Chapter 24: Power in Numbers
Kazuki wiped the sweat from his brow, his chest heaving as the last goblin fell at his feet. The forest was quiet now, the scattered remains of defeated monsters surrounding them.
"You're getting the hang of it," Elara said, stepping forward and inspecting the fallen goblins. "Your reaction time is improving."
Kazuki nodded, catching his breath. "It's thanks to the Goblin Strength skill. I can feel the power coursing through me."
Tara leaned against a nearby tree, twirling her dagger. "Don't get too cocky, Kazuki. These are just weaklings. Real monsters will tear you apart if you're not careful."
Kazuki swallowed, a chill running down his spine. "Right. Got it."
Elara moved closer, her expression softening. "You're doing great, Kazuki. Just keep focusing on controlling the skills you absorb. Too many abilities can be overwhelming."
"Yeah," Kazuki said, flexing his fingers. "It feels... strange. Like I'm not fully in control."
Before Elara could respond, a low growl echoed through the trees. The three of them tensed, eyes scanning the dense foliage. The ground trembled beneath their feet, and Kazuki's heart raced.
"What was that?" he asked, gripping his sword.
A massive, hulking beast stepped into the clearing. Its dark fur bristled, and its red eyes gleamed with savage hunger. A Horned Bear — twice the size of any creature they'd encountered so far.
"Stay back," Elara said, stepping forward and raising her blade. "This one's too strong for you, Kazuki."
Tara smirked, pushing off the tree. "Or... it could be the perfect chance for Kazuki to test his new power."
"Are you crazy?" Elara snapped. "This thing could crush him!"
"Not if he uses his skills properly," Tara said, her eyes flashing as she drew her daggers. "Come on, Kazuki. Show us what you've got."
Kazuki took a deep breath, feeling the goblin's strength surge through him. He stepped forward, sword raised, his gaze locked onto the Horned Bear. "Alright. Let's do this."
The beast roared, charging forward with earth-shaking force. Kazuki clenched his jaw, his muscles tightening as he prepared to meet the attack head-on.
