Chapter 5 - Chapter 5: The Origin

"How long has it been?" Evan muttered, blinking as he sat up in bed. He felt more awake than ever before. His room looked sharper, every edge and color vivid. He glanced at the window. A tiny fly rested on the glass. He could see its wings twitch, every detail clear.

"Is this for real?" Evan whispered, a grin spreading across his face. He felt a rush of excitement. He walked over to the wall, pressed his right hand against it, then his left. "Let's see…" He took a deep breath and started to climb.

"Whoa-this is so cool." Evan crawled up, sticking to the surface, and hung there like a spider. He laughed, amazed, then carefully dropped back to the floor.

Still buzzing, he got dressed and reached for the doorknob. With barely any pressure, the knob came off in his hand.

"Oh no. I forgot about the strength thing," Evan groaned. He was just like Peter had been at first, unable to control his new power. "Looks like I need a lot more practice," he thought, shaking his head.

Two black shadow ninjas emerged from the corners of the room, their scarlet eyes glowing.

Evan pointed at the broken doorknob and then at the toolbox under the bed. "Can you two fix this for me? The tools are right there."

The ninjas nodded, grabbed the toolbox, and started repairing the door.

Evan slipped out into the hallway, just as Ben's voice echoed from the bathroom. "Oh my God! Peter, how did you do that?"

Evan hurried over. At the bathroom door, he saw Peter standing by the sink, water spraying everywhere from a broken faucet. Ben was already down on one knee, trying to fix it.

"Sorry, Uncle Ben, I don't know what happened," Peter said, looking bewildered. "I just tried to turn the faucet and it broke off."

Evan tried not to laugh. He knew exactly what Peter was going through.

Ben glanced up and noticed Evan. "You and Peter go downstairs and wash up. Have breakfast first, or you'll be late again. I'll handle this."

"Okay, Uncle Ben," Evan replied, giving Peter a knowing look. Peter hurried out, and Evan followed, both of them being extra careful with the faucets this time.

At breakfast, they tried their best not to break anything else. Aunt May watched them with a raised eyebrow but didn't say anything.

As they were getting ready to leave, Aunt May called out, "Peter, you forgot your glasses!" She handed them to him as they reached the door.

"Thank you, Aunt May," Peter said, but he didn't put them on. He'd noticed that everything was blurry with the glasses, and perfectly clear without them. Was his vision really better?

On the street, Peter spotted the bus pulling up at the station. "Hurry up! The bus is here!" he shouted, breaking into a run.

Evan watched, amazed at Peter's speed. Not wanting to draw attention, Evan tried to control his own speed as he chased after Peter. He was still much faster than usual, but he kept it reasonable.

The bus driver glanced in the rearview mirror and saw Peter running up behind the bus. Before he could react, Peter caught up and tapped on the door.

The driver slammed on the brakes, causing everyone inside to lurch forward. "Oh my God! What are you doing?" he yelled. "Do you know how dangerous that is?"

Peter smiled awkwardly. "Sorry! My brother's right behind me."

A moment later, Evan arrived, panting for effect. "Whew… made it," he said, pretending to be out of breath.

Peter grinned at him, then noticed everyone on the bus staring. Evan quickly ducked behind Peter, trying to avoid the attention.

They found seats, and Peter looked around, spotting Liz sitting by the window. She glanced at him but turned back to the view outside.

Evan leaned over and whispered, "How did you run so fast?"

Peter shook his head. "I have no idea."

At school, the two headed to their classrooms. Tessa, who sat behind Evan, laughed. "You're not late? That's a first. Maybe it'll be a sunny day."

Evan shrugged. "Maybe it'll rain later."

Tessa looked out the window at the clear sky. "Not likely."

Meanwhile, Peter spent the whole morning distracted, staring at his hand. He barely listened in class and didn't snap out of it until Ned nudged him at lunch.

"Hey, man, what's up with you? You've been out of it all morning," Ned said, eyeing Peter curiously.

Peter blinked. "Huh? Oh, nothing. Just tired, I guess."

Ned shook his head. "Come on, let's get lunch."

In the cafeteria, Peter grabbed a tray and followed Ned to find a seat. Suddenly, Peter felt a strange tingle and instinctively stepped aside.

Thompson, who'd been about to shoulder-check Peter, missed and lost his balance. He crashed to the floor, his lunch tray flying and landing all over him.

The whole cafeteria turned to stare. Ned covered his mouth, trying not to laugh. "Oh my god, Peter, did you see that?"

Peter looked just as shocked. "I… I didn't do anything."

Thompson scrambled up, furious, food splattered everywhere. "Are you trying to make a fool of me?" he yelled at Peter.

Ned stepped in. "Maybe you should clean up first, Thompson."

Thompson glared at Peter, then stormed out, muttering angrily.

Ned turned to Peter, grinning. "That was awesome! You totally dodged him."

Peter shook his head. "I didn't even see him coming."

Later, in the hallway, Peter opened his locker and carefully put away his camera-the one Evan had given him. He treasured it.

Suddenly, Thompson stormed up. "Peter Parker!" he shouted.

Peter jumped. "What… what's wrong?"

"You embarrassed me in front of everyone!" Thompson yelled, swinging a punch.

Peter saw the fist coming in slow motion. He ducked, and Thompson's fist slammed into the metal locker.

"Ow!" Thompson howled, shaking his hand.

A crowd started to gather. "Come on, Thompson!" someone called. "Get him!"

Thompson swung again, but Peter dodged easily. He ducked and weaved, avoiding every punch. Thompson, getting angrier, threw a wild punch, but Peter backflipped and kicked him in the chin, sending him sprawling.

The crowd gasped. "Did you see that?" someone said. "Peter Parker just took down Thompson!"

Tessa, walking by with Evan, stopped. "He's your brother? He's got some moves."

Evan grinned. "Definitely. He's been hiding his strength."

Just then, a teacher arrived, breaking up the crowd. "What's going on here?" he demanded.

Everyone scattered, leaving Peter and Evan standing in the hallway. Peter glanced at Evan, wide-eyed.

Evan just smiled. "Looks like we both had an interesting morning."

Peter nodded, still in shock. "Yeah… I guess we did."
