"Regret what?" Veer asked.
"Coming to this world," Kaya elaborated, her dark eyes searching his face. "Taking that massive gamble with the rift. What if you had died crossing over? What if the planned failed and the stones had crushed you?"
Veer looked at her. A slow, incredibly soft smile touched the corners of his lips.
"You know," Veer murmured, his voice a deep, vibrating rumble in the quiet space. "When the healers said that you might die if you stayed in the beast world... when you said this rift was the only chance for you to survive the parasites in your blood even if that was a guess... I did not even think it through. It was not a choice. It was simply the only path."
He reached up, catching her hand against his cheek, pressing a soft kiss to her palm.
