Chapter 9 - [8] Passive

[Acquired Skill: Swift Strike. Consumed 3 Skill Points.]

Buzz!

[Mid-Tier Job: Sword Saint Successfully Acquired!]

Adam stared at the status panel, a mix of surprise and realization crossing his face. "As expected, the New World's job acquisition, unlike the game, works for me too."

But he lowered his head, his gaze flickering.

No [Accept Job?] prompt this time?

He'd identified two methods for acquiring combat jobs.

1. Touching job-related weapons or equipment to unlock the job.

- Pros: Easy to acquire basic jobs.

- Cons: Mid- and high-tier jobs are harder to obtain.

2. Learning skills via skill points to indirectly gain the associated job.

- Pros: Highly flexible. With a target and enough skill points, jobs can be acquired by observing others' skills.

- Cons: Jobs are automatically acquired upon learning the skill, with no option to decline, requiring caution.

Weighing the pros and cons, Adam realized that with the Genius General Job, the first method was less relevant.

He glanced back at the status panel.

After acquiring Sword Saint, his Total Level had risen to 2, and he'd gained 3 more skill points.

"Such a rapid level-up pace. No wonder some players in the game took 100 jobs." Adam muttered under his breath.

Simply taking different jobs boosted his level, tempting even his cautious nature for a fleeting moment.

"The 3 skill points per level remain consistent." He noted. "Theoretically, I could amass 300 skill points. If I lose levels upon death and regain them, could I farm skill points repeatedly?"

The thought flashed through his mind.

In Overlord's game, this wouldn't work, but in the New World, could he exploit a loophole?

He shook his head, shelving the idea. It wasn't a priority now.

Before the panel's prompts faded, Adam spent 2 more skill points to learn Instant Reflex and Fourfold Slash of Light.

He kept the remaining 1 skill point for emergencies.

His status panel now reflected significant changes.

"Only HP, Physical Attack, and Agility increase? Different jobs indeed favor different stats. Mid-tier jobs give 10 points per level; basic jobs must offer even less."

"Good thing Genius bypasses basic job requirements."

"But a mid-tier job granting a passive skill?" Adam noted the new Slash Damage effect under Passive Skills.

Up to 10% slash damage boost?

It was… decent.

Adam pondered. "What's surprising is the distinction between New World Martial Arts and job skills."

Swift Strike had clear damage and cooldown metrics.

Instant Reflex and Fourfold Slash of Light offered only basic descriptions, lacking such specifics.

"No wonder Ainz was intrigued by Martial Arts. They're a completely different system from YGGDRASIL's warrior skills."

Adam mused with a wry smile.

In YGGDRASIL, warrior skills and magic systems were somewhat distinct.

Magic Casters' spells typically had no cooldowns, consuming only mana, hence the saying, "MP is a Magic Caster's true lifeline."

High-tier magic and skills, however, often had cooldowns or other restrictions.

Warrior skills didn't use mana but had cooldowns, with some requiring MP or other conditions.

New World Martial Arts consumed Focus, but Adam's panel lacked a Focus stat. He'd need to investigate this himself.

"WHOOOOOA!"

"WHOOOOOA!"

The crowd in the stands surged to their feet, startling Adam.

He noticed several spectators beside him staring, puzzled that he remained seated.

Ahem.

Adam cleared his throat, stood expressionlessly, and blended in.

Unsure of the reason, mimicking the crowd was the safest bet.

Perhaps due to standing too quickly, he lurched forward, nearly falling.

He grabbed the shoulder of the person in front of him to steady himself.

Seated ahead was a brown-haired middle-aged man with a bushy beard, exuding a rough demeanor. The heavy grip on his shoulder felt deliberate, sparking irritation.

"What's your problem, kid?" The man growled, clenching his fist and turning to Adam.

"Uh, just lost my balance." Adam said, his face apologetic as he withdrew his hand.

"Hmph!" The man shot Adam a fierce glare, as if memorizing his face, clearly planning to settle the score later.

Adam's brow twitched.

Given his situation, he preferred to stay low-key and avoid trouble.

His stumble stemmed from his newfound strength, his body felt stronger, but he wasn't yet accustomed to it.

The moment passed quickly.

Clenching his fist, Adam felt a surge of power. "Stat increases reflect instantly in my body. It's sudden, yet feels like I've trained for years."

Looking up, his gaze cut through the crowd to the stage below.

While he'd been engrossed in his panel, Gazef and Brain had left the arena.

The crowd stood out of respect for the nobles and royals departing from the circular tower platform.

Understanding the reason, Adam remained standing with the others. Standing out now wasn't wise.

At least the nobles weren't making speeches.

He glanced at the tower platform, a touch of disappointment flickering. He'd hoped to catch a glimpse of the Golden Princess, but the platform's cover obscured everything.

The wait dragged on for a full half-hour.

Adam's mouth twitched as he took a deep breath.

The privileged elite were truly insufferable.

As the nobles finally departed, the solemn arena buzzed with chatter once more.

Most discussed Gazef and Brain's battle, with many envious that both, win or lose, had been invited to the palace by the king.

The brown-haired man turned, grinning menacingly, ready to confront the black-haired kid behind him.

But the spot was empty.

"Damn it! Slipped away that fast? Don't let me catch you!" He cursed, stunned.
