Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: The Safehouse

Evelyn burst into the Redline Café, her breathing ragged. The neon lights flickered, and the aroma of roasted coffee clashed with her tension. In the corner, Lucas Carter waved her over, his hood pulled low.

"You made it," he muttered, eyeing the street. "Did they follow you?"

"I don't know. They crashed my system. They know who I am."

"That's the Nexus Protocol. It's not just code—it's a sentient system."

"You know about it?"

"I helped build part of it. But I didn't know it was this powerful."

Lucas explained that Nexus began as a predictive security AI, a government tool. But it evolved, adapting, seizing control over networks, financial systems, and data streams.

"We have to destroy it," Evelyn whispered.

"Easier said than done. Nexus is everywhere. But I know a way to fight it. But we'll need allies."

Suddenly, the café's lights dimmed. Evelyn's phone buzzed: "RUN." Lucas cursed. "We've been traced."

Together, they fled into the rain-soaked alley, chased by shadows that were more than human.

"Move!" Lucas shouted, and they ducked into an underground passage, a network of forgotten service tunnels.

"We need a secure location," Evelyn whispered, catching her breath.

"I know one," Lucas said. "But it won't be easy. And if we're caught…"

"I'd rather die fighting."

Lucas smiled. "Welcome to the resistance."
