I'd into the office when I noticed the shift.
Melanie's smile was thinner than usual, her eyes darting toward her phone every few seconds as though waiting for something urgent to confirm her worst fears.
The team buzzed around the foundation's headquarters in a strange, uneasy rhythm. Everything looked the same, our usual morning hum of activitybut the energy was off.
And I felt it immediately.
"Is something wrong?" I asked her, setting my bag down and pulling off my coat.
She hesitated before answering. "There's been a leak."
My heart dropped.
"What kind of leak?" I asked, already fearing the worst.
Melanie handed me her tablet. "Anonymous whistleblower. They've contacted a few media outlets, claiming financial irregularities in one of our satellite offices overseas. Nairobi."
My chest tightened. "That's not possible. We just wrapped our first audit there. It was clean."
