When winter truly sets in and the thermometer drops below freezing, numerous outdoor ice rinks quickly spring up in major cities. Gotham City comes alive on such days, insistently calling those who prefer to stay indoors to take to the streets.
Dazzler, despite her many responsibilities and constant workload, also expressed a strong desire to have some fun on the frozen water. And this on the day of her performance on Gotham City's main stage, where over 200,000 spectators eagerly awaited her!
"Alison," I turned to the girl gracefully gliding on the ice, "You remember that you have a concert today, right?"
"Obviously... But there is still time before the start."
"That is how it is…"
"Alex," Blair interrupted me, skillfully braking. "I understand everything... But let me enjoy this moment. You know, in the past, I always had to overexert myself. It's not easy to organize your own performances when you're alone."
"You're not alone anymore…"
"Exactly! And it's so great... I finally don't have to worry about every detail and even have a little rest before the concert. I couldn't even dream of something like this before, but now... There are people to whom I can open up my true self and it's... peaceful," spreading her arms to the sides, she seemed to enjoy the feeling of freedom given to her. "And all this thanks to you, Alex."
"Glad to be of service," making a semicircle near Blair, I pushed off and began to pick up speed. Alison kept up with me, quickly catching up.
When we first met, she could barely stand on her feet, but now her grace on the ice is the envy of all the figure skaters in the world.
"Where are you going?" the girl asked cheerfully. "Do you want to slip away from me?"
"When did I ever slip away from the pursuit of a beautiful lady?"
"All the time!" Blair reproached with feigned irritation. "After that walk on the rink, you never asked me out again. So I had to take matters into my own hands."
"So that's why we are here now and not in the waiting room? Ha-ha, I wonder what everyone who is now impatiently awaiting the start of the performance would think if they knew that the main star of today's show, instead of preparing for the concert, was having fun on the ice plain in the center of the city."
"I suppose that would have been the end of our peaceful outing then," Blair laughed, slowing down her gliding speed. "It's good that everyone thinks we're backstage right now… We don't have to worry about being discovered at all. I mean, who would have thought it was Alex Reath and Alison Blair skating here right now, and not just unknown people like them? It's simply unthinkable, right?"
"Right, but that's exactly what's happening here…" We stopped at the fence to catch our breath. Alison, despite her enviable gliding skills, seemed to deliberately fail to brake in time and flew straight into my arms. I gently took the girl's hands and looked into her eyes.
"Alex," she said after a short silence. "I'm grateful to you for everything you've done for me. You're the first person who... when he found out I was different, didn't turn away from me, on the contrary, he took me in, treated me kindly and gave me the opportunity to enjoy the life I live as myself. It's not easy, wearing a mask day after day, and feeling like your true self is slowly slipping away. It's hard when you're a different person... or human? I used to think that being a mutant was a curse…"
"Alison," I interrupted my companion. "There's nothing wrong with being a little different from everyone else. Who decided that being a mutant is bad? People? You, as a representative of another race, are not obliged to take their words at face value. Not everything they say is true. People are simply always afraid of those they do not understand and who are different from them. And I must do everything in my power to ensure that in the future, people and mutants can live in peace and understanding. It will not be easy, but I am sure that it is we who must do this - their idols, those who are closest to them…"
"You are right, and I believe you. You have never deceived me yet."
"Hey, I am an ardent opponent of lies and deceit!"
"You know, I can't even imagine how my life would have turned out if I had not trusted you at our first meeting, refused your offer and set off on a solo voyage again…"
"Ha-ha, you shouldn't think about it," I put my arm around the girl's waist. "I would, in any case, have persuaded you to join me. Nick Fury himself would envy my eloquence."
"Well, you really know how to talk, but not how to act!" Alison pulled me tightly to her and kissed me tenderly on the lips. I wasn't at a loss, because I'd been waiting for this moment all evening… No, I'd been waiting for this moment since the first day we met.
Even though we were outdoors and people were skating around us, their skates sparkling, we paid no attention to them, enjoying each other's warmth. We kissed as if we wanted to regain all the opportunities we'd lost during the testing of our feelings in one go. Her sweet, slightly cool lips completely intoxicated me, making it seem like I'd left this world for five whole minutes.
"I think we've taken too long with the kiss," I said softly in her ear when we broke the kiss. "We need to hurry: it's time to open the concert."
"Yes, let's hurry," Blair abruptly pulled me along with her and shouted joyfully. "Today will be the most dazzlingly cool show with the most dazzlingly happy girl! And then," she suddenly stopped, looked at me slyly, and whispered, "then we'll hurry to your place…"
