Chapter 2 - Infernum : The hope of life

Kal held Robert so he could stay in control.

"Robert, listen. I haven't told you something yet," Kal declared.

Robert stared at Kal with a frustrating look.

"What is it, Kal?"

Kal released Robert.

"When I woke up in this world, I found myself lying on the ground in a dense forest, in front of a big banyan tree. I was confused and shocked about what was happening.

At that moment, I realized I was wearing armor—totally strange for me. It created a question in my mind: What's happening?

"But before I could think further, a monster attacked me. It was a horse demon, as you've seen. I just beat the crap out of him.

Now, looking at you, I realize something. It's like the rose has given us some kind of power—like stuff meant for our survival." Kal explained.

Robert's face lit up.

"So it means… I'm a superhero! No one would be able to defeat us!" Robert shouted with excitement.

At that moment, Liza snapped.

"No way! You can't be that strong. Even top-level Enomys are weaker than that!" she screamed.

Kal and Robert's faces fell as they heard her words.

"What is an Enomy?" they both shouted together.

Realizing what she had just revealed, Liza slapped herself. She had made a huge mistake.

"No… It's nothing. I was just shocked. It's just nonsense," she quickly clarified.

"Left it alright. Since you saved my life, Robert, I'll tell you everything I know about those creatures," Liza declared.

She stood up, leaning against the tree for support.

I just messed up everything… I'd better clear it all before the secret comes out, she thought to herself.

Kal was jumping with excitement, his eyes glowing with a new brightness.

"Robert! Now we'll finally have the answers to our questions!" Kal exclaimed.

But Robert wasn't ready yet. He was still caught between shock and the thrill of his new powers.

Liza crossed her arms.

"Look, these creatures are usually referred to as demons. But that's just a misunderstanding. In reality… they're a race called the Narkas."

"Race? Narka?" Robert interrupted her.

Hearing his question, Liza punched her own fist.

"Don't disturb or interrupt me," she declared, glaring at Robert and knocking him down with her look alone.

"Where was I… ah, yes. In total, there are 220 races of demons—200 demon races and 15 devil races—ruled by 5 kings," she declared firmly.

Kal scratched his head. "Five kings? Then there must be five different kingdoms of the Narkas."

"No, they're not like subordinates," she clarified.

"Subordinates? Of whom?" Kal inquired.

"Man, you ask too much," she sighed. "Of the Supreme Narka King—the true king of the Narkas. He is the main problem," she explained.

"The main problem, but why and how demon and devil are classified—on power or on what?" Kal inquired.

"Do you think that I am a Narka's professor?" she barked as she punched him.

Seeing this, If I didn't make that mistake, my family would be as great as this one, Robert thought.

The scene shifted to Robert's village.

The village was destroyed.

The ground was covered with debris from buildings and blood pieces.

At once, one of the debris started moving, from which a hand emerged, showing that someone had survived.

The scene came back to Robert.

Kal stood up, stepping forward.

"Liza, would you like to join us?" he asked her.

"Why would I join you?" Liza asked.

"Because we are all unknown to this world," Kal clarified.

"OK, since I was travelling alone for a long time, I need some people for support. Yes, I will join you," Liza answered.

At that moment, a roaring sound emerged.

"Grrr," Liza tensed, looking worried.

"Who is this—another monster?" she shouted.

At once, Robert started blushing with tears. "It was my stomach, I am hungry," Robert declared.

"Are you serious, making this sound? In this place, it's dangerous!" Liza shouted.

"So-sorry, L-Liza," Robert apologized.

"But, Liza, do you have food… one bite?"

Liza crossed her arms.

"No, I am empty-handed. I've been travelling for a long time, and my food was finished way before."

Hearing Liza's words, Robert's face fell.

"No, I am hungry," Robert replied.

Liza stepped forward, clenching her fist.

"Stop! Your hunger or I will stop you!" Liza declared.

"Left it, Liza. Robert, let us search for fruit to satisfy your hunger," Kal said.

"Let's go, Kal, let's go!" Robert exclaimed.

Scene shifted to a forest on fire,

where some demons (whose faces were in the shape of suns emitting bright light, with thin pale bodies, 3–5 feet tall) were bowing in front of a 19-foot-tall man, his body covered with a cloak (his face hidden).

"Master, we have destroyed this place. Each of the living creatures has been killed," one demon said.

The huge man stepped forward.

"Well done, my slaves. You have done well. But how dare you talk to me directly without taking permission from me?" the man declared.

At once, a burning tree started bending like a snake.

"Master, I am sorry—please, master!"

"Please!" the demon begged.

The flaming tree-snake dashed forward and crushed that demon in a moment.

It was like a tornado of fire, which ended the demon's life.

"Listen, Leftonces, I am sending you to the Kailans to warn them to leave Eva Marcy to me. Otherwise, they will face more consequences," the man ordered.

His body turned into fire and blended with the burning forest.

The scene shifted back to Robert, who was sighing loudly.

"Kal, it's been almost two hours since we started walking. Now, I can't control my hunger!" Robert shouted. Liza stomped her leg on the ground.

"Could you stay silent for a moment? I am thinking," she barked.

"It's weird… in this entire forest, there isn't even a single fruit tree," Kal inquired.

Suddenly, Robert stopped walking and started staring at the sky.

"Robert, what are you doing?" Kal asked when he noticed him staring.

"Kal, look, there's smoke over there!" Robert declared.

Kal turned and saw that it wasn't far, about 100m away.

"Smoke means there's a village… which means food. Let's go," Kal exclaimed.

But the thing they didn't know was that it would change their lives forever.

When they were almost there—

"Kal, did you smell something?" Robert asked.

Kal sniffed.

"No, I didn't. Maybe it's just your imagination," Kal replied.

Suddenly, Liza's face went pale.

"No… it couldn't be!" she screamed, as if she knew something was happening.

She rushed toward the village as fast as she could.

"Stop, Liza! Wait for us!" Kal shouted as he started following her.

But when they entered, they realized the danger they would face in the future.

The village was destroyed, and only the ruins of buildings were left.

The few buildings that remained were severely damaged, stained with deep red marks of blood.

The ground was covered with blood, half-burned flesh, and a stench that made it seem as though it had just happened.

Kal stepped back after seeing it.

What really happened here? It's like the entire village was set on fire just a few seconds ago, he thought to himself.

At that moment, Kal realized Robert was in bad condition. He turned and saw Robert shaking in fear, his eyes filled with tears.

Robert's voice trembled.

"No, not again… Mom, MOM!!!"

Kal stepped toward him.

"Robert, calm down."

Suddenly, a powerful wave of energy erupted from Robert, pushing Kal and Liza away.

"Why… my vision is blurred…" Robert whispered.

Liza's vision blurred as well, and she collapsed on the ground.

"Robert!" Kal shouted as he rushed toward him.

At that sudden moment—

"Don't shout!" a voice emerged.

It was Robert.

"I am fine, man… I mean, I am OK."

Hearing that, Kal took a deep breath.

"Relief," Kal laughed as he sat on the ground.

Liza's expression changed, erupting like a volcano.

"Are you two idiots? You think this place is a playground? There are bodies everywhere—like a butcher shop, you—"

"If we relax here, we'll end up as meat ourselves. Or a barbecue," she shouted.

Kal stood up.

"You're right, Liza, it's no time to rest. And Robert—how long are you going to lie on blood? We've got more plans," Kal mocked.

"No, man, I mean, no—there was no plan," Robert replied.

"'There was'? What happened to your grammar, man?" Kal teased.

"These two are totally crazy. If I live with them, I'll go crazy too," Liza muttered under her breath.

Suddenly—

"Hic… hic… Mama, Dadda, hic…" a girl's voice echoed.

Kal and Robert turned to Liza.

"It's a little girl's voice," they declared.

Liza's expression tightened.

"How can someone still be alive in this kind of place?"

Kal stepped forward.

"Let's go. Let's follow the voice."

They began following the sound.

"It's not right to follow an unknown voice," Liza cautioned.

"But why?" Robert asked.

Liza stomped.

"Because it could be a Narka, mimicking a girl's voice. That would be dangerous!" she snapped.

As they reached a building with a broken board that read Butcher Shop, Robert said,

"I'll enter here," and stepped inside.

Kal and Liza stood staring at him.

"Are you serious? There could be a Narka! Even if there isn't, this building is collapsing. Look—the whole third floor has fallen, burn marks everywhere, scratches!" Liza shouted.

"I don't know," Robert replied as he entered the shop, "and no one should follow me."

"Kal, I have a question," Liza whispered.

"Yeah, ask," Kal replied.

"Does Robert have red pupils or black?"

Kal scratched his head.

"Black, but why? Are you interested in him?" he mocked.

"No, moron. I noticed his eyes were black at first, but when we entered the village, they were crimson red—like blood," she said seriously.

Kal laughed.

"No, it's just your imagination. You probably saw the reflection of blood on the ground," he replied.

The scene shifted toward Robert.

"Oh damn, the floor… even if he was here, he couldn't control this moment," Robert muttered.

The place was filled with crushed flesh and pieces of broken bone.

Half of the ceiling had collapsed, the structure barely supported by two thick metal rods.

It reeked of death.

"Even if I vomit here, no one would see," he whispered—then vomited.

"Disgusting."

As he moved forward, he noticed a closet with a rusted lock.

"Is anyone inside this closet?" he shouted.

"Mom, Dad, you've returned," a girl's voice replied.

Hearing that, Robert smiled.

"It's my showtime. It's been so long—nearly a century since I last used it," Robert declared, his hand glowing with a red aura.

He landed a punch on the lock, breaking it apart.

Inside, he found a girl of about seven, wearing a red hood (like Little Red Riding Hood) and a brown school dress embroidered with a lily mark on the chest.

Seeing Robert, the little girl cried,

"Y-You… Mom… Dad…"

Robert raised his index finger.

"Look, I'm human, just like you. Now don't cry, little girl," he said in a calm, soothing voice.

The scene shifted to Kal and Liza, who were inspecting the area.

"Liza, look—this building… It's like it was on fire just last night," Kal said.

"Yes, you're right," Liza replied.

At that moment, Kal noticed something.

"Look, Robert returned!"

But it was strange—his leg was covered in blood, his foot was bleeding, and on his back was a little girl.

"Robert, what happened there?" Kal demanded, holding his bleeding hand.

Robert looked at him and said with a faint smile,

"Nothing, man… I mean, Kal. Just the ground and walls were covered in blood, a thick layer that made it look like my legs and hands were bleeding."

Hearing that, Kal took a deep breath.

Liza stepped forward, arms crossed.

"Who is she, Robert?" she inquired.

"She… she is—" Robert glanced at the girl. "What's your name, little one?" he asked gently, rubbing her head.

The little girl with bright scarlet eyes stared at him.

"My… my name is Eva, Eva Marcy," she declared.

Kal sat on his knees, holding her shoulder, comforting her.

"Why were you there, inside that place?" Kal inquired.

"And she was inside a cabinet—or sorry, locked in a cabinet," Robert declared as his focus changed toward a bright yellow flower.

"Wow!!!" he exclaimed.

"Leave him, just tell me why you were inside that cabinet," Kal asked while comforting her as well as he could.

"I… I… I was there because my uncle Charles told me to stay there, to protect me from each of the dangers I have to face."

She started crying as she said so.

Hearing that, Kal's face turned serious.

"How long were you there?"

The girl rubbed her eyes. "For… five days. I was locked out. I could hear almost every scream of people, and it was all hi… his… terrifying," she declared.

After those words spilled out, there was absolute deathly silence.

Suddenly—

"Guys!" Robert shouted, crushing the yellow flower that was growing on the rotten flesh of a corpse.

"Let's go in search of his family!"

Hearing that, Liza's face fell.

"No, are you an idiot? Look at this place—this is pure hell! Could you"

"Imagine a single organism to be alive," she declared while pointing her finger toward the destroyed building.

"No, Liza, he is correct, as Eva's alive—our living evidence. But we should check this place as we are out of resources," Kal explained.

"OK, do whatever you two want," she declared.

"They are really good. Even if they found one, he would be half dead," she thought to herself as she looked at the kid's (Eva's) eyes.

"Her eyes… they resemble her, huh," Liza sighed to herself.

Suddenly—

"Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha!" monstrous laughter echoed with a high pitch.

"So, you are the survivors of this village, Kailans. Master Arunakreon ordered u all to surrender, Eva Marcy to him or else face consequences, worse than before, " it declared

Hearing that, Robert's face turned serious.

"More Narka… even more to kill!" Robert declared.

Robert jumped on the bushes. He landed, but as his fist caught on fire,

"Ho… fire," he said. "Now, I am the one with firepower. Yeahhh!" he exclaimed.

"Idiot! They are Sun Demons, and of the two hundred races of demons, don't touch their body—you would catch on fire! Their sun-shaped head is their weak point!"

Hearing that, Robert turned and saw a 3–5 foot 5-foot-tall creature, having a shining, pale yellow body. The sun-shaped head was made up of a crystal-like substance.

"Shit, how could I touch that thing, disgusting thing, MAN!" Robert shouted as he punched it. Its face shattered into pieces.

"It was fun, but not that much," he said as he saw a group of 20–30 Sun Demons rushing toward them.

"Man, listen, you all Narka! Tell your boss, Arunakreon, or whatever he is, that I will kick his ass, because I wanna fight a strong opponent!" He shouted.

As these words flowed from his mouth, the force of Narka started shivering in fear.

"What you said, why does he challenge him? He can hear from our ears and can see anything from our—" a Narka said, as Robert crushed its head, slamming it on the ground.

"I don't care who or what he is, I'll decide," Robert declared.

"Arunakreon … he has returned. Why does he leave me alone?" Liza whispered to herself in terror.

Just after that

Her eyes were filled with horror and disbelief.

"Kal, look at him!" she shouted.

Kal turned and saw that Robert's armour was turning blood-red. He wasn't just defeating demons—he was tearing them apart.

Robert grabbed a demon's hand and tore it out, then twisted the other demon's mouth. The worst part was, he was doing all this while his hands were engulfed in fire.

Seeing this horrifying scene, Eva started shivering.

Kal gripped her tightly, blocking her vision.

"Man, I'm having a lot of fun in this world," Robert declared.

At the same time, in a dark cave, a flash of light emerged from nowhere.

"Hmmm… someone is training in this place," a voice murmured.

It was the same man who had been in the burning forest, holding flames as his torch.

"Arunakreon, my friend, how dare you try to enter my place! You bastard!"

A deep, devastating voice thundered from the shadows.

A figure appeared from nowhere—

a 10-foot-tall beast with grey skin.

"Ka—" Arunakreon (the man in the forest) spoke, but he was interrupted.

"Don't call my name with your mouth, or else," the beast in shadows declared.

Arunakreon sat on a rock.

"Oh, I know it—you are his clone. His old habit of taking tasks to train himself, even if it was just a mission."

He leaned forward and declared, "So, what's the mission?"

The words were barely finished when Arunakreon's hand was slashed clean off.

"Don't ask me. Don't disturb me," the beast replied coldly.

The mist cleared as the scene shifted back to Liza—

who was erupting in anger after seeing Eva's traumatized face.

"It's too much, you son of a—!" Liza declared.

She clenched her fist and dashed toward Robert.

He turned and saw a crimson-red aura blazing from her strike for a fraction of a second—then it landed on his face.

She followed with another strike.

Then, twisting her body midair, she slammed her leg into his abdomen, launching him away and crashing him into a tree.

"Robert!! Liza, why did you do that?!" Kal shouted as he rushed toward him.

Seeing Eva alone, some demons turned toward her—but before they could step forward, their heads were cut off.

It was Liza who had done that.

Afterward, she turned toward—

Her eyes were as red as the fire of Hell, her face falling dark as a cruel entity possessed her.

Seeing her terrifying expression, they ran away—

but not for long.

In a single slash, Liza shattered them while her aura raged.

"Ana!! This is for you, my sis!" she shouted as loud as she could.

Her vision blurred, and her strength failed. She collapsed on the ground.

The scene shifted to a dark mist, where Liza was sitting on the ground, weakened.

"Liza didi…" a girl's voice emerged.

Hearing that, Liza's eyes filled with terror. She stood up and saw a girl of about eight or nine, wearing a yellow dress.

With a white dragon pattern etched across her skin, the girl cried out:

"Liza, why didn't you ever try to save us? You can save us from him, if you want…"

She screamed as her head burst like a balloon, her body burning away.

Seeing that scene, Liza's eyes turned dull, her face pale, her eyes filled with horror.

"Ana, no! Not again!" she screamed as she turned up, realizing it was a dream.

Soon she realized the truth—

"Liza, are you okay?" Robert spoke out.

Hearing that, she realized she was in a bed, inside an old, untidy room.

"Where am I?" she asked.

"You are at my house," a sudden voice answered.

He was a man, nearly thirty.

"Liza, meet Eva's uncle, Charles," Kal declared. "He was the one who saved us after you and Robert lost consciousness."

"Thank you, sir," she said.

"It's okay. That was because you three saved my niece's life. It's nothing compared to it," Uncle Charles declared. "And yes, I was not alone. He was with me."

"He… who?" Liza asked.

A boy stepped into the room, holding a stray sword in his hand.

"Hi, I am Sava, Eva's big brother. I am seventeen years old… and single," Sava declared.

"Hm, single? Are you an idiot? My single nephew," Uncle Charles mocked him.

Liza stood and stared at them.

"Sorry for you two… You survived that massacre."

"You are straightforward, but it's okay. We two and seven more men are the last few survivors," Uncle Charles declared.

Suddenly, Kal stood up, clapping.

"OK, let Liza rest for a moment," he declared.

Leaving the room, everyone went out, but before leaving, Kal stepped toward Liza.

"Who is Ana?" he whispered in her ear.

Hearing that, Liza broke down and started screaming—

"AHH! AHH!! AHHH!"

"It's all my fault. I could save her," she begged to herself, blaming again.

Kal left the room.

Hearing Liza's screams, Robert asked,

"Kal, what happened to Liza?"

"She is in trauma. Don't try to disturb her. She needs rest. Leave her alone, man," Kal declared.

"And yeah, could you tell us why the Narkas were in search of Eva? And who the hell is Arunakreon?" Kal inquired.

"He is a devil… a monster, everything you can say!" Sava shouted. "He killed my parents, my friends… and everyone I ever loved!" he screamed with tears in his eyes.

"Calm, Sava. Yes, Arunakreon is a devil. He is also known as the King of Devils. But he's not a Narka," Uncle explained.

"Wait—how could he be a devil but not a Narka at the same time, man?" Robert asked.

"Because he was really a man, an Enomy. He was a human who betrayed his own existence," Uncle clarified.
