Chapter 70 - Ch 70 : Going solo

I cursed under my breath and quickly drew my dagger, flipping over to get back up.

However, before I could fully stand up, the two walkers had already surrounded me, their speed catching me off guard.

The two walkers, one on each side, reached out with their arms, moaning and grabbing at me.

A strong, putrid stench hit me, and I jerked my upper body back just in time to avoid their grasping hands.

I took advantage of the momentum to kick the walker on the right, which was slightly behind, sending it crashing to the ground.

The walker on the left lunged at me, pinning me down.

I strained to hold it back, but its movements were surprisingly vigorous, considering it might have been starving for too long.

I struggled to keep it at bay, my arms trembling with effort.

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw the other walker getting back up.

With a surge of adrenaline, I heaved the walker off me and plunged my dagger into its head.

The walker went limp, but its weight still pressed down on my arm.

I tossed the corpse aside and kicked the other walker, which was crawling towards me, in the face.

The kick was so forceful that it ripped off a chunk of flesh, leaving it dangling from the walker's jaw as it moaned and moved closer.

I shuddered at the sight and delivered another brutal kick to its head.

This kick finally managed to dislodge the chunk of flesh, which fell to the side.

Although the walker was unable to move forward after the kicks, it didn't retreat.

I kicked it again and quickly sat up, using my arms to support myself.

Just as I was about to stand up, the walker grabbed my leg and lunged forward, mouth open wide to bite.

I was startled, and without stabilizing myself, I plunged my dagger into its head.

Luckily, despite the sudden movement, I managed to hit my target.

I kicked off the walker's hand, which was still grasping my ankle, and wiped my dagger in the snow.

Catching my breath, I stood up.

Fortunately, dealing with these two walkers, although a bit chaotic, didn't attract the attention of the larger horde outside.

After taking a few deep breaths to calm myself, I approached the gate quietly.

The gate was ajar, and I peeked out cautiously, ensuring I wouldn't be seen by the walkers outside.

As expected, almost all the walkers in the alley had gathered in front of the gate of the previous courtyard, with only a few stray walkers wandering towards the noise.

The previous courtyard was in the middle of the alley, but this one was closer to the exit.

If I ran fast enough, I could avoid the scattered walkers and not risk engaging them.

According to my calculations from last night, if I exited the alley and turned right, I would reach the village entrance.

The courtyard where we stayed was in the first alley on the right.

The thought of soon finding out about Yangyang and Suo Tian's situation made my heart racing faster.

I shook my head, trying to calm down and avoid unnecessary speculation that might weigh me down.

Although I had managed to dispatch walkers relatively easily, it was mostly because I had help or backup.

Now, being alone, I couldn't help but feel a bit nervous.

Hiding behind the gate, I watched as two walkers stumbled towards the crowd of moaning walkers.

I gripped my dagger tightly, took a few deep breaths, and steeled myself for the challenge ahead.

I was determined to reach Suo Tian and the others without any mishaps.

After a mental pep talk, I patted my face, gritted my teeth, and sprinted out from behind the gate.

Before the walkers could notice me, I ran as fast as I could towards the alley exit.

A few walkers tried to grab me, but I dodged them easily.

If I couldn't avoid them, I kicked them down without wasting time to finish them off, and continued running.

As I approached the end of the alley, I felt an overwhelming sense of excitement and relief.

The plan was working, and I was about to see my loved ones - Yangyang, Shen Xue, Shen Feng, Rongrong, Yiyi, Xu Shu, and Suo Tian.

I couldn't help but feel a surge of joy and anticipation.

However, reality had other plans.

Just as I emerged from the alley, I was met with a scene that made my blood run cold.

The road ahead was wide and straight, leading to the village entrance.

But what I saw was a sea of walkers, stretching across the entire width of the road.

My mind went blank, and I froze in shock.

But I didn't have much time to process what I was seeing, as the walkers behind me began to moan and chase after me.

The ones at the village entrance also noticed me and started shambling towards me.

I took a step back, my mind reeling with questions.

How did so many walkers gather here?

Were there more walker hordes on the way?

How many were there?

The sheer number of walkers was staggering, and I felt a sense of dread wash over me.

I realized that I was facing a truly terrifying enemy, one that seemed almost endless.

The situation had turned into a classic "tiger in front, wolf behind" scenario.

However, this time, there weren't many walkers behind me on the main road, just a few stragglers who had spotted me and were shambling towards me.

I glanced at the alley to my side, where a large horde of walkers was closing in, and the even larger horde at the village entrance.

With no other option, I gritted my teeth and turned around, sprinting in the opposite direction.

I didn't have time to take out the few walkers in my way, so I dodged and weaved around them.

The roads in the village were similar to those in the county town, with larger roads connecting to smaller ones and vice versa.

I zigzagged through the alleys, desperately avoiding the small groups of walkers.

It seemed like the village had been overrun with walkers overnight, and I estimated that there were at least hundreds of them.

At first, I was able to run smoothly, dodging the slower-moving walkers with ease.

However, my stamina was limited, and I hadn't eaten or drunk anything since the previous night.

I was already exhausted, gasping for breath and struggling to keep going.

The sheer number of walkers was overwhelming, and after circling around, I was exhausted and had to find shelter.

I chose a house in an alley with fewer walkers and slipped inside.

After barricading the door, I quickly cleared the courtyard to ensure it was safe.

Panting heavily, I collapsed onto the floor, leaning against the wall.

My heart was racing, and I pressed my hand against my chest, trying to calm myself down.

My throat was parched and sore from breathing heavily, and my mind kept flashing back to the scene at the village entrance.

After taking several deep breaths and calming down for a while, my heart rate slowed, and my breathing steadied.

I opened my eyes slightly, gazing out at the empty courtyard.

A bitter taste filled my nostrils, and my eyes stung with unshed tears.

Although I had only caught a glimpse of the village entrance, I had noticed that the cars were gone.

Walkers couldn't drive, and it was unlikely that someone would steal them in such a remote area.

Which meant... Suo Tian and the others had left.

They had driven away, leaving me behind.
