Chapter 707 - Chapter 554

The corridor stretches before them like the throat of some iron beast. Jannali's eyes stay fixed on the glittering trail, her fingers brushing against Gosan's shaft as she walks. The tracks lead onward, past rusted conduits and weeping pipes, past the skeletal remains of machinery that hasn't moved in centuries.

Atlas sniffs the air, then coughs violently, waving a hand in front of his face. His blue eyes narrow as he glares at Bō-Zak. "Do you really have to smoke that thing right now?"

Bō-Zak sucks on his pipe, a lazy grin spreading across his features as smoke trails behind him like a banner. "Of course I do. It's relaxing."

Atlas's fists ball at his sides. "This is NOT a time to be relaxing!"

Bō-Zak's shoulders jostle with quiet laughter. He holds the pipe out toward Atlas, the ember glowing. "You seem really tense. Maybe you should give it a try."

Atlas opens his mouth to deliver what promises to be a spectacular retort—

Jannali stops dead. "Quiet!"

The group freezes. She stands at a fork in the passage, her head tilted, her third eye hidden beneath the scarf but seeming to listen in ways her other eyes cannot.

Kaburo steps up beside her, his hand resting on Kalamaru's hilt. "What is it?"

Jannali points to the glittering trail veering left, then to a separate set of footprints heading right. "Bloody hell. It looks like they got separated." Her jaw tightens. "Jelly went that way with some others. Charlie went alone."

Kaburo rubs his chin, his jaw catching the dim emergency glow. "Should we separate too? Take both tracks?"

Before Jannali can answer, the sound reaches them—a rhythmic clanking, growing louder with each passing second. The unmistakable march of heavy metal footsteps.

Kaburo's grip tightens on his blade.

Jannali's eyes flick to the sound, then back to the fork. "Looks like we're fresh out of options, mate."

Atlas rushes up as the corridor ahead fills with cyborgs—a wall of rusted metal and grinding gears, their red eyes blazing in the gloom. He cracks his knuckles, Electro dancing across his fur. "Looks like we'll have to fight our way through."

Everyone pivots at Bō-Zak's voice. "Hey." He points a thumb over his shoulder. "Looks like they have friends."

More cyborgs fill the corridor behind them, their footsteps echoing in unison. Bō-Zak empties his pipe with a practiced tap, sliding it into his pocket. "If I didn't know any better, I'd think this was a trap."

Atlas rubs his palm down his face. "Really?"

Bō-Zak chuckles at his own joke.

Then the cyborgs lunge.

---

Jannali moves first.

Gosan extends in a blur of motion, the segmented alloy locking into place. But this time, the tip changes—the metal warping, reshaping, the spearhead expanding into the massive, bony skull of a Hatzegopteryx. The ancient predator's jaws snap open, revealing rows of teeth that gleam with hunger.

The first cyborg charges. The Hatzegopteryx head chomps down, its jaws closing around the creature's torso with a sickening crunch of metal and bone. Jannali wrenches the spear sideways, and the cyborg falls in pieces.

She doesn't pause. The spear whips in a wide arc, the dinosaur head snapping left and right, each bite claiming another victim. "Come on then, you rusted bastards!" Her drawl cuts through the chaos. "I've got more where that came from!"

Atlas is a storm of red fur and blue lightning. He meets the cyborgs head-on, his maces swinging in brutal arcs. Each impact sends electricity coursing through metal frames, seizing joints, shorting circuits. A cyborg lunges at him; he ducks, drives Stormclaw up through its chin, and the creature's head detonates in a shower of sparks.

"Too slow!" He spins, Thunderfang catching another across the chest. "You're all too slow!"

Bō-Zak flows through the fray like smoke given form. His sickles dance, finding gaps in armor, severing cables, slicing through hydraulic lines. He doesn't stay still long enough for any of them to land a hit. "You know," he muses, ducking under a swinging blade, "this is almost therapeutic. Nothing like a good fight to clear the mind."

Kaburo doesn't speak. He doesn't need to.

Kalamaru sings through the air, the ōdachi tracing patterns that seem to exist in a different dimension from the one they inhabit. Each stroke finds the junction where metal meets flesh. Each cut is surgical in its brutality. A cyborg falls. Then another. And another.

"The craftsmanship is adequate," he mutters, severing a creature's arm at the shoulder. "But there's no artistry here. No soul. Just mass-produced violence."

The cyborgs keep coming.

Jannali plants Gosan's shaft against the floor and vaults over a charging cyborg, the Hatzegopteryx head snapping down to claim the creature's spine. "They just keep coming!" She lands in a crouch, already spinning to face the next wave.

Atlas smashes two cyborgs together, their frames crumpling like paper. "This is definitely a trap. They're pushing us somewhere."

Bō-Zak appears beside him, his sickles dripping with hydraulic fluid. "Yeah, but that somewhere might be better than here." He gestures at the narrow corridor. "Anywhere's better than this cramped little death box."

Kaburo cuts down another cyborg, then pauses, his eyes scanning the passage ahead. "We need a better advantage. This position is untenable."

Everyone turns at Jannali's voice. She's at the front of the group, Gosan still extended, the Hatzegopteryx head snapping at any cyborg that gets too close.

"Right then. Let's get a move on." She jerks her head toward the open corridor ahead—the one without the glittering trail, without Charlie's footprints. "No matter where they're pushing us, we can still roll 'em. But we're deadset trapped in this tiny-arse spot."

She's already moving, the others falling into step behind her. The cyborgs surge after them, but Jannali's spear keeps them at bay, the dinosaur head snapping and tearing at anything that gets too close.

They move as a unit, cutting their way through the endless tide of metal and flesh.

---

Elsewhere.

Law's blade traces an arc of pure destruction. His Room expands, the blue dome enveloping the corridor, and a dozen cyborgs come apart at the seams. Limbs separate from torsos. Heads fall from shoulders. The pieces clatter to the floor in a heap of sparking metal.

Penguin darts through the chaos, his own blade finding throats and joints with practiced efficiency. "Captain, what did you mean, we have backup?"

Law separates another cyborg, his expression grim. "It's Marya."

Shachi perks up at the name, spinning without thinking—and nearly loses his head.

Law's blade is there in an instant, severing the cyborg's saw-arm from its body before it can complete its arc. "PAY ATTENTION!"

Shachi grins, utterly unrepentant. "Did you say Marya?"

Uni cuts down another cyborg, his breath coming in ragged gasps. "These things are everywhere! Why would Marya be here?"

A new wave of cyborgs surges toward them. Law's Room expands again, and the creatures collapse into their component parts, gears and pistons scattering across the floor.

The four stand panting in the middle of the carnage.

Law's hand finds his hat, pulling it lower. "I don't know. But she isn't alone. And she's just as stuck as we are." He jerks his head. "Let's keep moving. We're close to whatever it is they're protecting."

Penguin nods, falling into step. "Aye aye, Captain."

---

They walk in silence for a time, the only sounds their footsteps and the distant drip of condensation. The corridors twist and turn, each one looking exactly like the last.

Then they hear it.

A ruckus of footfalls. Impacts. Cursing.

"Bloody hell, they just keep coming!"

BOOM.

An electric flash. "Can you put that damned pipe out already!"

A familiar voice, smooth and unruffled: "You should really give it a try. You might like it. Could relieve some of that pent-up stress."

CLANG. BANG. BOOM.

Another voice, cold and measured: "Step aside or be left behind."

Law, Penguin, Shachi, and Uni exchange looks of pure confusion.

Then the corridor ahead disgorges four figures—battered, bloody, and still fighting. Atlas's maces crackle with Electro. Jannali's spear-hybrid snaps at retreating cyborgs. Bō-Zak's sickles gleam with fresh fluid. Kaburo's blade traces elegant arcs of destruction.

They stumble into the open space and stop dead.

The two groups stare at each other for a long moment.

Jannali breaks the silence. "Who the bloody hell are you supposed to be?"

Atlas grins, his chest still heaving. "The Heart Pirates!" He reaches out at the same time Penguin, Shachi, and Uni do, their hands meeting in a cascade of high-fives. "Long time no see!"

Penguin's voice carries genuine warmth. "Same to you, Atlas. After that disappearing act on Zou—"

Atlas's grin widens. "Had to do it. The sea was calling, and I finally found my ride."

Bō-Zak interrupts, his eyes flicking between the newcomers with obvious interest. "Looks like a reunion."

Everyone's heads snap around at the sound of footfalls echoing through the corridor. More cyborgs. Always more.

Jannali's jaw flexes. "Right. Better get a move on."

Everyone turns when Law speaks. "This way."

Atlas, Jannali, Bō-Zak, and Kaburo pause. For a moment, they hesitate—the reflexive resistance of people who don't take orders from strangers.

Atlas looks at Penguin, Shachi, and Uni. "This must be that captain you were waiting on."

Law's patience fractures. "Enough chit-chat. Let's go!"

Penguin, Shachi, and Uni are already moving, falling into step behind their captain without question.

Atlas, Jannali, Bō-Zak, and Kaburo exchange glances.

Bō-Zak shrugs. "It's more than what we got right now."

Jannali rolls her eye. "Bloody hell."

She moves. The others follow.

The eight of them plunge deeper into the island's guts, cyborgs pursuing them every step of the way. But now they move as a larger unit—Heart Pirates and Marya's crew, united by circumstance and the desperate need to survive.

Behind them, the corridor fills with the grinding of gears and the clanking of metal feet. Ahead, darkness waits.

And somewhere deeper in the island, Athene's mad creation factory hums with hungry anticipation.
