning nobody understood, even to this day we still don't understand what caused it. We called it the Void Break, gates to another world began opening up all around the world, at first civilians were not allowed near these gates as decided by the world governments, but as time went by they began opening these gates to the public. The world governments warned everyone before they attempted entering these gates that what lies on the other side is dangerous and we needed to take caution before entering, otherwise we might not make it back alive. For some reason, nobody under the age of eighteen could enter these gates. These were not rules set by the governments, the gates just would not allow anyone under the age to enter, like a barrier of some kind.

I've been told that beyond these gates lies the Void realm, a world full of creatures we could only dream of, a world where growth, skills, and strengths would only increase by hunting these creatures. For some reason hunting these creatures granted item drops and Void points. Void points were like skill points in a video game, you used them to, for lack of a better description, level up and increase skills. In certain cases, hunting these creatures could grant certain skills, equipment, items, weapons, and even magic abilities. It truly was like a video game brought to life, and this is the year that I, Tetsuya Daisuke, turn eighteen, and become eligible to enter The Void.

My name, as stated previously, is Tetsuya Daisuke, an eighteen year old boy with nothing special about me. I grew up in the slums, an orphan before I could even speak my first words. A group of kids, too young to be raising kids of their own, took me in and took care of me. They gave me food, although it was minimal due to the struggling economy within the lower class of citizens, clothes that were obviously handed down, and shelter (if you can call an abandoned theater worn by time a shelter). Although it was rough growing up and struggling to get by day by day, it was still home. Something I always felt blessed to have after seeing how many others were left to the streets. Poverty was an understatement for the slums I grew up in, but the government only assisted the middle and upper classes of society, the rest of us were left to fend for ourselves, feeding off of scraps. But after all these years, I could only hope The Void would offer a better existence than the one I've lived for the last eighteen years.

As I stood before the Void gate for the first time, I couldn't help but stare in amazement at the rippling vortex that stood in front of me. Paralyzed by the fear of the unknown and the shock that this day was finally here, I almost couldn't bring my feet to obey me, but slowly I felt my legs move step by step, getting closer and closer too the gate in front of me. I could feel it drawing me towards it, like a destiny that was calling just to me, until I was only a step away from entering this exciting new world, and a new beginning.

I reached my hand out to touch the gate and ripples formed across it like the smooth surface of a glassy lake. I felt no resistance pushing against me as I held my hand to it. I could hear the others behind me telling me to hurry up and enter already. As I glanced behind me I could see the impatient faces of others that had just come of age urging me to go through the gate already. I took one last look at the line behind me and the guards posted beside the gate before I finally took that last step into the unknown.
