Chapter 13 - Ch 13: Burn, Rebuild, Repeat

Morning found Field Alpha unusually silent. Dim emergency lights cast long shadows across the scarred concrete walls, highlighting the aftermath of their battle. Gwen moved slowly, cataloging the damage—broken sensors, shattered monitors, and charred circuits. Her hands trembled slightly as she picked up fragments of the drone they had fought, its black metal legs twisted and lifeless.

Across the room, Luffy sat on a crate, carefully cleaning the wound on his shoulder. The puncture was shallow but a sharp reminder of their vulnerability. He winced quietly as antiseptic touched raw flesh.

"We weren't ready," Gwen murmured, dropping another ruined component into the growing pile.

"But we survived," Luffy said firmly, his voice steady despite the fatigue in his eyes. "Oscorp knows our moves—but not who we really are."

Gwen's shoulders slumped, guilt pressing heavy against her chest. "This happened because I couldn't resist poking that AI."

Luffy shook his head gently. "This happened because Oscorp came looking. We just made them hurry. Better now than later."

His calm logic comforted Gwen slightly, but the weight didn't lift. She stood quietly for a moment, the remains of their struggle surrounding them.

Later that day, Gwen slipped back home, quietly entering her house and heading to her room. Her father noticed her subdued mood almost immediately. "Rough day, Gwen?"

"Just tired," she replied softly, forcing a smile. Captain Stacy studied her carefully but said nothing further, sensing her reluctance to speak. His quiet concern tugged at Gwen's heart; living this dual life felt harder than ever.

She moved mechanically through household chores, each mundane action sharpening her internal conflict. Finally alone in her room, Gwen sat on her bed, staring blankly at her reflection in the mirror. She wondered if she had truly grasped the seriousness of their path. Could she protect her father from the repercussions? Could she even protect herself?

Across town, Luffy sat quietly in his small apartment, staring thoughtfully at the worn straw hat resting gently in his hands. Memories of his past life were distant now, overshadowed by the reality of this one. His powers were incredible, but was he truly strong enough to shield Gwen from the threats they faced? Was he ready for what Oscorp might send next?

His guardian peeked in, offering a gentle smile. "Everything okay?"

"Just thinking," Luffy answered softly, smiling back reassuringly. But the calm vanished as soon as he was alone again, replaced by a steely resolve. He had to be stronger—much stronger.

Evening found them back at Field Alpha, each silently resolved to turn their near-defeat into resilience. Luffy unrolled a large sketchpad onto the central table, laying out elaborate designs for new defensive measures.

"What's that?" Gwen asked, intrigued despite her lingering unease.

"Elastic recoil points," Luffy explained, tracing intricate pathways around Field Alpha's perimeter. "I figured, if they come again, we should have surprises of our own."

Gwen nodded approvingly, then unfolded her own plans beside his. "I've designed an upgraded web-alarm system. It'll trigger silent alerts directly to us, bypassing anything Oscorp might expect."

They worked quietly but efficiently, each absorbed in their tasks. Gwen climbed gracefully around the base, installing hidden sensors and decoys. Luffy stretched and contorted his body, testing new elastic-powered traps. Slowly, the damaged remnants transformed into something stronger and smarter.

After several hours, Gwen motioned Luffy over to a newly reinforced wall panel. She pressed a hidden latch, revealing a carefully stocked compartment filled with medical supplies and backup gear.

"In case we ever need emergency support again," she said softly.

Luffy smiled appreciatively, his heart warming at her thoughtfulness. In return, he guided her to the rebuilt training area—now lined with tough padding and embedded with mock drones and targets.

"For next time," he said, determination burning in his eyes. Gwen nodded solemnly.

They sat down in the renewed sparring circle, surrounded by the evidence of their hard work. A comfortable silence settled between them, allowing the emotional strain of the previous day to ease gently.

"We needed this to happen," Luffy admitted finally, his voice calm but heavy with meaning.

Gwen shook her head, guilt still etched on her features. "We nearly lost everything because I was reckless."

"We didn't lose," Luffy said firmly, meeting her eyes. "We learned. We're still here, and now we know how to fight back."

Gwen exhaled deeply, finally letting his words settle. Slowly, the tension left her shoulders, replaced by a quiet confidence. "You're right. Oscorp might know some of our tricks, but they don't know how we'll respond. We can adapt."

Luffy nodded, encouraged by her renewed strength. "Exactly. This is our chance to move forward. No more just reacting. It's time we hit Oscorp where it hurts."

Gwen stood slowly, picking up a small carving tool from the table. With careful precision, she etched a new phrase beneath the spider symbol on the wall:

Burn. Rebuild. Repeat.

She stepped back, surveying her handiwork with quiet pride. "That's how we survive."

Luffy stood beside her, feeling a renewed sense of purpose. They weren't just victims anymore. They weren't simply anomalies or subjects. They were fighters, protectors, a team forged by fire and determination.

"Next time Oscorp comes, they'll find something they're not expecting," Luffy said confidently.

"What's that?" Gwen asked, a faint smile returning to her lips.

"Us—stronger, smarter, and ready to win."

Gwen laughed softly, the sound brightening the previously grim chamber. "You always make it sound easier than it is."

"Because we make each other stronger," Luffy replied earnestly. "Together, there's nothing we can't face."

Their gazes locked, an unspoken agreement passing between them. They were ready. They'd faced the fire, rebuilt stronger than before, and were prepared to repeat the process as often as necessary.

The lights in Field Alpha glowed steadily, illuminating a space not just rebuilt physically, but emotionally fortified by trust and resilience. Outside, the world was dark and filled with unknown threats, but within these walls, they had everything they needed.

For the first time since the drone attack, they felt ready. Ready for whatever Oscorp—or anyone else—might send their way.
