Chapter 223 - Chapter 223: The Difference Between Fireflies and the Bright Moon

Kitagawa Gen no longer felt like wasting words.

In a certain sense, these people were already as good as dead.

A few words were enough to wound their pride; to truly drive them into despair, fists would be the deciding factor.

Of course, he had noticed something else.

'The power of the Tenseigan is flaring, converging on a single person… Tenseigan Chakra Mode?'

His perception was sharp—after all, it was a power of the same origin.

Beyond that, there was another faint sensation, something mysterious and hard to grasp.

"It feels… like someone is watching me…"

He wasn't sure whether the feeling was accurate, but he would rather believe it was true.

The moon was a sinister place—not only the site of Ōtsutsuki Kaguya's seal, but also the resting ground of Ōtsutsuki Hamura.

And besides…

Whether Hamura's soul had truly dissipated was still uncertain.

A roaring surge of chakra howled through the air. In the next instant, a man wreathed in green light suddenly burst down from the sky.

His entire body was wrapped in green chakra, identical to the Ōtsutsuki Toneri Gen remembered!

But there was a difference—this man's chakra burned like fire, and in Gen's eyes it was even clearer.

'The flame of life was never strong to begin with… and this chakra mode is burning his very life away?'

Gen nodded knowingly. He understood this man was fighting with everything he had.

"I don't care who you are!"

Even as Gen pondered, the Third Elder roared, his body surging with restless chakra as he glared at him.

"Even if it costs me my life, I'll take you down!"

"Remember this—my name is Ōtsutsuki—"

[Boom—!]

But before he could even finish speaking, his vision blurred.

In the next instant, a massive force slammed square into his chest, hurling him like a cannonball.

The ground thundered. Smoke billowed, and a deep crater yawned where he struck. Yet in the blink of an eye, the Third Elder was already back on his feet.

Only to find—Gen was already right before him.

"So fast?"

The Elder's ferocious expression froze. Staring at the suddenly appeared figure, he instantly lashed out with a fist.

[Swish—]

Gen's figure flickered. In almost the blink of an eye, the Elder's punch hit nothing but air—and then another immense force struck him.

Again, he was sent flying like a cannonball, gouging a massive scar across the ground.

"What kind of speed is this?!"

After two consecutive blows, that ghostlike speed left the Third Elder's eyes wide.

His Byakugan had been locked on Gen the entire time, yet he couldn't catch even a trace of his movements.

"This is Tenseigan Chakra Mode—so why is it like this?!"

The mode was already his ultimate gamble. The raging chakra pouring into his body was burning away what little life force he had left.

And yet, after just two exchanges, he realized—not only could he not land a hit, he couldn't even see the opponent clearly!

"He's using Tenseigan Chakra Mode as well—so why is the gap between us so vast?"

The Third Elder could not comprehend it. He had barely rolled a few times and steadied himself when, in the blink of an eye, he saw Kitagawa Gen striking again.

There was a faint smile tugging at Gen's lips, yet his eyes were cold—like those of someone gazing at the dead.

At once, a surge of shame and fury welled up in the Elder's chest. Forcing himself upright, he bellowed: "Even if I die, I'll drag you down to hell with me!"

[Boom—!]

His fists swung wildly, a shroud of green light quietly forming around him.

It was as if endless streams of green chakra had taken shape, whirling into gusts of fist-born gales that poured across the sky toward the onrushing Gen.

"Hm?"

Gen arched a brow. This style seemed somewhat similar to the Hyūga's [Eight Trigrams Palms].

But there was also a tremendous difference—this man's [Eight Trigrams Palms] looked far more intricate than the Hyūga's version.

'And the power is greater… don't tell me—'

Suddenly, Gen's thoughts clicked into place.

He had always felt that the [Eight Trigrams Palms] were a youthful, simplified version of the [Eighty Gods Vacuum Attack].

Ever since the Hyūga came into the shinobi world, Gen's impression of them had been… underwhelming.

'Could it be a degeneration? And beyond that, they must have lost much of the knowledge stored here on the moon as well?'

If that was true…

At the thought, Gen's eyes lit up. His gaze shifted toward the man before him, also wreathed in Tenseigan Chakra Mode, and his expression subtly changed.

He remembered clearly—inside Hamura's temple lay an immense library. Perhaps he really could find something of value there.

Silver Wheel Reincarnation Explosion!

In a flash, Gen vanished from sight. The Totsuka Sword in his hand burst into dazzling brilliance.

In an instant, a violent gale condensed around the blade.

The next moment, the sword's edge came slashing down, unleashing a torrent of destructive force that seemed intent on obliterating all in its path!

[Boom—!]

The hurricane winds collided with the gale-born fists, the spiraling storm carrying unstoppable momentum. Almost instantly, the fists were torn apart.

The hurricane's eruption only grew fiercer. The Elder's fists stood no chance—no matter how desperately he swung, it was useless.

"How… how could this be?"

Feeling the gale press closer and closer, the Third Elder's face turned ghostly pale.

The Tenseigan chakra was already burning away his life. He had thrown everything into this fight—so why was the gap between them still so vast?

"Watch out!"

From the sky, a furious shout suddenly rang out, jolting the Elder's mind back to clarity.

He frantically forced his chakra to settle, retreating backward with all his strength—but still, the sweeping hurricane grazed his body!

"Ahhh!"

A scream tore from his throat. His arm had vanished silently into the storm's wake.

Only the delayed, searing pain remained—along with ragged, labored breaths and a face twisted in horror.

And when he saw Kitagawa Gen descending slowly from the heavens toward him, that terror only deepened.

"Is that all?"

Gen's calm eyes swept over him, his voice faint as he asked.

[Buzz—]

Yet before the Elder could even respond, Gen's Totsuka Sword was already swinging again.

The dazzling sword light swept across once more—this time even faster than before.

"Ahhh!"

Blood spattered as the Third Elder's chest was carved open by a long wound, deep enough to expose bone.

Had he not dodged in time, half his body would have been cleaved away. Yet already, Kitagawa Gen stood before him again.

In an instant, a powerful suction seized him, dragging his entire body helplessly into Gen's grasp.

Gen's hand clamped firmly onto his head. At once, the Elder's thoughts grew chaotic—he could feel the information within his mind leaking away.

"You—"

The Third Elder could not struggle at all. Even among Tenseigan wielders, there were vast differences.

He knew it clearly now—the gulf between himself and this Ōtsutsuki Genshiki was far too great!

"Hush."

No matter how he thrashed, Gen only gave a cold shake of his head.

"Stay quiet. Consider it the last shred of dignity you'll be granted."

Dignity?

Hearing those words, the Elder's teeth nearly shattered from the force of his bite. Was this what passed for dignity?

He glared death at Gen—then suddenly froze. For a brief moment, his expression shifted.

"Dignity, you say?"

His face twisted into a ferocious snarl as he let out a roar.

"Then I'll show you… what true dignity is!"

[Boom—!]

In that instant, his chakra erupted recklessly, his life force burning even fiercer.

...

"Forgive me…"

Inside Hamura's temple, the Great Elder let out a heavy sigh.

But immediately after, his chakra too flared to life.

The giant Tenseigan still pulsed and writhed, straining as though it might break free of his control.

Yet he ignored everything else. Even as his body trembled violently, even as blood seeped from his flesh, he clenched his teeth and forced it down by sheer will.

"Now! Activate, Tenseigan!"

With his roar, the struggling Tenseigan suddenly burst forth with a colossal brilliance.

That brilliance condensed into a vast pillar of light, blinding and radiant against the dark of night.

Carrying an aura of unmatched power, it crashed down upon the place where Gen and the Third Elder stood!

[Rumble—!]

The ground quaked and the mountains shuddered.

Tangible waves of energy surged outward like a raging tide, sweeping across everything in an instant.

As the terrifying force spread, the moon's interior—once plunged into extreme darkness after the artificial sun had failed—was once again illuminated in searing light.

But this time, there was no calm sky, no gentle breeze. Everywhere the eye could see, vast swathes of ground were ripped apart and flung into the air.

In the distance, entire islands disintegrated in an instant. In the blink of an eye, they were swallowed by the raging waves—waves that both evaporated the sea and devoured the shattered landmasses.

The earth caved in again and again. The entire moon trembled ceaselessly, the sight visible even from the shinobi world!

...

"Damn it, what the hell is going on?"

"Has the moon gone mad, or—"

In Konohagakure, more and more people had turned their eyes skyward, witnessing the moon's state.

And not only them—the entire shinobi world felt the anomaly.

"Look! What is that?!"

Suddenly, someone sensed it. They pointed at the moon above, their voice shaking with disbelief.

As their cry rang out, countless others raised their heads toward the starry sky—and in the next instant, they all froze.

They could faintly see it: a colossal pillar of light roaring forth from within the moon!

Countless meteorites were flung outward, scattering in every direction at that very moment…

"Is it over…?"

Inside the moon, the Great Elder panted heavily. His body had shriveled completely.

Already at the end of his life, to wrest control while simultaneously forcing the Tenseigan to erupt—this was a death sentence.

But if by doing so he could eliminate one of the celestial beings, prevent the sealed one from returning, and keep Toneri safe…

"Then everything is worth it!"

Still gasping, he gazed at the collapsing interior of the moon, murmuring those words—when suddenly his breath seized.

"Worth it?"

A soft, airy voice brushed against his ear. And then, silently, his body was sliced clean in two.

He watched himself fall to the ground, blood spilling everywhere. And there—standing behind him—was Kitagawa Gen.

"You…"

His mouth opened, struggling to form words, but no sound emerged.

All that remained in his eyes was despair. Such a difference… truly, the gap between fireflies and the bright moon.

Gen, however, simply walked straight toward the massive Tenseigan, now dim and fading. As he passed the fallen Elder, he gave him nothing more than a cold glance.

"How pitiful. You couldn't even amuse me."

But as those words left his lips, his gaze flicked casually around him.

That feeling of being watched—it was only growing stronger.
