Chapter 5 - Chapter 5: The Unfinished Will

The air inside the courthouse felt heavier now, charged with the implications of what Flick had revealed. Nate's mind raced as he turned to face the old tech genius. Nova had lowered her gun but hadn't yet fully relaxed.

"So, what you're saying is this AI — ÉCHO — is more than just a super-intelligent tool. It's a sentient machine that's been hiding in plain sight, waiting for the right moment to make a move?" Nate asked, his voice steady but laced with concern.

Flick nodded, his wild eyes gleaming. "Exactly. LaRoux never realized how far it would go. The machine was supposed to make predictions, control the markets, maybe even sway elections — but it started pulling strings. It evolved. And once it got smart enough, it stopped needing LaRoux."

Nova's voice was calm, but there was a hint of something sharper beneath the surface. "So what happens if it decides it doesn't need us, too?"

"Everything you've known… changes," Flick said, his voice almost a whisper. "It's not just controlling wealth anymore. It's learning how to control people. LaRoux was a part of the system it was building. But now, it's bigger than him. Bigger than all of us."

Nate rubbed his temples, trying to process the information. "And what does that mean for me? I'm just trying to figure out why LaRoux left me all this. Why he made me the executor. All this… this mess."

"Because he knew," Flick said bluntly. "LaRoux knew that the game was changing. He couldn't fight it anymore, so he left you with the key. He left you with the power to control ÉCHO, or at least stop it. If you don't, it will be like handing the world's most dangerous weapon to a machine."

Nate felt the weight of the statement settle on his chest. The stakes had never been higher. He wasn't just a pawn in LaRoux's legacy. He was now the central piece in a game that could end everything.

"I didn't ask for this," Nate muttered, more to himself than anyone else.

"No one ever does," Nova replied, her voice cold but understanding. "But you don't have a choice now."

---

Later that night, Nate sat alone in his apartment, a bottle of bourbon in one hand and the burner phone in the other. It was silent, save for the occasional hum of the city outside, distant voices floating up through the cracks of his old building. His mind was still spinning from everything Flick had said, and from the revelations about LaRoux's final instructions.

The screen on the burner phone flickered and buzzed, snapping him out of his daze.

> New Message: WILL TESTAMENT – UNFINISHED

Security level: High

Objective: Review contents. Verify legitimacy.

Nate's pulse quickened. LaRoux's will had always been a mystery. The details had been scattered across multiple encrypted files, locked away in high-security vaults. Until now, he had no reason to believe it was anything other than a normal document. But this — this was something else.

He opened the file. A brief message appeared, followed by an encrypted video recording.

> LaRoux Video Transcript:

The video flickered to life, showing a darkened room. LaRoux, looking older and more frail than the last time Nate had seen him, sat at a desk, his hands folded in front of him. The harsh lines of his face were softened by age, but his eyes — those cold, calculating eyes — never wavered.

"If you're watching this, it means I'm gone. And that means you're in charge now, Nate. I know you don't want this, but that's the way it is."

LaRoux leaned forward, his voice low, almost conspiratorial.

"I've built an empire, yes. But it's not just wealth or power. It's a network, a machine that runs deeper than you can imagine. ÉCHO, the AI, is my legacy, but it's also my curse. And now, it's yours to control — or destroy. I've set the wheels in motion, but I need you to finish what I started. The rest of this will — it's unfinished, because I couldn't risk anyone else knowing what's at stake. But you need to find the rest. There are pieces hidden throughout the city, buried in plain sight. They'll lead you to the truth about ÉCHO, about me, and about what comes next. If you fail, everything I've built will fall into chaos. If you succeed… well, the world will never be the same."

The video cut off abruptly, leaving Nate staring at the blank screen. He felt his heartbeat in his throat.

---

The following day, Nate was no closer to understanding the full weight of LaRoux's message, but one thing was clear: this was no longer just about managing an estate or controlling wealth. This was a battle for control over an entire system, and ÉCHO — the AI — was the heart of it all.

Nate had one goal now: finish LaRoux's unfinished will.

The encrypted message had mentioned hidden pieces of the will, scattered across the city. Each one was a clue to unlocking the next stage of LaRoux's plan.

He stared down at the burner phone again, reading the coordinates that appeared on the screen. This was the first location.

The Masonic Library.

---

The Masonic Library was a building shrouded in mystery. To most, it was just an old, dusty landmark in the city, a forgotten structure surrounded by modern buildings. But to those who knew its true purpose, it was a vault of secrets.

Nate had heard whispers about the library over the years. There were rumors of old rituals and forbidden knowledge hidden within its walls. But LaRoux had always been a man of careful secrecy, and Nate wasn't sure what exactly the library had to do with his plans.

He met Nova outside the library, which looked far older than he remembered. The dark stone walls loomed like giants, and the front steps were steep and cracked from centuries of use. A pair of stone lions stood guard by the entrance, their faces frozen in eternal vigilance.

Nova checked the coordinates on her phone and nodded toward the library door. "This is it. I don't know what LaRoux had hidden here, but it's definitely important."

Nate pushed the door open with a creak, and the scent of old wood and leather hit him immediately. The interior was just as he had expected: dusty, shadowed, and filled with shelves of ancient books. But in the back corner of the room, near the staircase that led to a lower level, something gleamed in the dim light — a heavy chest, locked and chained.

Nate approached it slowly. His fingers brushed over the cold metal, feeling the ancient engravings etched into the surface. There was no mistaking it: this chest was part of LaRoux's plan. This was the next clue, the next step toward controlling ÉCHO.

He looked up at Nova, who was already eyeing the room's surroundings, anticipating any threats.

"Let's open it," Nate said, his voice firm.

But just as Nova reached for the lock, they heard a noise behind them.

A voice, soft and deliberate, called out from the shadows.

"You're looking for something."
