The next morning, Kaya woke to find Serra already up, standing at the cave entrance and staring out at the valley below with an intensity that immediately put her on alert.
"What is it?" Kaya asked quietly, moving to stand beside the wolf.
Serra didn't turn, her amber eyes fixed on something in the distance. "Eagles. Three of them. Flying a search pattern about two valleys over."
Kaya felt her stomach drop. "They're closer than you predicted."
"Yes." Serra's voice was grim. "They must have gotten new information, or they're moving faster than I estimated. Either way—" She finally looked at Kaya. "—we have less time than I thought. Maybe five days. Maybe less."
"Damn it." Kaya rubbed her face, trying to wake up fully and think clearly. "Can they see this valley from where they are?"
