Chapter 10 - Chapter 9 – The Aftermath: Hero or Target?

The courtyard was eerily silent as the students gathered, the only sound being the hurried footsteps of teachers and students alike. Caleb stood near the front, feeling the weight of their eyes once again. This time, it wasn't just admiration. There was a flicker of fear and uncertainty that accompanied it.

Logan, ever the confident one, slapped Caleb on the back with a grin. "Don't sweat it. We've faced worse. Right, Liliana?"

Liliana, who had been walking beside Logan, shot Caleb an amused glance. "Yeah, if you call facing actually dangerous creatures 'worse.' We've got this." Her voice was laced with her usual confidence, but Caleb could tell she was trying to mask the nerves creeping in.

Tessa, who had been quiet up until then, gave Caleb a reassuring look. "It'll be okay. We've handled things before."

But Caleb wasn't entirely convinced. The tension in the air was too thick, and the whispering students around him made it worse. Everyone was on edge, and for good reason—no one knew what they were facing. Even the teachers were scrambling.

Just as Caleb opened his mouth to say something, the ground beneath their feet trembled. The air shifted suddenly, an unsettling energy surrounding them as a deep growl echoed from the darkness of the courtyard.

Tessa stiffened, her hand instinctively reaching for her side. "This isn't good."

Logan rolled his shoulders, his usual grin still plastered on his face. "Oh, don't be so dramatic. We'll take care of it. As usual."

Liliana narrowed her eyes at the shadows. "I hope you're right."

Then, from behind them, Caleb felt a tap on his shoulder. Turning around, he saw Troy standing there with his usual smug grin plastered across his face. Troy had always had a thing for mocking Caleb, especially after his rise to hero status among the students.

"Well, well, well," Troy sneered, stepping closer, eyes full of mockery. "The big hero himself. I'm sure you're loving all this attention, huh? I guess saving everyone really does make you a star."

Caleb's gaze hardened, his fists clenching involuntarily. "Troy, now's not the time."

"Oh, but of course it is. You finally get some real recognition, and look at you. People are calling you a hero. It must be nice to finally have a purpose, huh?" Troy's words dripped with bitterness.

"Enough, Troy," Liliana interjected sharply, glaring at him. "You're wasting time."

Troy ignored her, clearly enjoying the effect his words had on Caleb. "Don't act like you didn't enjoy it," Troy taunted. "I mean, everyone's looking at you, talking about how you saved the day. It must feel good to finally be someone... after all these years of hiding."

Caleb felt the weight of his own emotions rise, a sudden surge of frustration threatening to spill over. He clenched his jaw, but Logan stepped in between them just as Caleb opened his mouth to respond.

"Knock it off, Troy," Logan said, his voice low but commanding. "You're not helping."

Troy scowled at him, but for once, he kept his mouth shut. Still, Caleb could feel the tension lingering between them, and the lingering resentment from Troy made him uneasy.

"Let's just focus, yeah?" Liliana said, her voice steady but firm. "We've got bigger problems to deal with than his mouth."

Caleb nodded, grateful for Liliana's presence. Despite everything, she always knew when to step in. He turned back to the front, his mind racing. This wasn't about Troy, not really. The creature that was threatening them was still lurking somewhere, and he couldn't afford to let distractions take over.

The shadows around them seemed to deepen, and suddenly, a monstrous screech filled the air, followed by a shadowy form charging toward them from the darkness.

"Stay close!" Logan called out, his voice full of urgency.

Liliana immediately jumped into action, her agility on full display as she darted toward the creature. "Logan, take the left flank! Caleb, take the right!"

Before Caleb could react, the creature lunged at them. It was fast, far faster than anything they had faced before. Its eyes glowed with an unnatural, eerie light, and its body was a massive, shifting mass of shadow and scales. A low, guttural growl emanated from it, sending chills down Caleb's spine.

Tessa was already in motion, her magic crackling in her hands. "Logan! Liliana! Get ready!"

The battle was chaotic, but they were handling it. Liliana was slicing through the creature's form with her swift strikes, Logan using his energy-based powers to create barriers and blasts to keep the creature at bay. Caleb took a step back, realizing there was nothing he could do without exposing his abilities—something he wasn't willing to do in front of all these students.

Suddenly, a large, powerful tail whipped out of the shadows and sent Liliana flying. Caleb's heart skipped a beat. He moved instinctively toward her, but before he could reach her, the creature turned toward him, its menacing eyes glowing brighter.

That's when something in Caleb snapped. Without thinking, his abilities surged forward, his magic flaring to life. Blue and gold light exploded around him, creating a barrier between the creature and the others. The creature recoiled in shock, momentarily stunned.

"Caleb!" Liliana shouted from the ground, her voice full of surprise and something else—respect?

In a split second, Caleb was surrounded by an intense energy he hadn't allowed himself to use in so long. It felt raw, dangerous, but necessary. The creature lunged at him again, but Caleb stood firm, his aura flaring as he pushed the creature back with a powerful surge of his energy.

"I've got this," Caleb muttered under his breath, his voice filled with determination.

The creature screeched again, but it didn't get another chance. Caleb unleashed another surge of energy, and the creature, weakened and overwhelmed by his power, finally collapsed into nothingness, vanishing into the shadows.

The students stood frozen, their eyes wide with disbelief. No one spoke for a moment as the remnants of the creature dissipated into thin air. Then, as the silence stretched on, a ripple of murmurs spread through the crowd.

"That was… incredible," someone finally said, breaking the silence.

"Did Caleb just—?"

"Yeah," another student whispered. "I think he just saved all of us."

The realization was dawning on everyone, and Caleb could feel the weight of it. He was no longer just the quiet, withdrawn student. He had stepped into the role of something bigger—a hero, whether he liked it or not.

Logan slapped him on the back. "That's what I'm talking about, Caleb. You really are a hero."

Liliana gave him a nod, though her eyes were searching him carefully, as if trying to gauge something deeper.

But it was Troy who spoke up next, his voice dripping with jealousy. "Huh. Guess saving the day has its perks, huh? Too bad you were too busy hiding your powers before you could really do anything."

Caleb shot him a look, his patience wearing thin. "Shut up, Troy."

"Don't let it get to you, Caleb," Tessa said, coming to stand next to him, her expression serious. "You did what you had to do."

But even as the others reassured him, Caleb knew that something had changed. The eyes on him weren't just filled with awe anymore. They were filled with something else.

Fear. And maybe even a little bit of respect.
