Chapter 225 - 221: I prefer nothing

"Don't worry, I'm just more comfortable this way. I mean, I like these clothes better than any dresses," the former detective tried to convince me.

"Why do I have these vague doubts?" I looked at the girl, narrowing my eyes in disbelief.

"I don't know," she shrugged.

"What's wrong?"

"You'd like it better if I wore something like this," she said, pointing to Harley Quinn, who was dancing in front of the stage in a classic harlequin outfit. She wore her traditional red and black comic book costume and a cute cap with bells. She performed complex acrobatic somersaults and entertained the guests with her cheerful laughter. Sometimes, she would hint at a dark past, just like now, and she would say theatrically: "There's a jester on stage, and there's no end to laughter! I swear, I'll make hearts glad! But to avoid shock from laughter, put your money in the bag! Ha-ha-ha!"

Um, apparently, she said this during the robberies. Now, though, it sounds a little inappropriate... But who cares! I'm happy, we're happy, and most importantly, she's happy.

"I guess not," I shook my head in response to Renee's question. "That outfit wouldn't suit you. You either need a suit or nothing... I prefer nothing."

"Oh, how shameless," the head of security laughed cheerfully. "What else should I expect from a narcissistic egotist like you. Remind me what you said to my father when we met?"

"Your daughter doesn't need happiness, she needs me!"

"Ha-ha, that was something else…"

"Hey, your father simply declared that I am not a match for his daughter, that I cannot give her the happiness that his precious sunshine deserves. You see, with my profession as a showman, I will not be able to pay you the attention you deserve."

"And was he wrong? You really do pay less attention to me than I expect. However, my father doesn't know that this is not because of your work, but because of other women. I wonder what he would have said then?"

"I would have handled it…"

Yeah, it was an unforgettable evening - meeting my girlfriend's parents. We went to Renee's home right after a belated Christmas. Her parents wanted to see me as soon as possible and confirm that the rumors about their daughter's sexual orientation were nothing more than silly gossip. We managed to convince the elderly couple of this, and they were overjoyed at the good news. But then things went much less smoothly.

Her father and I immediately began to bicker politely. No matter how hard I tried to appear nice, no matter how much I expressed respect and talked about my own virtues, her dad found his precious daughter too precious for someone as unreliable as me. We ended up arguing for an hour and, by the end of the verbal battle, we reached a consensus.

Although he approved of our relationship, he tried to show with his whole appearance that he was still dissatisfied. However, this was just a pretense. I didn't miss the glimpse of satisfaction in his eyes about his future son-in-law. As for Renee's mother, I'll note that we had a warm relationship from the very beginning.

She couldn't be happier with her daughter's choice and repeatedly defended me from her grumpy husband. All in all, it was a fun time. It's also worth mentioning that a few days ago, almost immediately after the aforementioned meeting, Montoya became a super soldier.

It's not right for my company's head of security to remain a mere human. Renee didn't refuse the serum injection; in fact, she was all for it, believing she wouldn't have been able to handle the responsibilities assigned to her normally. To improve her combat skills, she, along with Victoria and Silver, joined the training sessions led by my bodyguards.

Unlike the girls, Montoya had quite a bit of combat experience. She was, after all, a former Major Crimes Unit detective. Renee began training, essentially, not so much to improve her skills as to regain control of her powers, now as a supersoldier.

Everyone who took Erskine's serum suffered from a loss of control. Well, almost everyone... I don't think Batman is worth mentioning; that monster is beyond common sense, but if there's someone else who's beyond common sense, it's Harley Quinn! Both literally and figuratively.

Surprisingly, the mad girl didn't experience any discomfort after the physical leap. As if this was how it was supposed to be... The only explanation for this phenomenon can only be the girl's insanity, which, most likely, is what enabled her body to adapt so quickly to the new changes. Who would have thought that the now-former villain Harley Quinn would become a supersoldier?

Bruce stubbornly insisted that giving the serum to a criminal whose reformation was still in great doubt was the stupidest decision. But I didn't listen to him... I simply couldn't do otherwise. If I refused the girl, she would doubt me, and worse, doubt herself, her choice. I couldn't betray her trust.

Besides, there's one important fact here: the Joker. Who knows what crazy idea might pop into the head of this insane psychopath. I personally doubt he will adequately handle the news of his breakup with Harley.

Rather, he'll try to get her back and use force, because mere words of flattery won't be enough this time.

Previously, Quinn would come running at her sweetie's beckoning and forgive all his antics, but now, she has me, and the girl's priorities have changed dramatically. Because of this, I hastened to protect her from the impending threat, and I believed the best way to do so was to increase her own powers.

This is the most reliable way to protect her, since I can't be around all the time. Hiding is also not an option: a crazy clown could find her even from underground, with his intuition.

Therefore, it would be better if she could stand up for herself and teach her former sweetie a lesson. I would like to see the Joker's face when he sees Harley's transformation... Although, no, I still would have preferred if they had never met. But my wishes in this world are the last thing on my mind. I left Renee and told her to enjoy the party, not stand guard all night. Did she listen to me? The question is rhetorical...
