Trapped In Paradise
Volume 2 Chapter 214 / Chapter 494: Father
Inside the familiar, old elevator, Ning Chu paced back and forth in the cramped space, her pretty face filled with anxiety and nervousness.
She stopped, facing the mottled mirror on the elevator wall, and took a comb out of her small shoulder bag to fix her hair.
It was her first time meeting her father—at the very least, she had to keep up appearances...
Wen Yang, holding fruit and milk as gifts, lowered his head to look at Ning Chu's restless state. "I doubt you'll even see him when you get home."
"True… We only have two bedrooms. There's no way he'd be sleeping in the same room as my mom…"
"Eh? What if he really is sleeping in the same room as my mom?!"
Ning Chu froze for a moment and looked up blankly.
"That's… unlikely, right?"
She scratched her head in frustration, messing up the hairstyle she had just fixed. "Anyway, we're almost home…"
The closer she got, the more tangled her thoughts became. She didn't know whether she should feel curious and expectant toward her father, or angry and upset—but one thing was certain: she was incredibly nervous.
The elevator stopped, and the metal door slowly opened.
Ning Chu took a deep breath. The emotions on her face quickly sank into her heart, replaced by a cold, distant expression—like Lily's, keeping people at arm's length.
She quickly tidied up her appearance again, then nervously glanced back at Wen Yang's tall figure.
Wen Yang simply smiled gently and nodded at her.
Instantly, Ning Chu felt much more at ease, as if a warm strength had been injected into her.
As she stepped out of the elevator, the door to her home was already open.
Perhaps having heard the elevator, Black Bean eagerly pushed open the door and peeked into the hallway. Upon seeing Ning Chu and Wen Yang, she let out a delighted cry: "Sis! Brother-in-law!"
The little cat, barefoot with her tail held high, cheered as she ran out of the apartment and threw herself into Ning Chu's arms, rubbing her face against Ning Chu's chest while making soft purring sounds like a cat.
"Ah…"
Ning Chu instinctively leaned back, a blush uncontrollably spreading across her face.
"Stop rubbing."
Her ample chest was tickled by the rubbing, and she could only push Black Bean away with a flushed face, covering her chest as she stepped back. "Go rub against Wen Yang instead."
"Brother-in-law~"
Black Bean immediately leapt into Wen Yang's arms.
"Black Bean, is there anyone else at home besides Mom?" Ning Chu asked, shrinking back slightly as she peeked inside.
"No!"
"That's good…"
She let out a sigh of relief before nudging off her sneakers and stepping inside.
As soon as she entered, she smelled a rich aroma of meat. From the kitchen came the sound of the range hood and the clatter of her mother cooking.
The familiar scent and environment relaxed her instantly. Unlike the feeling of staying with Wen Yang in their rented place, being home made her feel as if her mental age had dropped by at least ten years.
"You're back?"
"Mm!"
Ning Chu responded as she looked down. Two pairs of slippers—one big, one small—had already been prepared.
"Black Bean, don't run around barefoot outside. That's dirty—get in here!"
After putting on her slippers, she hurried toward the kitchen and peeked inside at her mother, who was busy preparing dinner.
"Mom~ what are we having tonight?" she asked eagerly.
After more than a month apart, her mother looked no different from during the New Year—still wearing that gentle smile, though there was now a hint of worry between her brows.
"Lychee pork, rib soup, sweet and sour fish…"
She busied herself as she listed the dishes, then covered the pot before turning to look at Ning Chu with a smile. "You look like you're in good shape."
Her daughter looked much better than during the New Year—rosy and glowing, with no trace of acne or dullness. Even her eyes seemed to sparkle, as if she'd been well-fed and well-rested.
"I guess…"
"I told you to take it easy. Tell Wen Yang to take care of his health, don't let him wear himself out in a couple of years~"
"Mom!"
Ning Chu shot her mother an embarrassed glare.
She couldn't exactly explain that it was she who couldn't handle Wen Yang—almost every time, she ended up passing out while begging for mercy.
If not for having something important to do today and Wen Yang holding back, she'd probably be stumbling when she walked right now.
"Alright, alright, I'll stop." Seeing her daughter blush in embarrassment, Ning Juan covered her mouth and chuckled. "Where's Wen Yang? Let me see if you've drained him dry."
Didn't you just say you'd stop?!
Right at that moment, Wen Yang arrived outside the kitchen, his arm wrapped by Black Bean.
"Hello, Auntie."
Ning Juan sized Wen Yang up from head to toe. The expected signs of weakness—unsteady steps, pale complexion, the kind of drained look someone might have after living with a succubus for over a month—were nowhere to be seen. If anything, he looked quite energetic.
Not only could he satisfy a succubus's needs, but he could also maintain a healthy body and mind.
As expected of the man her daughter had chosen.
Ning Juan smiled kindly at Wen Yang. "Why did you bring things? Next time, don't bother, Ning Xin doesn't even like fruit."
"Then I'll bring some meat next time?"
"Okay!" Black Bean immediately raised her hand high in approval.
"Dinner will be ready in about an hour. You two go rest first, don't get in the way here."
Black Bean tugged Wen Yang toward the living room. "Brother-in-law! I raised a turtle! I'll show you!"
Meanwhile, Ning Chu went straight into the kitchen, eagerly helping her mother.
Her eyes darted around mischievously as she glanced at her mother, and within minutes, she couldn't hold back her curiosity anymore.
"Mom, what are you planning to do now?"
"Are you going to divorce him? Or are you not going to stay with that uncle anymore? That'd be too pitiful for him~"
Ning Juan's face darkened, and she raised the spatula as if to smack her daughter on the head.
Ning Chu quickly covered her head in defense. "I'm just concerned about you!"
"Since when do I need you worrying about my business?" Ning Juan scolded, though it sounded more like a warning than anger. She rolled her eyes. "You'd better think about how you're going to get along with him."
"Me?"
"That's your father. What, you're not going to acknowledge him?"
Ning Chu shrugged indifferently. "It's not like he ever raised me. He didn't spend a single cent on me, does he really expect me to take care of him when he's old? I don't even know what he looks like."
As she said that, she suddenly felt a bit uneasy.
Legally speaking, even if her father had never fulfilled his responsibilities, she might still be obligated to support him in old age.
Which was just ridiculous!
Ning Chu walked back into the living room in a daze. She had thought her mother was in the worst situation—but it turned out she herself might be the one in trouble.
Judging by her mother's attitude, she had probably long prepared for divorce. But Ning Chu herself was completely unprepared.
Suddenly, there was a knock at the door.
She froze for a moment and looked up, only to see Black Bean already rushing over noisily and opening it.
Standing outside was a man about 1.7 meters tall, thin, with a full head of white hair. He wore a leather jacket, and though his face was lined with wrinkles, traces of his former handsomeness could still be seen…
At first glance, Ning Chu saw a resemblance to her older brother in his features.
This… was her father?
