Chapter 124 - Chapter 123: Gains, and New Goals

After successfully meeting the three Masters, Kahn's mission was finally complete. His next step was to rendezvous with Iroh in the Fire Nation.

Iroh had already reached their agreed meeting point—a small town separated from the Fire Nation capital by just one mountain, a hidden White Lotus stronghold.

Not just them—Ursa and Zuko's group would also gather here. The plan would officially begin once everyone assembled.

Even with the Nike speeding things up, the journey from the North Pole to the Fire Nation still took several days.

After the initial novelty of flying wore off, the rest became somewhat boring, so the Masters naturally began to chat.

What do three Masters talk about when they chat?

Everything. But the topic that came up most often was, unsurprisingly, Bending. Their conversations were an absolute treasure trove for Kahn.

Kahn considered himself exceptionally talented—but among these three Masters, each of whom had already reached the pinnacle of bending in their own unique paths, who wasn't a once-in-a-century genius?

Not only were they monstrously talented, but each had spent decades diving deep into their bending.

Their comprehension, accumulation, and refinement were on a completely different level.

Even though none of this was a formal lesson for Kahn, merely overhearing their conversations benefited him greatly.

One of his biggest gains was Jeong Jeong's explanation of Firebending philosophy.

His understanding of Earthbending and Waterbending also broadened.

For example, Pakku spoke of a Waterbending style that manipulated the water inside plants to indirectly control them. King Bumi discussed the Earth Kingdom's Sandbending, practiced mainly by Earthbenders living in the deserts.

As for the rest... Kahn was mostly lost.

He hadn't even fully grasped the basics of Earthbending and Waterbending yet, so understanding the advanced concepts King Bumi and Pakku described was still out of reach.

Of course, he wasn't just passively listening.

While he couldn't compare to the Masters in bending comprehension, he had lived in a world with an internet information explosion in his previous life.

Maybe he lacked depth, but his breadth was second to none.

For example—

"Metal is also part of earth. Can it be manipulated independently as its own branch?"

"Earthbending and Waterbending can suspend earth and water in midair—so can they suspend people for flight?"

"Waterbending can manipulate the water in plants… so what about the water in the human body?"

"Waterbending can turn water into ice. Why can't it turn water into hot water?"

Even the well-traveled three Masters were stunned by Kahn's wild questions and bizarre imagination. Honestly, no one knew how his brain worked.

No wonder Kahn's Firebending always had strange, unconventional moves.

"A crazy genius, haha! I like that!"

King Bumi laughed heartily, hooking an arm around Kahn's neck like an old drinking buddy.

Though King Bumi was the oldest and most senior, he was also the least pretentious.

He kept a mischievous, childlike joy in strange and curious things—and among the three, he was the one who appreciated Kahn the most.

"If you ask me, you're already worthy of the Master title. That boy Iroh is good at everything—just a bit too timid, hah! But he's great at conning people."

That boy Iroh?

Kahn's eyelid twitched. But considering King Bumi was over a hundred years old, calling a fifty-to-sixty-year-old Iroh "boy" was… actually pretty normal.

Also, something in his tone made Kahn curious.

"I'm already worthy of the Master title? Why do you say that?"

King Bumi grinned.

"To earn the title Master, there aren't any mysterious standards. Let me tell you the simplest method: just call yourself a Master, spread the word, and survive. Congratulations—you're one!"

"How about that? Simple, right?!"

Kahn hesitated.

"It's simple… but it sounds a bit dangerous and reckless?"

"Hahaha! Opportunity and danger always coexist!"

At this moment, Jeong Jeong stepped in.

"But Master Iroh's standards are reasonable. Experience and broadened horizons are necessary. The ignorant are arrogant; the learned are humble. Only by maintaining a respectful heart toward bending can one go further."

"This is even more important for a Firebender—especially you, Kahn."

Jeong Jeong looked at him seriously.

"Your mind is active, and your ideas are whimsical. That is a good thing. But precisely because of this, you must maintain a mindset of restraint. Otherwise, with just a slight lapse, fire will unknowingly corrode your mind."

Kahn nodded and responded sincerely, "I'll keep that in mind."

The rumors about Jeong Jeong's eccentric yet strict personality were true.

He wasn't harsh with Kahn, but he behaved like a demanding teacher who carried high expectations. Honestly, it was a bit overwhelming.

"But in the end, it still comes down to strength."

Pakku spoke calmly.

"Although King Bumi's explanation is… concise, it's essentially correct."

"As for the title Master, strictly speaking, you can call yourself one anytime. But if you want recognition from the world, you rely on your strength. 'Traveling and exchanging ideas' is nothing more than that."

Pakku might have a sharp tongue, but he shared a streak of eccentricity with King Bumi.

As long as you weren't his target, he was quite an interesting conversational partner.

Through the back-and-forth between the three, Kahn finally understood something: the title Master was far less rigid than he had imagined. Standards varied wildly across tribes, regions, and individuals.

The requirements Iroh listed for him were clearly modeled after the Masters surrounding him—meaning, essentially, the level of the strongest in the world.

However, even though Iroh had tricked him again, Kahn agreed with these standards. He also understood that this was Iroh's earnest expectation for him.

Kahn smiled.

Aiming to be the world's strongest—not just the strongest Firebender, but to become the strongest bender of all—now that was interesting.

All in all, during these casual conversations, Kahn gained immensely.

He broadened his horizons, learned about various bending sub-styles, and more importantly, set a new goal for himself—one that was interesting, challenging, and deeply motivating.

After this talk, Kahn's longing for the world outside grew even stronger.

As long as Ozai is defeated.

Carrying this burning anticipation, after several days of travel, Kahn and the others finally reached their destination.
