Because they lost time playing mahjong, by the time the group arrived at the beach, it was already dusk.
The sky had turned a dim gray, and at the edge of the sea, the last traces of sunlight were fading quickly. The promenade beside the beach had already lit up, illuminating the surroundings brightly.
The evening sea breeze blew head-on, making Ning Chu shiver. Her petite body instinctively slipped behind Wen Yang, using him to shield herself from the biting wind.
"So cold…"
In May, the daytime temperature here could reach around 25–26°C, and at night it would drop to just over 20°C. Normally, a light jacket would be enough—but being so close to the sea, she could clearly feel that it was colder than usual.
Yan Xinya's enthusiasm, however, was completely unaffected. The moment she got out of the car, she excitedly grabbed Lily and rushed into the promenade.
"Where can we rent a tent? Let's hurry and get one!"
Dragged along, Lily nearly stumbled and fell, helplessly trying to keep up with the wolf girl's urgency. Xi Xi watched their backs, then glanced at the two couples behind her. Without much hesitation, she quickened her pace to follow them.
The promenade was built along the beach. From here, it only took two steps down to reach the sand.
Ning Chu curiously looked around at the unfamiliar surroundings and muttered,
"It's not much different from the beach back home~"
She looked up at Wen Yang, only to find him staring blankly at the coastline.
"Never seen it before? Pretty, right?"
"Yeah, it's quite nice."
"When I was little, my grandpa used to bring me to the beach all the time. We'd pick up shells and crabs—could fill a whole bucket. Then we'd cook them at night. Not much meat, but it was fresh."
Holding onto Wen Yang's arm, Ning Chu chattered on, sharing bits of her childhood.
"When I was about five or six, my mom also took me camping at the beach once… I think my brother and a neighbor's aunt were there too… I don't remember clearly. I just remember it being pretty cold at night."
"Sounds interesting."
"Mmm… but later, my mom had to go work, so she rarely took me out anymore."
From that perspective, Ning Chu's lack of outings as a child was largely due to her father's sudden disappearance.
If not for that, her mother wouldn't have had to go out to work and be so busy all the time.
"How about I bring you to the beach again during summer vacation?" Wen Yang asked with a smile.
"You just want to see girls in swimsuits, don't you?"
Ning Chu glanced at him suspiciously, then shook her head.
"Forget it. I'm not interested in that right now."
Night fell quickly. Aside from the promenade area, the beach itself had already sunk into darkness. One could vaguely see the pitch-black sea, like an abyss.
The sea breeze was strong, making Ning Chu cling even closer to Wen Yang, using him as a windbreak.
The promenade was rather quiet—one could see straight from one end to the other at a glance. She soon spotted Yan Xinya again.
Jogging over, Yan Xinya noticed her arrival and excitedly pointed at the tents available for rent in a shop.
"Ning Chu! Let's rent a super big tent—five people sleeping together!"
"Uh…"
"You want to sleep with Wen Yang instead?"
Ning Chu had only hesitated for a second before the wolf girl leaned in teasingly.
"Ooh~ doing that kind of thing on the beach sounds pretty exciting~"
Ning Chu's face instantly turned red. She lunged forward, baring her teeth and claws.
"Stop talking nonsense! Why would I think about that?!"
"That's what you said last night too! And you didn't come back with Wen Yang until after midnight!"
"We were just walking around outside!"
"Yeah right, like anyone would believe that!"
After some playful scuffling, they eventually decided to rent three tents—one large and two small. Worried about the cold at night, they also rented sleeping bags.
On the beach, near the promenade, there was a designated camping area. At the moment, only a few tents were set up, leaving plenty of open space for them to enjoy.
The three tents were quickly pitched in a circle. In the center, they spread out a waterproof, fireproof picnic mat, set up a portable gas stove, and took out the pre-prepared skewers they had bought earlier.
There were actually self-service barbecue spots on the promenade, with tables and chairs set up right on the sand and plenty of lighting…
But Yan Xinya was too excited to be talked out of it.
"The fire's too small."
Sitting in front of the portable gas stove, Lily looked at the flickering flame being blown about by the sea breeze and shook her head. "Can't grill anything like this."
"How could that be?!" Yan Xinya immediately got anxious upon hearing that. She rushed over and used her body to block the wind. "Will it be better if I block it? Xi Xi, come help block the wind too!"
But when she turned her head, she saw that Xi Xi had already run off into the distance in her slippers, playing with the sand.
"What's so fun about sand? So childish…" she muttered, then looked toward Ning Chu and Wen Yang and called out, "Come help block the wind! Otherwise we won't have dinner tonight!"
"Coming."
Ning Chu wasn't too worried about dinner anyway. Right next to them was a promenade—there was basically anything you could want to eat there. The only downside was the price.
She sat down beside Wen Yang, and together they completely blocked the sea breeze, stabilizing the flame of the stove.
Only then did Lily take out a grill plate and place it on top of the stove, leisurely brushing oil onto it before laying down the marinated semi-prepared meat.
The sizzling sound of oil and the gradually rising aroma of grilled meat slowly spread through the campsite. Yan Xinya stared eagerly at the meat, urging from time to time:
"Is it ready yet? Why is it taking so long?"
"Is it done?"
"So slow…"
Lily, however, remained patient and didn't find the wolf girl annoying at all. She calmly replied, "The fire's small. No rush."
"You guys keep grilling. I'll go tidy up the tent."
Seeing that this batch of barbecue would still take some time, Ning Chu stood up and headed toward her tent.
The tent was swaying slightly in the wind, making her circle around it to check if it was firmly secured. Only after confirming did she unzip it and crawl inside.
As soon as she got in, away from the wind outside, she immediately felt much more comfortable. She plopped down onto the sleeping bag and began rummaging through her backpack.
The triangular tent wasn't very spacious—just wide enough for Ning Chu and Wen Yang to lie down, and not tall enough for even Ning Chu to stand upright.
She took out the small items she had prepared in advance: a fully charged mosquito-repellent lamp, floral water to keep bugs away, a power bank, a small desk lamp…
All of these had been borrowed from Lily's house—she hadn't spent a single cent, though she'd have to return them tomorrow.
"Isn't it a bit small?"
Wen Yang also crawled into the tent.
With his tall and sturdy build, the cramped space barely allowed him to move, forcing him to shift carefully.
"It's okay, right? Big tents are expensive~"
As she spoke, Ning Chu applied the floral water to her exposed neck and arms. "Later, give some to Lily and the others too. Don't let them get bitten by bugs."
"Got it."
"The train tomorrow afternoon at three—I've already booked the tickets."
She paused for a moment, then lowered her head, her face faintly flushed as she continued:
"I probably won't sleep well in the tent tonight… How about we go get a hotel room tomorrow morning to catch up on sleep?"
"…And also check your condition, don't end up so worn out that you can't even beat that person."
The moment Wen Yang heard that, he understood—this little succubus was under a lot of pressure and desperately needed a way to vent.
