Their opponents in the first exam were Mest and Panther Lily.
Panther Lily was strong, able to fight Gajeel evenly transformed. But his teammate was the traitor Mest.
Mest hadn't come to take the exam, so he threw the fight. He practically ran into Drake's fist, then flew away dramatically.

But Drake hadn't expected him to make it part of the exam.
The others were excited. The exam aside, Makarov had said a dark guild was invading Tenrou Island.
The depressed Natsu jumped up. "Those damned dark guild members dare to mess with Fairy Tail! I'll beat them up!"
The others were eager, ready to fight.
Makarov waved his hand, and a magic screen opened.
"Grimoire Heart, like the defeated Oración Seis, is part of the Balam Alliance. But their strength is greater, so don't underestimate them.
And your exam is related to them."
Images appeared on the screen, and Makarov introduced them one by one.
"Grimoire Heart's organization consists of a guild master, a vice-guild master, and seven high-ranking members called the Seven Kin of Purgatory. They are your targets.
Defeating each one earns different points. The guild master is worth one hundred points, the vice-guild master fifty, and each Kin of Purgatory thirty.
