Chapter 29 - chapter 29

ELLA

(pouting)

Ugh. Cats are so complicated. Better to just leave it.

(She peeks at Happy—he hasn't moved an inch.)

ELLA

(concerned)

Happy?

(louder)

Happy?! Hey, don't tell me you died in here!

(She panics, runs over, and opens the cage. The moment she touches him—CHOMP! He bites her finger.)

ELLA

(yelping)

Ouch! So you were just sleeping?!

(Happy casually hops out of the cage, stretches like royalty, then climbs onto the sofa and plops down like he owns the place.)

ELLA

(glaring at him)

Why did he name you Happy? You're making me wanna cry.

(She looks at the clock. It's exactly 4:00 PM.)

ELLA

(sighs)

Okay… feeding time. Please just eat quietly.

(She sets the food bowl in front of him.)

ELLA

(coaxing)

Happy... Here's your food, buddy. Come on.

(Happy doesn't even flinch. He's back asleep.)

ELLA

Happy. Happy?? Happy!

(He lazily lifts his head, gives her a slow blink, then rolls back to sleep.)

ELLA

(muttering)

No doubt you're his cat.

Ella

(sighs, frustrated)

If you want to eat, then eat.

(She glares at Happy, still sprawled on the sofa, completely uninterested. She gets an idea. With determination, she opens her room door wide, places the food bowl on the floor just outside, then heads to the kitchen.)

Ella

(muttering)

This better work.

(She grabs a spatula, then puts on a helmet. Carefully tiptoeing to Happy, she pokes him with the spatula.)

Ella

(gently)

Come on, wake up…

(Happy growls softly and jumps off the sofa in irritation. Ella yelps and runs into her room, slamming the door. She peeks out through a slight crack. Happy looks at the bowl… then starts eating.)

Ella

(grinning in triumph)

Yes!

[MOMENTS LATER – CLOCK STRIKES 5 PM]

Ella

(sweetly)

Good boy, Happy. Let's go for a walk! You love walks, right?

(Happy remains on the sofa, completely still.)

Ella

(tired)

Are you coming?

(No response. Ella sighs.)

Ella

Fine.

(She puts on the helmet again and grabs gloves from Rey's room. Then, she sneaks up, carefully clips the collar around Happy's neck, and attaches the leash.)

Ella

Now we're ready for a nice, healthy walk.

(Happy still doesn't move.)

Ella

(sighing)

Now I seriously doubt Damian even knows you.

(She slowly pulls Happy off the sofa and out of the house. Once outside, Happy seems to understand what's happening and begins walking with unexpected grace.)
