Chapter 76 - Chapter 76: The Gathering of Shadows

In the rain-soaked lands of Amegakure, hidden amidst valleys veiled in mist and darkness, stood a towering structure carved deep into the mountain—a stronghold few dared to approach.

The sound of water dripping from above echoed through the cavernous corridors, blending with the distant rumble of thunder overhead. The air was cold, damp, and heavy with tension.

Within the heart of this secret base, a meeting was about to begin.

Dark figures gathered in a dimly lit hall, the shadows of their cloaked bodies flickering against the stone walls. Each of them wore the iconic black cloak adorned with crimson clouds—the mark of the most feared organization in the shinobi world.

Akatsuki.

A name whispered with dread. A symbol of chaos, ambition, and power.

They stood in a loose circle, waiting.

Suddenly, footsteps echoed sharply across the stone floor.

A man entered.

His presence alone silenced the murmurs.

His eyes—rippling circles of purple and black—pierced through the darkness. The legendary Rinnegan.

This was Pain.

A puppet body animated by the will of Nagato Uzumaki, yet to the outside world—and even to most within—Pain was the undisputed leader of the Akatsuki.

His orange hair was soaked with rain, yet he showed no discomfort. Metal piercings adorned his face like sacred sigils, and the expression he wore was as unreadable as stone.

Behind him walked a calm and composed woman.

Blue hair tied into a neat bun. A paper flower tucked carefully beside her ear.

She was Konan.

The only female member of the Akatsuki. A woman of cold beauty and even colder calculation.

She said nothing, standing silently beside Pain—her longtime friend, comrade, and co-founder of the Akatsuki.

The room was now filled with some of the most dangerous shinobi to ever walk the earth.

All were rogue ninjas—S-rank criminals who had turned their backs on their villages.

Each bore a dark past, unique abilities, and their own twisted philosophies.

Yet here they were, gathered under the same roof.

A silent alliance of deadly purpose.

They were not allies by heart.

They were bound by shared goals.

And fear.

And perhaps... ambition.

The room's heavy silence was broken when Sasori finally spoke.

His voice was smooth, mechanical.

"Leader, why have you summoned us so suddenly? I was in the middle of crafting my next masterpiece—fine puppetry requires time."

Before Pain could respond, a voice burst out.

"Hah! You call those stiff wooden dolls art? You're out of your mind, un!"

Deidara appeared beside Sasori with a smug grin on his face.

He held up a small clay bird in one hand, letting it flap softly.

"This is art. Boom! Explosion is fleeting, but its impact—unforgettable! That's real art, yeah!"

Sasori turned his head slightly, eye sockets gleaming.

"Temporary destruction is not art. My puppets—my creations—are eternal. They will remain even when your dust has vanished."

Their voices grew louder.

Their tone more aggressive.

The air between them practically crackled.

Then came another voice.

"Tch. Will you both shut up already?"

It was Kakuzu.

He crossed his arms, his stitched-up body radiating frustration.

"Because of your childish argument, the Leader's been delayed. I could've taken a bounty job during this time—now that's real loss. Wasting time like this... infuriating."

Kakuzu's eyes narrowed. The mention of lost profit seemed to genuinely pain him.

"You idiots owe me money," he muttered, grinding his teeth.

"Money won't matter when you reach true immortality!"

The overly enthusiastic voice came from Hidan, who stood tall and proud, holding his signature triple-bladed scythe.

He raised a finger upward, eyes gleaming with manic devotion.

"Only by worshipping Lord Jashin can one achieve real purpose! Blood, pain, sacrifice—that is the path to eternity!"

Kakuzu rolled his eyes, clearly used to his partner's endless rants.

Kisame stood in silence, arms crossed.

His shark-like face bore no emotion as he watched the argument unfold.

His massive sword Samehada was wrapped and slung across his back like a sleeping beast.

He didn't speak.

But his amusement was evident.

Orochimaru, meanwhile, remained seated, long fingers interlocked.

His snake-like eyes glimmered with intrigue.

He didn't interrupt the chaos.

He merely observed.

Like a scientist watching test subjects battle inside a sealed container.

He was entertained.

And curious.

---

Suddenly, the room fell quiet.

Pain's voice cut through the disorder.

"Enough."

It wasn't a shout.

It wasn't loud.

But the weight behind it suffocated every voice.

Even Hidan stopped mid-sentence.

Even Deidara fell silent.

The pressure in the air grew unbearable.

Pain's Rinnegan glowed with hidden menace.

They all felt it.

His power.

His will.

And they submitted.

Konan's eyes scanned the room briefly, ensuring order was restored.

Pain continued.

"We have gathered today to welcome a new member into the Akatsuki. A shinobi from Konoha. An Uchiha."

He turned slightly.

From the shadows stepped a figure.

Clad in the Akatsuki cloak, he moved with graceful silence.

Jet-black hair. Pale skin. Sharingan eyes glowing faintly.

Itachi Uchiha.

Pain's voice carried across the room once again.

"He is a master of the Sharingan. His Mangekyou techniques include Tsukuyomi—a genjutsu of time manipulation. Amaterasu—the black flame that devours all. And Susanoo—the celestial warrior that protects and destroys."

The members stared.

A Konoha shinobi.

A traitor.

S-rank.

Deadly.

A thick silence hung in the air after Pain's announcement. The Akatsuki members, though brimming with questions and suspicions, dared not speak immediately. All eyes were fixed on the newcomer.

Itachi Uchiha stood tall and composed, the red clouds on his cloak glowing faintly under the low light. His face was void of emotion—cold, unreadable. He radiated a quiet yet suffocating aura that unsettled even the most dangerous shinobi in the room.

Sasori was the first to break the silence, his mechanical voice echoing.

"An Uchiha... from Konoha, no less. What sin could you have committed to abandon the village of fire?"

Itachi said nothing.

But Orochimaru's eyes glimmered with something more dangerous than curiosity.

Obsession.

He studied Itachi from head to toe, focusing on his eyes.

"Those eyes..." Orochimaru whispered, his tone slithering with hunger. "The Mangekyou Sharingan... how delightful."

Pain raised a hand again. The room obeyed.

"You do not need to know his past. Only his power. Itachi has chosen our path. That is all that matters."

Konan stepped forward now, pulling out a sheet of paper with mission listings and resource allocations. Her tone was flat.

"We are moving into Phase One of the grand plan. Each member will be assigned a region to monitor, build networks, and retrieve information on the remaining Jinchūriki."

Kakuzu immediately raised a question, his voice annoyed.

"And what about funding? Missions? Targets?"

Konan answered without pause.

"A list of high-bounty targets has been compiled. You may pursue them at your discretion, provided you don't jeopardize our greater objective."

Kakuzu grunted.

Hidan laughed maniacally.

"Blood for money! And blood for Jashin! What a glorious combination!"

Zetsu suddenly emerged halfway from the wall, black and white halves whispering to one another.

"The movements of the Jinchūriki are... becoming active. The Kyuubi's host is still in Konoha. The Ichibi is roaming in Suna."

"Good," Pain replied. "In time, they will all fall into our grasp. One by one."

Kisame finally spoke, his deep voice cutting into the room.

"And what of Itachi? Who will be his partner?"

Pain turned slightly.

"You, Kisame. You will accompany him."

Kisame chuckled. His razor-sharp teeth glinted in the low light.

"Heh... so I'm partnered with the infamous Itachi Uchiha. This will be interesting."

Itachi remained silent.

He did not flinch.

Did not blink.

He simply accepted the role, as if it had already been written in stone.

Deidara sneered, arms crossed.

"Tch. Another pretty boy Uchiha. Let's hope he doesn't go preaching about eternal beauty like Sasori here."

Sasori ignored him, already turning his back to the crowd.

"I have puppets to refine. This meeting is over for me."

One by one, the members began to leave.

Zetsu melted back into the earth.

Hidan and Kakuzu bickered while exiting.

Kisame grinned and followed Itachi, speaking something inaudible.

Konan collected her papers and nodded briefly to Pain before disappearing.

Only Orochimaru lingered a moment longer, eyes still fixed on Itachi.

"Such talent... wasted on loyalty. We'll see how long that lasts."

Then he too, was gone.

Pain remained still, watching everyone leave.

His Rinnegan reflected the room's emptiness.

In that silence, he whispered.

"The era of shinobi will end. The age of pain shall begin."

Rain continued to fall outside, the heavens seemingly mourning what was to come.

And thus, the gears of Akatsuki began to turn.

The gathering was complete.

The hunt would begin.
