Chapter 8: The Truth Behind the Mask
The rain had finally stopped.
Clouds still hung low over Seoul, leaving the streets damp and silent. Hana stared blankly out of the classroom window, absentmindedly tracing circles on the fogged glass.
Something wasn't right.
For the past week she had poured every ounce of herself into protecting Minji. She walked her home after school. She ate lunch with her. She even convinced two teachers to keep an eye on her.
Yet...
Nothing had changed.
No.
That wasn't true.
Something had changed.
The bullying had become... quieter.
Almost as if someone had deliberately lowered the volume.
The anonymous posts had stopped.
The whispers had faded.
It wasn't over.
It felt...
paused.
"Hana."
Jungho's voice snapped her back.
She turned to see him standing beside her desk, his expression unusually serious.
"We need to talk."
---
The rooftop was empty except for the three of them.
Cold wind swept across the concrete.
Jungho leaned against the fence with his arms folded.
"I've been thinking."
Hana smiled weakly.
"You always are."
"I'm serious."
"So am I."
"No," Jungho said quietly. "You're hoping."
His words stung.
She looked away.
"What are you trying to say?"
Jungho took a deep breath.
"We've been chasing Minji for nearly two weeks."
"Because she's the target."
"Is she?"
Silence.
Seojun looked between them.
"Hana has evidence."
Jungho nodded.
"I know."
"And the detective agreed."
"Exactly."
Hana frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Jungho looked straight at her.
"When has he ever disagreed?"
Neither of them answered.
"He never questioned us."
"He never challenged our conclusions."
"He never asked us to verify anything."
"He simply..."
Jungho's voice grew quieter.
"...pointed us toward Minji."
The wind howled between the buildings.
For the first time...
Hana couldn't immediately argue.
Seojun shook his head.
"Maybe he trusted our judgement."
"Maybe."
Jungho sighed.
"But real investigators don't do that."
"They question everything."
"They doubt everything."
"They don't encourage assumptions."
Hana's heartbeat quickened.
Images flashed through her mind.
Every meeting.
Every conversation.
Every time she proudly presented evidence...
The detective had smiled.
Every.
Single.
Time.
Without questioning it once.
"...No," Hana whispered.
---
That evening.
The detective's office.
The hallway was darker than usual.
Only one flickering bulb illuminated the cracked walls.
Hana knocked.
No answer.
She knocked again.
Still nothing.
Jungho reached for the handle.
Locked.
"He's probably out."
"No."
Jungho frowned.
"He always said he'd be here after six."
Seojun looked through the dusty window.
"I can't see anything."
Jungho tried the handle once more.
Nothing.
A strange feeling settled over the three of them.
Hana stepped back.
"This doesn't feel right."
---
An elderly shopkeeper from downstairs looked up as they entered.
"Oh."
He smiled politely.
"Looking for the detective?"
"Yes."
"Have you seen him?"
The old man scratched his chin.
"Not today."
"When did you last see him?"
The smile slowly disappeared.
He thought for a long moment.
"...Actually..."
"I don't remember."
Jungho frowned.
"What do you mean?"
"I thought he was here yesterday..."
"No..."
"Maybe last week?"
The old man laughed awkwardly.
"Funny."
"I can't seem to remember."
Hana exchanged a glance with Jungho.
The uneasiness grew heavier.
---
"We're going to the police."
The words left Jungho's mouth before anyone else could speak.
Hana blinked.
"The police?"
"If something's wrong..."
"We need answers."
Seojun hesitated.
"...Wouldn't that expose us?"
Jungho looked at him.
"If I'm wrong..."
"We apologise."
"If I'm right..."
He never finished the sentence.
None of them wanted to.
---
The police station buzzed with quiet conversations and ringing telephones.
Compared to the detective's gloomy office, it felt painfully normal.
An officer greeted them politely.
"Can I help you?"
Hana stepped forward.
"We're looking for Detective Kang."
The officer typed something into the computer.
His expression changed.
"...Detective Kang?"
"Yes."
"We've been working with him."
Silence.
The officer slowly looked up.
"...Working with him?"
Jungho nodded.
"He has been helping us investigate a student's death."
The officer didn't answer.
Instead, he stood.
"I'll be back."
He disappeared through a door marked AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY.
Minutes passed.
None of them spoke.
Seojun's fingers tapped nervously against his leg.
Hana could hear her own heartbeat.
The officer returned.
This time...
Another older officer walked beside him.
Gray hair.
Tired eyes.
He studied the three teenagers carefully.
"You said Detective Kang has been helping you?"
"Yes."
"For weeks."
The older officer remained silent.
Then he asked softly,
"...Are you certain?"
Hana frowned.
"What do you mean?"
The officer looked toward a nearby wall.
Framed photographs hung neatly in a row.
Officers receiving medals.
Graduation ceremonies.
Retirement celebrations.
And...
One photograph stood apart.
A black ribbon was tied around its corner.
The older officer walked toward it.
Slowly removed it from the wall.
Then placed it on the counter.
Hana's breath caught.
The photograph showed Detective Kang.
Smiling warmly in his uniform.
The very same man.
The same eyes.
The same face.
The officer lowered his head.
"I'm sorry."
His voice was barely above a whisper.
"Detective Kang passed away..."
He paused.
"...Twenty-eight days ago."
Everything stopped.
Hana stared at the photograph.
No.
That wasn't possible.
They had met him three days ago.
Seojun had dinner with him.
He had smiled.
He had laughed.
He had...
"...No."
The word escaped Hana's lips before she realized she'd spoken.
Jungho stepped backward.
The folder slipped from his hand.
Thud.
Papers scattered across the station floor.
Seojun stood frozen.
His face had gone completely pale.
The officer looked between the three of them.
Confusion slowly replaced sympathy.
"If Detective Kang has been dead for almost a month..."
He swallowed.
"...then who exactly have you been meeting?"
To Be Continued...
