Chapter 48 - Chapter 48: Godzilla

===November 1 1994===

As usual Harry and Hermione are the first ones into Ancient Runes. "Missus Potter, I must say someone looks like they're glowing today." Cheshire says.

"I am," Hermione says. "Yesterday was eventful."

"You mean the tournament?" Cheshire asks.

"That's one thing." Hermione says.

"Does it involve where you were when they called Harry's name?" Cheshire asks. "Rumor has it you were in the infirmary."

"Yes, as a matter of fact it does." Hermione says. "Looks like I'm right behind you."

Cheshire gives her namesake grin. "Congratulations!"

"Thank you."

"That does remind me." Cheshire says. "I was wondering if you two would be the godparents for us."

"We'd be honored." Harry says. "I plan on asking Sirius to be Godfather, but would you like to be Godmother?"

Cheshire nods. "Of course! Sirius is a good man, he regrets missing the chance to really be a Godfather to you. You giving him a second chance is a wonderful idea."

"Glad you think so too." Harry says.

===November 24 1994===

The day of the first task has arrived. Thanks to Hagrid they knew that the task would have something to do with nesting dragons. Harry and Hermione were up late last night working out a plan. They had decided that Harry would do the first task. Hermione wasn't showing from her pregnancy yet, but she would have occasional spikes in her magic. Plan A was a long shot, but if it worked the task would be easy. Plan B, was much debated but they finally settled upon Hermione shrinking Harry's Firebolt and bringing with her so he could summon it if necessary.

So Hermione is up in the stands with the rest of their friends while Harry and the other champions were given their instructions. They then selected miniature dragons from a bag, these miniatures had numbered tags on them. Of course Harry drew the most dangerous, the Hungarian Horntail, and he drew to go last as well.

Harry finds a place to sit and wait his turn. He's wearing a loose fitting set of robes that conceals the basilisk hide armor he's wearing over Malachi's training clothes. He closes his eyes. 'Ready?' He asks Hermione.

'Ready.' Hermione replies. She feels a rush of magic as Harry pulls on their bond.

'It worked.' Harry says. His eyes still closed he now sees the field from Hermione's perspective.

They watch as the Swedish Short-Snout is brought out along with her nest. Cedric comes out and hides behind a large boulder, he quickly transfigures another boulder into a Labrador. The dog distracts the dragon, during the distraction Cedric runs in and grabs the egg.

'Brilliant use of Transfiguration.' Hermione says. 'I could easily do something similar.'

'If your magic were to surge when you did it you could end up with a massive version of Fluffy.' Harry points out.

'True.' Hermione admits. They watch as Fleur charms her dragon, but apparently it doesn't completely work as the dragons blasts her with fire setting her robes alight right as she gets her egg.

'I hope Fleur isn't badly burned.' Harry says.

'I think it just got her robes.' Hermione replies.

'I'm really starting to wish we could have found a way to cancel this whole tournament.' Harry says.

'Me too.' Hermione says.

Next Viktor comes out and shoots his dragon in the eyes with a curse. Unfortunately the curse causes the dragon to thrash around breaking her actual eggs.

Hermione can't help but put her hand on her belly and think about the life growing in her when it happens. 'I can't believe they let the eggs get destroyed like that.' Hermione says sadly.

'I know, it's not right.' Harry replies.

'You're next.' Hermione says.

'I got this. Though I have a plan C you won't like if I can't outfly it.' Harry says.

'I understand.' Hermione replies.

"Potter!" Ludo Bagman calls. "You're up!"

'I love you.' Harry sends to her. Then he opens his eyes and looks at Ludo. "I'm ready."

'I love you too.' Hermione replies.

Harry gets up and follows Ludo to the challenge area. Thanks to his bond with Hermione he has seen it from her perspective. Now he sees it from the ground and it seems so much bigger.

As soon as he steps out onto the field the Hungarian Horntail blasts fire at him. Harry dodges crouching behind the same boulder Cedric had. He pulls out his wand and points it at his neck. "Sonorus!" He holds the wand to his neck and slips into parseltongue. "Excuse me great mother."

The dragon stops and looks in Harry's direction. "Show yourself!" The dragon commands in parseltongue.

Harry steps out from behind the boulder, his left hand open and up, his right holding his wand to his neck. "I mean you no harm." Harry says.

"Put your wand away, I'll hear you fine."

Harry slowly puts his wand away. "Better?"

"What do you want human?"

"Your handlers have tricked you. Among your eggs there's a false egg." Harry explains. "I wish to retrieve that egg, and only that egg."

"How do I know you speak the truth?" The dragon asks.

"Sniff me, you will find my mate's sent. She carries our child. As a soon-to-be father I would never harm a child. " Harry says.

"Step closer." The dragon instructs and Harry walks towards her. "Stop!" Harry complies and the dragon bends her head down and sniffs Harry. "Yes, I smell her. I also smell you are wearing the hide of the king of snakes."

"I was forced to slay the basilisk. I honor its death by using every part of it." Harry says.

"Then why do you conceal its hide beneath your robes?"

"I don't wish to boast about killing any creature. If I were to wear its hide openly I would be doing just that."

"Your words make sense." The dragon says, then sniffs her nest. "I can smell something is not right in my nest. You may remove that which doesn't belong."

"I will touch only what I absolutely have to, my wand will stay put up." Harry explains. He slowly walks to the nest of eggs and carefully walks around it looking for the best access.

"You may touch my eggs if necessary. I'm not sure you can reach it otherwise." The dragon says.

"I thank you for your trust." Harry says as he carefully climbs into the nest, briefly leaning onto an egg as he does. He reaches the golden egg and lifts it up. "I have it."

The dragon bends down and sniffs him and the egg. "Yes, that is not mine. You may take that."

Harry carefully climbs out of the nest then bows to the dragon. "I thank you, honorable Mother."

"You are welcome, human." The dragon replies then when Harry starts to walk away she speaks again. "WAIT!"

Harry immediately turns back around and kneels. "Yes, great mother?"

The dragon pulls a few of her scales off and lays them in a stack in front of Harry. "A gift, to you and your mate. Congratulations!"

Harry looks at the scales, each one of them is the size of a serving platter, if not bigger. He places the egg on top of the scales then stands and grabs the entire stack before carefully walking towards the judges.

The crowd goes wild once they realize that he completed the task so effortlessly. He walks over to the judges table. "How'd I do?" Harry asks with a smirk.

"I've never seen anything like it." Ludo says. "Your one spell was cast on yourself!"

"You talked to the dragon in parseltongue." Dumbledore says. "Brilliant."

"How did you know the dragon could speak parseltongue?" Igor asks.

"One entry in one book said dragons were related to snakes. So I took a gamble." Harry replies.

"What if that had failed?" Maxime asks.

"I would have summoned my broom, it's a Firebolt, its top speed is higher than the recorded top speed of any dragon. Using my natural abilities on a broom I would have outflown the dragon and eventually swept down and grabbed the egg at top speed. Easier than grabbing the snitch."

"You could outfly a dragon?" Igor asks.

"I'm reasonably sure I could. I have a natural affinity for flying, but if I couldn't outfly the dragon I would have flown it away from the crowd and cast a powerful stunning charm at its eyes. At the very least it would incapacitate the dragon long enough for me to get the egg, unfortunately as it'd be aerial there was a significant risk it would result in the dragon's death."

"Sounds like you came in with several very well thought out plans, and went for the less likely to work, but most peaceful of solutions." Ludo says. "I'm ready to score, the rest of you?"

The rest of the judges nod and present their scores. Harry's flawless execution of the plan resulted in a perfect score across the board.

===November 29 1994===

Harry and Hermione walk into the Ancient Runes classroom. Hermione takes her seat as Harry goes up to Cheshire.

"Mister Potter, can I help you?" Cheshire asks.

"I was wondering if you could get the dragon scales I was given last week to Malachi. I'm sure he could work something out for us." Harry asks.

"Of course, I'd be happy to pass them along." Cheshire answers.

Harry hands her a small bag. "Here you go."

Cheshire examines the bag. "Impressive spellwork, extension charm?" She looks at Hermione.

Hermione nods. "Of course."
